What's the best selling Christmas record of all time?

 

Had this question in the village Christmas Quiz tonight. The correct answer given was 'White Christmas'.

 

My thought was that 'Do they know it's Christmas' sold more.

 

What am I missing? :unsure:

 

Surely if include the remake of Do They Know Its Christmas then its the best seller :unsure:

I expect the worldwide sales of White Christmas is higher. Band Aid is a UK thing isn't it?

If I had been asked that in a quiz ... I would always go for White Christmas. I'm sure its still correct.

White Christmas is the worldwide best selling Christmas song - in fact until Elton John's Candle... in 1997 it was THE worldwide best selling record, Christmas or otherwise with sales of 30 million (EJ's record sold - or rather shipped - 37 million copies).

 

In the UK the best selling Christmas reord is Band Aid, actual sales in the UK of White Christmas are unknown although they are thought to be over one million, perhaps as much as 1.5 million - Band Aid's 1984 original is on 3.6 million.

Looks like the question was meant as worldwide and I was thinking only of UK sales.

Do you mean sales in the UK or Worldwide?

 

In The UK it's Do They Know Its Christmas but worldwide it's White Christmas

 

There have actually been 4 versions of Do They Know Its Christmas

 

The original in 1984 by Band Aid - then 1989 by Band Aid II then 2004 by Band Aid 20

The other version which was a 2003 hit all over mainland Europe was by TV Allstars

In all their recorded versions, the 2 biggest Selling Christmas Sellers, (Globally),

are easily 'White Christmas' & 'Silent Night'. Both Songs have far outsold every version

of 'Do They Know It's Christmas' combined.
