ELOQUENT

Do you know what? I'm feeling PRODUCTIVE today. Let's have TWO reveals in one day.

I think this next one missing the top 20 is perhaps going to upset a few people....

21. Ronnie Mitchell (6.06)

OUTRAGEOUS NO?

It only occured to me after that I wasn't just joking about Bradley being just as popular as the likes of Ronnie :o

Well perhaps he wouldn't be if the rate was conducted now. I suspect this relatively low rating is more to do with the timing of the rate than anything. Were the rate to take place now, I reckon we'd be seeing a two-horse race between Ronnie and Janine. I have to admit I was amongst those who failed to mark her well, but that would certainly not be the case going forward.

Ridiculous as the Danielle plot was, Samantha Janus (and to a lesser extent Larry Lamb and Lauren Crace) won herself a LOT of converts. Up until this year, all we had seen of Ronnie was her parading around the Square like a Queen, being snotty to everyone and having a face that had been slapped by a fish. The continual association with Jack Branning certainly didn't help matters either. JACK BRANNING SUCKS THE LIFE OUT OF ALL HE TOUCHES.

Now that Janus has shown us what she can really do, let's hope things continue this way. Hopefully post-twice-dead-daughter Ronnie will take a firm step away from all things Jack Branning, but one does worry whether the writers will have the sense to put this into action...

 Even six months ago she was totally fabulous! Poor Veronica. :( It'd definitely be a Janine-Ronnie race to the finish, or at least I imagine so.

Was she really? 6 months ago she was just humourless and emotionless. At least now she's just the former.

Well once again I've let this slide haven't I? :(

Oh well, you'll get TWO EE legends for the price of one now as we hit the top 20...It's another tie!

19. Peggy Mitchell (6.12)

One that many had expected would make the top 10, but alas. Perhaps part of the problem is that for the majority of the time Peggy is now a caricature of herself; a bitter, craggy old dwarf in a blonde wig who devotes her time to banging on about how "we're Mitchells and we take no $h!t, so GO ON, GET OUTTA MY PUB!"

Personally, I much like Peggy when she's showing a different, more vulnerable side. The build-up to the Archie wedding was brilliantly done really; Archie came so close to killing the old Peggy off but could never QUITE get it finished off. I liked how it was played so that no matter how manipulated and downtrodden Peggy was becoming, we still had just that little spark of old Peggy lingering.

However, I do NOT like current Peggy. We know she's a Mitchell and she takes no $h!t, but it really is far too out of character and unbelievable that she would disown her own son for failing to become a murderer. This isn't Peggy. Peggy's tough and all, but she's also a big softie at heart and would have BALKED at the idea of darling Phil drowning someone alive in concrete, not encouraged it. What Archie tried to do to her was not really bad enough to warrant death.

Let's hope the writers sort it out when she comes back to drunk, vomiting Phil.

19. Ian Beale (6.12)

And another one I thought would be an easy top 10, despite the problem of Ian owning a penis.

Ian's one of those characters where, love him or hate him, it is impossible to deny the contribution he has made to the show. He's largely unlikeable, but he's MEANT to be. He's the show's only remaining original character, and to be honest, I see as being more synonymous with the show than even the likes of the Mitchells, Dot or Pat. He's the show's essential character.

I'm going to come out and say it, I do believe Adam Woodyatt is one of the most under-rated and overlooked cast members on the show. He does nasty little weasel well, he does comedy loser well, he does cowering little boy well, and he does upstanding family man well when he wants to. The episodes where he finally realised who his stalker (Steven) was were some of the best EE have done for the past couple of years. But you'll never see him beat the likes of Scott Maslen or Lacey Turner to the awards.

And I also LOVE the Ian/Jane partnership. I have decided they must NEVER be allowed to split.

Ian and Jane work SO well; they have such chemistry. I demand that if one ever leaves, both must. I agree he's a great character; I quite like that he's always such a killjoy, in the caf or at the unit, there's almost a sense that because he'd feel awkward participating in sillyness he tries to stop it altogether. That could be explored to a greater extent I think...

Peggy, bah. Babs, lovely as she is, is not a great actress, she has an old-school sort of approach to acting. It always seems very 'I've just read 'shocked face!' on the script, so here it is!'. She has her moments though, I like her rapport with Pat. I'm not going to moan about her condemning Phil for his lack of murderous quality because, ridiculous as it was, it had me in stitches. A total parody of herself!

I agree there's a lot to Ian that could be explored, which says a lot for the character seeing as he's already been around for over two decades.

I'd rather Ian and Jane NEVER left.

I'm also with you on Babs Windsor. A few of the older actors do have rather a hammy approach to things (Rudolph Walker as you've pointed out is another culprit; I'd also throw Laila Morse in there aswell although she has rather less opportunity to demonstrate the hammy acting than the others).

ya ian is a great charactor and his marriage to jane is his best marriage yet him and cyndi were great but they werent a couple couple cyndi was always out for herself,i hope jane and ian stay with the show for a long time to come although i cant see adam leaving now after so long on the show

I can quite imagine Ian being the Ken Barlow of the show. Assuming EE lasts until 2050 or whatever, they'll have to wheel him out in a coffin. It's the ONLY WAY.

18. Lauren Branning (6.18)

Oh Buzzjack. COME ON. SERIOUSLY?

I know Lauren ran over her father, who was a very bad man at the time, and it was all very amusing. But do we SERIOUSLY rate Lauren higher than Ian Beale? Peggy Mitchell? Phil? Ronnie? Max Branning? Brenda Boyle?

I suppose I can't complain too much in that I did give her a 9 myself, in appreciation of Madeleine Duggan's insistence on keeping her totally BLANK expression and DEAD and MONOTONE voice for every scene she features in; whether screaming at her mother, exposing family infidelity at Christmastime, snogging her boyfriend, pulling her sister's hair, running over her father, or being subsequently put on trial for attempted murder.

She's more vacant than a toilet which has been recently scented by John Prescott's bowels. And that makes her very amazing indeed.

What an odd but effective analogy.

Her rubbishness is her key strength. With Lucy, I never really got the so-bad-she's-great-in-an-ironic-way because I always get the feeling we're actually supposed to see her as the new Janine/Cindy. Lauren however...LAUGHABLY dreadful, it's terrific.

I also LOVE that they've paired her up with Peter Beale, who is her exact male equivalent. You can just imagine them staying on the show for years and years speaking monotone to each other. It will be lovely.

17. Mo Harris (6.24)

Jark's one true love fails to make the top 10. He will be most displeased.

Mo Harris is another one of the hammy older crew that currently linger in the background of Albert Square. But then the hamminess probably doesn't matter so much in Mo's case given she's solely there for the odd bit of comic relief or squawking in the street. I don't recall a SERIOUS storyline involving Mo at all in the 10 years she's been on the show, not excepting that odd little 1940s spinoff with her and Pat they did years ago. Maybe it's time she had one. It'd be interesting to see if Laila Morse could rise to the occasion.

And maybe it's time we also got to meet FAT ELVIS, who quite clearly sounds like the greatest character ever to be invented.
