Er, but a lot of the original shows were like that as well mate.... The whole "hide behind the sofa" factor was surely a pretty major part of the show's appeal.....

... the fear though was space monsters in the original episodes (60's), the recent incarnation on earth has played on childhood fears... that isnt a criticism, but im not sure how many more 'fears' there is to exploit.

I can understand why some people want more episodes based somewhere other than Earth. But don't forget that for most of the Pertwee era the Doctor was confined to Earth and in "the present day".

the original dr who seriese were largely based in space, either on crafts or planets, the pertwee era finished earthbound simply to save money! budgets were cut. imho the best episodes were invariably set in other worlds. early dr who exploited the 60's fascination with space/the future effectively, i wish it could be re-captured, theres so much more to feed the imagination.

Whatever (Grimly). Personally I think to make your mind up before even watching makes zero sense, but each to their own.

Wrong... You can make value judgments based upon an actor's previous work which usually turn out to be a fairly good indicator.... Michelle Ryan has done two Sci Fi shows before, she was outgunned spectacularly in one (Jekyll) by far better performances from other actresses, and in the second (Bionic Woman), ditto, by Katee Sackhoff as the first Bionic Woman 'failed experiment', and the fact that her lack of charisma was a causal effect in the show being cancelled..... So, I'm making my mind up based on that, she will not be good in Dr Who, and the fact that an unknown actor is playing the doctor as well, er, let's put this into a formula shall we.....

Unknown, inexperienced actor + Actress with lack of charisma = Show Getting Cancelled

Not saying that Matt Smith is necessarily a bad idea, but it needs someone with more strength and Sci Fi nous to be opposite him.....

Oh come on mate... The "space monsters" are clearly based very much around human psychological fears and historical horrors from our own past... The "daleks" and "cybermen", are based on insane, authoritarian, totalitarian ideologies, in much the same way as the "bodysnatchers" were.... The "Pyramids from Mars" story was based around Egyptology and the theory that aliens built the pyramids, with Sutek and Ra being put forward as alien entities, which the film/tv series "Stargate" came along and totally ripped off.....

So, a lot of these things have very "earthbound" origins...

You're LAUGHABLE! You're assuming Matt Smith will have a negative effect on the show's rating because he's unknown... I'm not going to argue though. You quite clearly WANT to have something to moan about. It's what you thrive on, so...

Well, he's hardly distinguished himself in the things he's been in has he....? I didn't even remember him being in the Philip Pullman thing, yeah, what an impact he made in the role I must say..... David Tenant I knew from Casanova, so, he was always gonna be an interesting choice, and Chris Eccleston is simply one of the best actors this country has produced in the past 15 years or so with a huge wealth of experience of Film and TV parts, from Our Friends in the North to Shallow Grave to Cracker to Jude.....

Anyway, I seem to remember you being a strong advocate for Paterson Joseph, you've changed your fukkin' tune..... Now HE is a very good actor who does make an impact in everything he does, from Survivors to Green Wing to Peep Show, very much a misssed opportunity for doing something genuinely radical with the role in having a very, very capable and experienced black actor playing the part. Matt Smith just does not have the ability or experience of Mr Joseph or Mr Tenant.... Or indeed Bobby Carlyle.... I mean, Jesus Christ, you have TWO very capable, talented and PROVEN actors more than capable of nailing this part to the wall in Joseph and Carlyle and you go with the kid with no real lead role experience to play what is the most high profile role on UK television..... What a JOKE..... Michalle Ryan being cast would turn a joke into a fukkin' FARCE...... I could be wrong, but I dont think I am.... Christ we really are going back to the hell days of Sylvester McCoy and Bonnie fukkin' Langford here.....UGH!!!!!!!!!!! :puke2: :puke2: All I can say is, the writing is gonna have to be nothing short of astounding (which Moffat is capable of, I admit...) to make up for the fact that there could be two huge question marks playing the lead roles....

Your total bumming of Michelle Ryan in the face of the facts that she's just not that good makes you the laughable one in my book..... :P

Exactly. You COULD be wrong, you've just said it yourself. All I'm saying is don't rule out that possibility.

And I was a 'strong advocate' for Joseph, but what's that got to do with anything?! He's not been cast and that's that.

ALSO I'm not 'bumming' Michelle in face of any facts because there are none, only opinions. I thought she was great in Bionic Woman, as did many. I thought she was great in Merlin, as did many.

How many people had heard of Tom Baker before he took the role? He went on to become one of the best Doctors of the original version.

I'd still love to see Bill Nighy as the Doctor but I suspect that will never happen. :(

OK, I remember the media picked up on at the time which suggested that Michelle Ryan was not an inspired casting choice:

As for Grimly being worried about Doctor Who.... Well I totally agree with him, like anything that you have come to love it is only natural to become concerned when the smoke signals coming out are not encouraging that the BBC are downgrading their priority of Doctor Who as a flagship high quality programme ........ with recent allegations made that Chiwetel Ejiofor was offered the role but as he only was only willing to do one series (a la Christopher Eccleston) they passed on him. But more crucially the outstanding Colin Salmon as good as confirmed (without saying anything, his hands & facial expression said it all (apparently)) on Sky Sports Soccer AM that he did audition unsuccessfully for the role of the Doctor.

Whilst media allegations have been made that Matt Smith has been hired on 40% per annum of the salary that David Tennant got for the same part.

Add to the mix an actress of questionable ability (but hey she is well fit "init" as she has made the FHM Top 5 most fanciable females so who cares) who is being touted as the favourite for the role, despite a rather more well known successful actress with a vastly superior CV (award winning in the UK; Golden Globe, Tony Award nominated in the USA) whom this week in the latest US Esquire magazine revealed that she has gone after "a high profile dream TV role in the UK that if successful starts filming in June" which has been interpreted by some bloggers as cryptically confirming auditioning for the Dr Who assistant role.

So if the Doctor Who producers were to apply the same logic for the Doctor Who's assistant role as they seemingly have to the casting of this unknown inexperience Doctor. Then maybe we will see this nightmare scenario headline in April (nicked from a Digitalspy poster called Webslark:)

'Sources close to Doctor Who today revealed that one of the companions in the forthcoming specials is none other than 80s companion Bonnie Langford. In a nod to older fans, Russell Davies reportedly said ' We felt the time was right to make another link to past history. Bringing back such a well loved companion as Bonnie will I am sure be welcomed by all fans, especially as she has agreed to stay on as Matt Smith's companion for Series 5'

Please tell me that's not true. Bonnie Langford was worse than awful. How was she ever "well loved"? If another old companion is going to come back, make it Jo Grant.

It a joke worst case scenario post.

At least we're getting rid of Catherine Tate - the second worst assistant ever after Bonnie Langford.

The should bring back Freema or Billie full time or take on Carey Mulligan (Sally Sparrow in Blink).
