Ronnie James Dio (Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Dio)

Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)

Joey Belladonna (ex Anthrax)

Chuck Billy (Testament)

Serj Tankian (System Of A Down)

Tom Araya (Slayer)

There my faves

I always prefered Ozzy as a vocalist of Sabbath. :heehee:

Serj Tankian is another awesome vocalist, but I didn't list him as I'm not a fan of his bands music tbh. Don't rate Tom Araya much either tbh.

so do i, but Dio is technically the better singer.

I like Tom cos he has a menacing sound to his voice and those high pitched screams (like at the start of Angel Of Death) are rather cool.

Tim Armstrong circa Op Ivy, Robert Plant, Joey Ramone, Lennon/McCartney.

And i'll throw it out there, Thom Yorke.

The Gathering are wannabe WTs.

Totally wrong in that assessment Kath, sorry, considering that The Gathering were around for YEARS before WT were (two albums in the early 90s, whereas WT don't get going until mid-late 90s), not the mention the fact that The Gathering and Within Temptation are about as similar musically as Nightwish and Radiohead are. I could easily argue that Sharon is a Kate Bush wannabe... The Gathering are/were way more experimental and progressive... If anything, when they got Anneke in, The Gathering are/were (cos they split) more like a cross between Anathema and Radiohead, with a bit of Pink Floyd thrown in, whereas before when they had male vocals, they were more like My Dying Bride or early Paradise Lost.... You cant just lump them into the same category just because they both happen to have impressive female vocalists.... The Gathering were NEVER Gothic/Symphonic in the slightest, and well, you just have to look at the images of Sharon and Anneke as well, Sharon is very Prettygoth, Kate Bush-alike, whereas Anneke was always more Hippie/Crusty/Punk with her short red hair or dreads as she had as well, I've never seen her wear the pretty, flowing dresses either.... Anneke has a more individualistic style about her with her image IMO, so I really dont know how the two singers can be compared to other than the fact that they are both damn good vocalists....

Anyway, to chuck in my two cents worth.... Good ones already mentioned - Mikael Ackerfeldt, Tom Araya (for the sheer brutal howls...), Serj Tankian, Robert Plant, Anneke and Shazza  , Dio (but, for me he was a bit inappropriate for Sabbath....), Ozzy (before he went sh!t), Bruce Dickinson, etc....

A few others to chuck in the hat - Daron Malakian (proved he's every bit as good as his mate Serj with last year's Scars on Broadway record...); Chino (Deftones) - bit of an acquired taste, but the guy has something about him; Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle) - absolutely excellent vocalist; Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy); Anete (the 'new' Nightwish girl) - took me ages to appreciate the fact that she IS actually quite good; Tarja (obviously); Liv Kristine (Leaves' Eyes and solo stuff) - can do the Gothic Rock well, and the more Poppy stuff equally as good too; Shirley Manson (ex-Garbage) - a GREAT female Rock vocalist, she's wasting her time in Terminator TV show though, although she's good, but it's not really her thing. Still I guess she had to do something after fukkin' Warners did the dirty on her solo project..... <_< Amy Lee - surprised no one's mentioned her tbh; Dani Filth - a very surprising choice I know, but he has gotten a lot better over the years; Joey Belladonna (Anthrax, not sure if that's "ex" at the moment.... ); Ann Wilson (Heart) - the absolutely archetypal 80s "rock chick", but of course Heart started in the early 70s..... It really is impossible to gauge fully how influential the Wilson sisters are to many of the "ladies in Rock/Metal who followed - certainly they were an influence on the likes of Amy and Sharon..... Oh, and, Kate Bush, cant forget her.....

Ronnie James Dio for me, loved him since Elf

^ I knew we could rely on Craig to supply us with some "old skool" rockers.......

LOL

That's my musical era really mate, from say Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac going up to about the end of NWOBHM is where my musical love lies, maybe 5-10% of my collection at best is 1990 and beyond

Joey Belladonna (Anthrax, not sure if that's "ex" at the moment.... )

Yeah it is, he left again about a year or more ago, pretty sure they've got another singer. It's pissed me off, i'd really like to have seen Anthrax live with the Among The Living line-up.

I DID see them with that line-up..... :P

I think that the 'thrax should really just close the door on Joey now, he's just been messing them around as far as I can see....

:o Hmmm, I must have been on another planet when doing that bitchy post. In addition, as young as I am, haven't even heard The Gathering untill the last

album or so.. I'm not sure if Amy Lee has THE vocals of this genre, she sounds extremely samey on certain albums and between certain songs.. Her range sure is wide but when it comes to the high notes its as if she just manages to pull them off and everything else she just nails. Where Sharon can go as high as she want for as long as she wants and has quite some bit vocal flexibility, matching her voice perfectly for almost any song. And being as young as I am, I started taking a listen to Kate Bush and along with all your compliments she definitely does stand out head over heels above the rest. I do now see a resemblence between how Sharon could be a Kate Bush wannabe, even the covering of 'Running Up That Hill'. For me, an extremely underrated FFM singer, Monika from the Sirenia who left the band 2 years ago.. She just has something to her voice that's so haunting and great.. 'The Other Side' is just such an epic song from such an underrated band.

Thanks for that, GRIMLY :P

Lemmy - Hawkwind and Motorhead

have you heard him recently, you can really tell how his voice has died (proberly through drink).

Johnny Whitney from the Blood Brothers is easily the best for me. His voice is like a child being tortured or something but it's amazing.

Though Fucking's Greatest Hits is their best song. Ftwz.

I kinda thought it was unlike you to sort of do that tbh.... I dont believe really that Amy Lee has THE vocals of that particular genre either, as you say, she copes well enough and IS a good singer, but doesn't really go to the same heights as Sharon, Kate, Tarja, Viebeke Steine (Tristania) or even the new Nightwish girl (Anete)... I just mentioned her cos no one else did, and I would say she's in the"Good Rock Vocalist" category anyway.... Oh, and I forgot to mention Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil) in my last post.....

As for The Gathering.. If I were you, I'd check out the following albums of theirs (the ones with Anneke) - Mandylion, Night Time Birds, If Then Else, How to Measure a Planet and Souvenirs..... I presume you've listened to Home.....

Cristina Scabbia is pretty average I'd say. Her voice does suit the style of Lacuna Coil but it really isn't at all that great.. It's almost as if she puts no effort into her singing, on purpose. But I love love the overall sound of the band but I think Cristina on her own wouldn't blow me away at all but they sure do know how to do hammer their live performances. I completely agree with you on Anete though, I can't believe the negative reception she got. She is not THE best Nightwish vocalist but she certainly has proved herself on the last album especially on the epic 'Bye Bye Beautiful'.. She is a solid vocalist where Cristina is a solid performer and looker, lol.. Will give TG a more decent listen.

Don't diss Cristina :D

What? I complimented her

So, it just seemed like "damning with faint praise" then.....?

I kind of get what you mean, but she's not really trying to be that sort of dominant, very "out there" sort of vocalist, she's more trying to act with the male vocalist, Andrea Ferro, than to attempt to completely overpower him and the band as a whole.... Ferro's a bit limited in his style (he's no Keith Caputo or Maynard really), so I think Cristina's more adjusting to that rather than not making the effort... And, frankly, I've seen Evanescence live and I've seen Lacuna Coil live, and I sure know who sounds better.....

Lacuna Coil have always been more about a band dynamic rather than the "fantastic girl singer with a bunch of generic blokes in the background" sort of band....
