BJ is probably not ready for the spin-offs :o

I think people don't like to be forced into having to send something of a particular genre/style/theme

a 'male only contest' probably wouldn't work as clearly Buzzjack has a dominant female preference and a lot of posters might actually hate to have to listen to 28-odd songs all by male artists :o

I'm sure we could come up with more imaginiative themes than that, but if the themes become too obscure they become more limiting...

I always thought a 'cheap entries' contest would be interesting where we were all allowed to send huge hits, but at the end of the day, what would that achieve? nobody would be discovering anything new, we would merely be ranking if Umbrella is better than ...Baby One More Time, which probably wouldn't be that interesting at all

so unless we can think of some great and really interesting themes, it might be a good idea to forget about spin-offs

Tbh, why are people knocking it before it's even happened? These normal contests I hate hearing more than 10 seconds of some of songs, but then you find something really good, so it's alright.

same for if you have a 'male-only contest' you may not like it ALL, but I'm sure there's a few songs you'll like. I agree possibly doing a different spin-off would be better.

However, you can't really knock it until it's been tried, change is good, if it fails then that'll be the last of it, if people enjoy it then it can become a bit more regular :)

personally, I agree with you and I'd be quite happy to see a spin off happen, but people seem so overwhelmingly against it that I wonder how many people would actually participate

Just do it, and if people are THAT upset\annoyed it's not a proper one then they can just not compete, it's not like it has to be HUGE if it's just a spin-off.

spin-off survey started, please everyone air your views before we go ahead and start one...

I agree about your 'cheap' contest problem you stated.

Personally I think 'British artists' theme will be the most successful out of the ones we made up :o But this contest almost wouldn't be different from any other ones. I can't think of other themes apart 'male' (which i'd love to occur btw) or specific country theme :o

I am afraid that people can actually stop participating at all in the end because of this. This would take away interest to the contest step by step. I feel that i'm losing it as well. That's why i want a spin-off btw. To do something new. Actually i now think it's people's choice whether they want to partaking in BJSC after all or not. The Contest has to change.

My next entry to BJSC14

Röyksopp: Happy Up Here

I have put my eye on this song long ago and so wanted to hear it... GREAT song, defo a grower

I agree, if you do something that the majority doesn't want to do, all that will happen is that people are driven away

so maybe the best idea is to have spin-offs as optional side contests that run in the weeks in between the regular contests...if as many people are against the idea as they say they are, there probably wouldn't be as many songs to listen to, maybe between 25 and 30

The absense of semifinals should make the contest sway quickly :w00t:

hmm...looks as if Trashlexis might end up hosting (and participating in) the spin-off himself at this rate  I can't believe so many people are against it! I don't care either way to be honest, I'd be happy to participate in a spin-off or normal contest next month, but I do think that we should forget about the idea seeing as it seems so unpopular

either that or run a spin-off alongside a normal contest, but people might not want to listen to that many new songs all at the same time, so maybe we just have to accept that spin-offs are not wanted on here

clearly not everything that works on NSC will work here

What? It's hardly massively unpopular - only about 4/5 people have vocally come out against it  By the same token, the opposition of about 9 people would've made La Roux my worst entry ever :P

Bloc Party - Signs

Bloc Party - Biko

Do you think BJ could love it? :o

a lot of people haven't voiced their opinion on it at all, I wish more people would because then we could guage how popular (or not) the idea actually is hence me opening the survey thing...you know I'd be more than happy to partake in a spin-off but the last thing that we want is to drive people away from the competition...everyone should have a say in how/when/if the spin-offs take place, becuase if it turns out to be something that people are adamant that they don't want then there is no point introducing it

but as Casey said, change is good in my eyes and I'd absolutely love something like an ESC only spin-off

I'm so entering Ireland 2007 :kink:

You see, if we have a spin-off it is obvious that the majority of members would participate - I probably would myself. Because there is nothing else happening so the alternative is a month of nothing. But that would be the gauge people would use to determine its success, never mind the songs being samey or the winner being obvious or people clearly being more pre-occupied with the forthcoming real contest during it.

If 40 people took part it would be considered a success even if realistically it wasn't at all, which is why I think the idea should be nipped in the bud and not started, unless it were to run in a sub-forum or something and run alongside the real thing. I'm all for expansion of the contest and making it more varied, but I just don't think we should be doing it at the expense of the real thing.

I don't see why we should 'nip this idea in the bud' (worded as if it would be a massive trouble having the contest ) when thus far it's a minority of people who've expressed a distaste at having the idea - I don't see why winners would be obvious or songs necessarily samey anyway! :/ If it's a #10s contest, that would HARDLY be samey at all! And seeing as 10 contests a year is IMHO the optimal amount (with people voicing the occasional complaint that we're beginning to get an overload anyway), I see one spin-off a year along with the Best of as being a decent dilution to aim for. And how would we judge these to be a success then? :P People are already stating these would be the worst things to happen when we haven't even tried them yet for goodness sakes!
