My favourites...

1 The Human League - Don't You Want Me (they thought it was filler, the record company thought it was a smash... it was!)

2 Bucks Fizz - The Land Of Make Believe

5 Abba - One Of Us (ABBA songs are so well written, beautiful, just a shame that this was their last big UK hit)

7 Dollar - Mirror Mirror (Mon Amour) (OK, so neither could really sing, but Trevor Horn!)

8 Kool & The Gang - Get Down On It (get your back up off the wall!)

9 Jon & Vangelis - I'll Find My Way Home (gorgeously atmospheric)

11 Altered Images - I Could Be Happy (despite the awful rhyme structure)

13 Rod Stewart - Young Turks (his most synth-tastic track)

18 Diana Ross - Why Do Fools Fall In Love? (I was in love with her when I was two...)

27 The Four Tops - Don't Walk Away (not really the equal of their Motown recordings, but good and contemporary)

31 Earth Wind & Fire - Let's Groove (Not EWFs best (that's September), but they were always pretty great)

33 Kraftwerk - The Model / Computer Love (Kraftwerk  True pioneers.)

35 Queen & David Bowie - Under Pressure (the funkiness of the bass intro still gets me too this day)

40 The Pretenders - I Go To Sleep (written by Ray Davies, another legend...)

1 The Human League - Don't You Want Me    one of the best pop tunes ever!

36 John & Yoko & The Plastic Ono Band With The Harlem Community Choir - Happy Christmas (War Is Over) - One of the better xmas tracks.

Not at all, I've argued that point time and again.

well i wouldnt argue against it being a good pop song, but i wouldnt call it one of the best simply because it isnt iconic enough... unlike say... 'stand and deliver' or 'keep on running' tracks that nearly everyone knows. surely if a pop song was 'good' it would be widely known, and 'land of make believe' is IMHO second to 'making your mind up', the bucks fizz track that is best known.

Why does something have to be well known or iconic to be good? Personally I hate Stand And Deliver. I can name 10 songs that never charted anywhere that were better.

January 1982, a good time for me and a very snowy and cold month too (as December 1981 had also been) - the lowest ever temperatures recorded in the UK were recorded in the early hours of the 10th January 1982 - 27 years ago tonight. It fell to -27.2c in Braemar, the coldest ever recorded in the UK and at noon had risen to only -19c, the coldest ever daytime temperature recorded! In England it also fell to well below freezing all over the country with -26.1c recorded in Shropshire on the same date (the record for England). As the temperatures rose, the snow then fell and I remember a week of severe weather in mid January that affected all the buses around here. Not quite as bad as January to March 1979 when we had lying snow and severe weather for most of the 3 months but a lot worse than our little cold snap of the past month! I used to attend all Newcastle's home matches back in 1981/1982, we didn't play a single match, home or away, after December 5 until January 4 then the next one was over a fortnight later before things got back to normal.

Anyway, enough of the weather, I owned the following records...

1 The Human League - Don't You Want Me (12")

2 Bucks Fizz - The Land Of Make Believe

6 Madness - It Must Be Love (12")

7 Dollar - Mirror Mirror (Mon Amour)

11 Altered Images - I Could Be Happy

14 Foreigner - Waiting For A Girl Like You

22 Imagination - Flashback

31 Earth Wind & Fire - Let's Groove (12")

33 Kraftwerk - The Model / Computer Love

40 The Pretenders - I Go To Sleep

An excellent chart...

The number one album was Dare by Human League.

we are talking about pop music, not inivotive or influencial. surely a good popular song has to be a big hit by definition?..

2 Bucks Fizz - The Land Of Make Believe

3 Adam & The Ants - Ant Rap

5 Abba - One Of Us

6 Madness - It Must Be Love

37 Olivia Newton-John - Physical

40 The Pretenders - I Go To Sleep

What a great chart!

As for.....

Bucks Fizz - The Land Of Make Believe

How many pop songs do you know that were written about the Prog Rock movement taking numerous prog rock albums & tracks lyrical references/concepts & using the cutting & pasting technique reassembling them into a different order, whilst the lyrical metaphor "Something nasty in your garden waiting patiently so it can have your heart" is a reference to the punk movement & how it took over from Progressive Rock. Lyricist Peter Sinfield (ex lyricist for King Crimson & Emerson Lake & Palmer - his other best known lyric was I Believe In Father Christmas) confirmed this on BBC4's very recent Prog Rock programme.

Little wonder this song won the Ivor Novello award for best song musically & lyrically in 1982. (He repeated the trick a decade later for Celine Dion's best (only?) good song "Think Twice").

I never knew that about that song. That just makes me love it even more now. Thanks for the info!

....... then maybe it was too clever for its own good. i remember the nme slating it at the time, but maybe them, like me, wasnt familiar with prog rock lyrics as for me personally prog rock was zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz . i have never said it wasnt a good pop song, it was, but it hasnt stood the test of time with many people either not knowing it or forgetting it.... unlike 'making your mind up' , 'stand and deliver', etc ..... i like bucks fizz.

RIP.

The made great no nonsense pop tracks. In short they were the Supergrass of their day.

In tribute I put on The Legend of Zanadu on my local pub's jukebox last night & it sounded ruddy great.

nice one.... i agree it does sound great, and is another pop song that id rate higher then bucks fizz's 'land of make believe'...

Making Your Mind Up is only well-remembered because of Eurovision though - it's a pretty horrible song really.

Making Your Mind Up is only well-remembered because of Eurovision though - it's a pretty horrible song really.

i think its a damn good pop song.... pure nonsense set to a catchy rhythm... a pleasant 3 minute no-brainer. and dont forget, if it wasnt for the success of 'making your mind up' there would be no 'land of make believe' (or 'new begining (mamba seyra)', my fav bf track)

If You Can't Stand The Heat is my favourite... so funky!
