im so happy with the result so fa r for a while i thought i may have been alone in prefering the old mariah

Mariah didn't debut until 1990.

Anyway, I think her last two are my favourite albums. But 'Fantasy', 'Dreamlover', 'Vision Of Love', 'Emotions' and 'Hero' are some of my favourite Mariah songs. But I'd also say 'Heartbreaker', 'Migrate', 'We Belong Together', 'Get Your Number' and 'It's Like That' are some of my favourites.

It's almost like old Mariah and new Mariah are two different artists to me. I went for the new one though because those are the albums I've listened to more though I probably like more singles from 1990-1998 than 1999-2008 but that's because the Charmbracelet and Glitter eras were a bit rubbish.

Mariah was best with her ballads. I feel like she sold her soul to regain her popularity and it's just not the same.
Without a doubt, her best period was doing ballads. The new stuff is very dull in comparison and doesnt make best use of her amazing voice.
I am an old school Mariah fan. Early material is preferred here.

Im delighte dto see im not the only one by any means who prefers the old material,i would love mariah to do an album of ballads again
Like someone said, it's like comparing two different artists when you look through the catalogue. I'm into more of the fresh sound. I dug her Emancipation era most. She completely reinvented herself and it proved to be just as successful. She was becoming a bit bland, and it was time for a change. I love Mariah in general, though. Vision of Love was a perfect debut single for the time, but it's quite dated now and songs like that wouldn't give her major success in her native of USA.

I guess part of the reason is because she doesn't really have that amazing voice any more. I know they can work wonders in the studio but there must be some limits?

I'm not sure why you speak as if she hasn't recorded a ballad since the mid nineties. What about "We Belong Together", "Bye Bye", "I Stay In Love", "Thanx 4 Nothin", "Through The Rain" etc. A whole album of ballads would be pretty dull and would fail to sell these days.

As AAC said, she completely reinvented herself, mostly because she had to. She still does ballads but I'll just as happily listen to something like "Migrate" or "Get Your Number" from her latest eras. I'm happy that Mariah "sold out" because she'd have been shelved and retired from music if she carried on the way she was before 'The Emancipation' came along. (though she's been more R&B since or before "Honey")

Exactly. She still does ballads - just not those mellodramatic clichéd pop ballads backed by a choir. Now, she has produced some of the best pop ballds of all time and Music Box is one of the best albums ever made, but her early 90's image would not work now. She does plenty of ballads, but now they're just contemporary.

I do get her appeal before she went into R&B as I've always loved her, but it's called being savvy. She knew she was almost yesterday's news (which she was becoming before Emancipation).

I prefer the 80's and 90's.
