It's best not to remember, because it makes the top 2 all the more of a SURPRISE.

You'll find out tomorrow evening anyway.

Stacey is pretty much iconic now. Probably the best Slater TO DATE. Talking of which Laila Morse (Big Mo) was on Celebrity Come Dine With Me tonight and she was one hundred perfect amazing. Her laugh is like a wild hyena and it goes on for minutes on end. She had my in tears. And she turned up at Bobby Davro's meal wearing a white shirt with a string skirt for a belt and nothing else?!

Yep Stacey is definitely part of the furniture now.

I think Lacey certainly vies with Jessie for best Slater actress to date, although I couldn't really call it yet.

I loved Come Dine With Me tonight. And I found Bobby Davro and Dane Bowers oddly likable aswell. Bobby and Laila made quite an amusing double act! I think EE need to employ her 10 minute laugh/evil cackle more.

"Dinner at Bobby Davro's, a Hawaiian Elvis, and Big Mo. It doesn't get better does it?"

Lacey is a much better actress than Jessie but Kat was a truly loveable character and Stacey isn't always supposed to be loveable. She's a less a rogue and more a cow than Kat.

I genuinely can't think of the top two! This is going to bug me right down until the reveal, which probably won't be until Christmas (a fitting time of year when it comes to EE revelations)!

Ronnie didn't even finish top ten!

Jane being in the top two is pretty shocking as well. I guess it was more feasible a year back but still... I'm going to put my mind to use and try to figure out who the other contender is.

Surely not! That would be... so bizarre. It would say an awful lot about the inconsistency of some characters/the show's writers if Jane and Shirley were our favourite two not a year ago.

Tis Shirley! Just typed in "Shirley" in the search box and there is deffo not a Shirley post!

Shirley ftw plz.

Stacey has been overused to death imo.

Jane & Shirley wouldnt have been my prefered choices but Jane ftw i guess.

To be honest I don't see that Jane and Shirley's characters have declined in the past year, they've just been underused. Jane hasn't had anything really meaty since the Stephen fiasco, and Shirley has faded away a bit since the Phil romance fizzled out. It doesn't stop them being great characters, just means the writers have some work to do!

I'm glad in a way though, it shows that we've judged on the CHARACTERS as opposed to simply mimicked who the writer's flavour of the months are.

Stacey has been overused to death imo.

I do wonder if overuse is the reason why the likes of Stacey, Tanya and Ronnie didn't do aswell as expected.

Right, well just to prove I CAN see a countdown through, here's the final TWO.

Both the top two were fairly comfortably ahead of the rest of the pack, with almost a 0.5 gap between #2 and Stacey.

2. Jane Beale (8.18)

The lovely Jane.

She has admittedly been a bit quiet recently, with the Steven saga providing her most recent hard-hitter. But then that's ALWAYS been Jane's way. She's very rarely at the forefront; in fact in her five years I can only think of two occasions where she was truly front-and-centre - Stevengate and Grantgate. In the meantime the likes of Stacey, Tanya, Ronnie and Roxy all waltz in late but have still grabbed headline after headline.

I personally think that's worked in her favour though. She's been able to very slowly grow on the viewers as being rather a pleasant person, without the hindrance of developing persoanlity disorders, burying husbands alive, trying to snare people into making babies with her, or lying about paternity tests.

It's testimony to Laurie Brett's warmth that in 2009 Jane is one of the most popular characters on the show, when in 2004 she was a glorified extra who had all the makings of someone who would be booted off within a few months with little more than a whimper.

Of all who have joined the show in this decade, I really believe Jane seems the most likely to go on to become the next EE long-runner, joining the ranks of Ian, Dot, Pat, Peggy, Phil, Ricky et all.

1. Shirley Carter (8.41)

Well I don't think many people saw this coming.

I have to admit at the beginning I did have the idea that Shirley could be a dark horse, but genuinely never thought she'd trump the likes of Stacey and Tanya and win this thing. To be frank, it's largely down to Norma's scores, whereby Shirley got 9 and everyone else got 0 (except poor Dot and her -1). But even without that, she still would been #2 by a relatively comfortable margin.

I do like Shirley. I love that appearances can be deceiving. She looks like a horrific old bruiser who would be as likely to gut you as she would look at you (poor Linda Henry), and I guess the association with the scary one off Bad Girls didn't help. But in reality, although she can have a sharp tongue, she's turned out to actually be quite a vulnerable sympathetic character. Not easy to pull off. One of the most heartbreaking moments of recent years was watching Shirley getting all excited ad hyped because her son was coming home, only for bloody Deano to turn around, mug her and declare his undying hatred of her! She was obviously an awful mum, but the comedown was still horrible to watch.

The other key strength of course is the partnership with Big 'Ev. Shirley/Heather have proved one of the more effective double-acts in EE history. Despite looking like an odd combo, they just work. They're both damaged, insecure, desperate, and fully aware of their faults, and it's been the basis of a beautiful friendship. Long may it continue! Shirley will make a wonderful father to 'Ev's child.

So in all, whilst many may disagree, Shirl's quite the worthy winner I think.

Or alternatively I've been talking a whole load of guff, and people were giving her high marks on the misconception that they were actually championing the legendary Shirley Benson, she of the "my-noisy-neighbour-killed-my-cat" fame!

YES!

best minor character of the decade

rivalled by snake lover Sasha :w00t:

^Sasha was amazing! I though i was the only one who remember her! Im not alone!!

A decent winner imo. Im pretty sad this countdown has finished now tbh. All rate results should go as slowly as this one.

Shirley Benson was NO minor character! She got to shag the Ferreira dad AND son let's not forget! Actually didn't Sasha aswell, I forget...

And indeed Aled, all countdowns should take a minimum of 10 months to complete! Jark and James are already following from my example with their Top TV shows countdown...
