Both groups from Hull were fronted by singer/songwriter Paul Heaton who had a highly lyrical post The Smiths songwriting style and an ear for a strong melody.

 One of my favourite bands ever. They've just reunited actually, well without Paul Heaton and a few of the guitarists.

Four Other Key Songs:

Housemartins - Happy Hour (1986 UK#3)

Beautiful South - A Little Time (1990 UK#1)

Beautiful South - Don't Marry Her (1996 UK#8)

Beautiful South - Perfect 10 (1998 UK#2)

Are any of you fans of Paul Heaton's former bands output?

Preferred Beats International as a Housemartins spin off group, loved Dub Be Good To Me and Won't Talk About It etc but Beautiful South were ok

A Little Time and Keep It All In were my fave Beautiful South songs

The Beautiful South!

All I think about with these is being little and having my parents playing their albums all the time. Being honest, I found them incredibly annoying at best.

I liked the Housemartins, nothing fancy just down to earth catchy songs. Beautiful South made some of the best songs in the early '90's, Song for Whoever and A little Time are my 2 favourites. I have their album Choke & greatest hits.

......... and thats how i saw them... 'parents' pop music.

ok the songs were well written, they were pleasant songs, they didnt really cut any new ground and were not inovative... but they had their place i guess as not all music has to be 'cool'.

:cheer: The Housemartins did some tunes. Happy Hour was cool. Me and the Farmer was nice and quirky pop. And Build. I only really know there singles though.

Song for whoever is a lovely pop ballad. Same with a Little time. I didnt really like many of the others though. You keep it all in was nice. I preferred the first female singer she had a nice folky voice I think she was called Brianna or something.
