Anyone watch it tonight?

As a HUUUUGE Royle Family fan I was really disappointed  Although with a great show like Royle Family I guess you can't help it but have high expectations for it but all the same it just seemed a bit OTT, before it reflected real life and you know you've done half the things they have but tonight  who the hell baths with a Turkey. Seemed a bit too silly in parts which was a huge downfall :( Although, the someone at the door at night scene was hilarious  also the end when Jim ran into the toilet.

I thought it was great, highlight of the whole day TV-wise, well from what we watched anyway  Much better than I expected it was going to be ^_^

Do you want a slap? Usually they actually are like my family LOL but thankfully we're not rough  my mums just like Barbara though ^_^

After the very disappointing Xmas Dr Who; & the previous night's underwhelming & unfunny in large portions Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special this was 10 out of 10 comedy gold.

Due yet again to the combination of fantastic writing from Cash & Aherne and wonderful comedic/dramatic actingabilities of the ensemble cast. But the genius casting of the two leads from the seminal 1960s British film Billy Liar as Dave's parents made this special the best thing on TV over the Chrimbo period.

Sir Tom Courtenay's acting as David Snr was deserving of a Bafta nomination IMHO.

I also liked the fact that Cash & Aherne are playing with a winning formula which would doubtless alienate some fans of the show; but after Nana dying in the last special that is the right thing to do to give the show a rebirth.

Tom Courtney and Helen Fraser were absolutely fabulous in this! I loved it.

i was disappointed. after a good start in the royles house it started to get silly at denis's/davids. the turkey storyline got stupid, and the 'mingling' was equally dull. there was too much deja vous about it and as time went on the laughs dried right up. the final sequence where we saw jims awful arse was nothing short of barrel scraping.

it was too long, there wasnt enough original jokes, there were too few characters involved and it got to be tiresome.

knock it on the head .,.... NOW.

I thought it was really funny but in comparison to the last xmas epsiode it comes nowhere near. Nana made this show for me tbh

Yeah. I miss the nana :( She was the $h!t <3 Queen Of Sheeba ep is still one of the funniest/saddest things I've ever seen on TV.

This was good but I would have liked to have seen more of the old cast back like Anthony, Cheryl and Joe etc.

'Christmas isn't really a day for kids is it?' LOLZ

I loved it when Denise (Aherne) was crying in the kitchen to Dave, you couldnt really tell what she was saying. I found it really funny. I was laughing non-stop.

Well, ok, this episode wasn’t the best ever but nonetheless, it was still funny. It’s had a pretty bad slating all in all which I personally think is harsh; there were some very good moments in it. Come on, come and recline!!

It made me chuckle in parts. The highlight for me was definitely the David Snr character. I wasn't comfortable watching them sitting in somebody else's house though. I thought it was brave of them to take the risk and change the formula but I don't think the risk paid off. On the whole, it seemed sillier and less reflective of real life than it's been in the past. There were a few little gems in there though.

I also felt the little sketch at the end with Jim and Barbara in bed was unnecessary and silly. The camera panning in on the picture of Nana just before it would have been a much more appropriate ending, I thought.

I thought it was brilliant! I have always found the show to be overated and not funny in the slightest in the past but this was fabulous. Just the whole Dave/Denise dinner scene. I mean putting the turkey in the bath and then washing in it? Oh and the cuppa soup ha.

We also laughed everytime Dave SNR said 'Bar-bair-a' :heehee:

I was a bit disappointed too.

The whole reclining thing went on for a far too long and while the turkey thing was funny at first, even the silliest person would know that after it's defrosted it still needs to be cooked.

It just wasn't believable and that was always what made it the funniest.

You'd see there thinking "God, that's just like us that"...

And Tom Courtenay just annoyed me if I'm honest.

I guess it's each to their own as some of you found the way he said Barbara's name funny...

I just wanted to hit him.

:o we must've been watching different shows I think... Gavin and Stacey was pure comedy brilliance... the Royles was like witnessing the lingering end of a beloved pet..... compare this episode with some of the moving, beautifully observed and downright genius episodes of the past (especially Queen of Sheba and the Christmas episode where Denise goes into labour)..... I thought it was awful...sad to say as it's my favourite ever sitcom...but this was a dud.... and I hated Dave's Dad!

I 100% agree, its a total let down when you think how excellently written and performed the recent series were. It's also my favourite sitcom too but for me it was just an absolute let down.

im not the biggest royle family fan but i loved the x mas episode and really enjoyed it although i did prefer gavin and stacey which i love anyway

I agree the Xmas Royle Family was disappointing but I thought Gavin and Stacey was just average - that is the first time I've watched it and I don't think I'll bother again. Can't see what all the fuss was about.

Rab C Nesbitt has so far been the funniest thing on TV over the Christmas period.

You might have missed the part where Denise blamed Dave for buying a turkey too big to fit in the oven then....

No, I caught that bit.

The point I was making was that they were still defrosting it and putting it in the airing cupboard when people were arriving...

No matter how big or small the turkey was, it still needed to be cooked and, to me, it wasn't believable that they didn't know that.

I think the whole turkey thing was to prove, conclusively that both Denise and Dave were a match made in heaven ... they are both idiots (as if there ever was any doubt). God help their children! I thought the way Tom Courtney played Dave's dad was brilliant though ... you always wondered what sort of idiot parent(s) he had to be so dim. Now we know!
