What artists do you think started out cool and edgy, and then sold out and either gave into cheesy pop or their material was just a watered down version of their earlier stuff.

Some that spring to mind were....

Elton John. I liked his early stuff like Your Song, Rocket Man, Saturday nights alright for fighting, The b**ch is back....but I think he sold out with Don't go breaking my heart and it was downhill from there.

Rod Stewart. Again I liked his early stuff like In a broken Dream, Maggie May,You wear it well.....but from Sailing onwards oh no.

What artists/bands were good but sold out in your opinion?

Stating the obvious.

oh so many, prolifically in the punk era many jumped on the punk bandwagon only to get straight off it when the lure of big bucks was offered.

think the biggest hypocrit was sir bob geldof ..... one minute boasting 'i dont wanna be like you', 'looking after number one'... then twittering on about not liking mondays which is a totally unremarkable pop song that could have been sung by anyone... of course he went on to feed the world, proving in stark contrast that he doesnt only 'look after number one'!!

tbh i think blondie too jumped ships to court major popularity. from her punk/new wave/60's roots she soon dropped the new wave sound in favour of the more popular/commercial disco sound.

Queen

Loved the raw power of the early stuff like Liar, Brighton Rock, Tie Your Mother Down, Death On Two Legs, Prophet Song then they lost their roots and came up with a lot of cheesy commercial stuff in the 80's that was simply not on the level of the earlier stuff

Love them but they did sell out

I would add Iron Maiden into the mix too

The Paul DiAnno/Steve Harris era and even Dennis Wilcock prior to that was again pure raw power - Phantom of the Opera, Prowler, Transylvania, Running Free etc, remain my fave Maiden tracks to this day but over the years particularly the Bruce Dickinson era they became more commercial and lost touch with their roots I felt, still bloody good but almost every single one of my Iron Maiden songs is from the DiAnno days

Craig David

how has he sold out?... isnt he now what he has always been?

heres one for dispute.... john lennon! from a working class hero to 'woman' :puke2:

i saw a bit of that show (the itv one that was broadcast last night)..and even tho some of the parts of like pinball wizard went on and on with muso playing - actually looked like a good show

nope.... got a link?

Green Day! Completly changed their image and music like constantly wearing those stupid black suits and eye liner just because they've attracted a large teenage girl fan base.¬_¬
