I think it's pretty sad that some pop acts have to complain so much about today's music state. I can't believe there's pop music lovers listening to the likes of Girls Aloud, Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake (amongst many others) and not finding them entertaining... their records are pop and are aimed to entertain, and in my opinion they deliver incredibly well when it comes to pop entertainment.

Pop music is anything but boring, it never was and it never will be. Yes, artists may not be as epic and mythical as they used to be 20/30 years ago, but as far as great pop records go, I think there's plenty of them in contemporary music.

I take his point that most of today's pop stars are "boring", but there were boring stars from years back..............Cliff, anyone! :D

The thing about most(not all) of todays instant stars, are that they don't or can't write any of their songs. They just get professional songwriters in to churn out the hits time after time. The art of songwriting by the artist seems to be diminishing as is composing the music. It's far easier to get someone else to write the songs and then splice it together with bits of old songs for the music, then you can churn out an album every year, to stay in the public eye. If you don't you get forgotton, as people move on to the next reality thingy.

I have much more respect for artists who write their own stuff and the music, even if it takes a few years to do it. But then they rarely get on the pages of the daily papers or the mags. Simon Cowell has a lot to answer for.

But why does the fact that they don't write their lyrics or compose their music make their records boring? That's what it's hard for me to understand.

Morrissey has spoken of his distress at the current state of the music industry, describing it as "boring".

The former Smiths frontman was speaking to Ian Camfield for Xfm when he criticised the lack of individualism in today's stars.

Morrissey said: "I think everyone is quite boring in music. I can't see any voices who are taking the plunge and risking anything.

"They're padding down the plank and everyone's just lining up and accepting awards. It's very, very difficult for me and very distressing. I can't see anyone who's very individualistic."

The 'Suedehead' singer recently said that it would be worth being dead "just to get away from Victoria Beckham".

do you agree with him? and who is to blame? corporate business? the public?

He's right! These days all popstars are interested in is being famous and covering/sampling classics.

Sounds like Morrissey being Morrissey to me... more interesting artists have emerged in the last couple of years than they have for ages. There's a lot of crap about, but a lot of good stuff about too. TBH Morrissey is kind of boring himself these days... how about making an electropop album, or finally coming out?

coming out of what?

he's not gay

I'm sorry Luciano, but I disagree... I find today's Pop music (bar a few quirky, kind of eccentric types like Lady Ga Ga, P!nk, Alison Goldfrapp, Amy Winehouse and Keith Flint from The Prodigy) to be mind-numbingly, stultifyingly fukkin' TEDIOUS...... I mean, come on, seriously mate, where the hell is the inspiration in the likes of GA, Leona Lewis, Pussycat Dolls or The Saturdays..... Or, heck, bloody COLDPLAY ffs.....? BOOOOOOORRRRRRRRINNNNNNGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!

You're kind of confusing an image for actually having something to say and having some actual, real tunes which are potentially life-changing, life-affirming or worth being obsessed about.....

well yes they are entertaining, but what are they giving to music? morrisey was refering to innovation, opinion, shock (to stimulate something new), to cut new ground so new ideas and new sounds can be forged. you cant live by 'safe' entertaining pop alone.

if you write your own composition, playing instruments to demonstrate the presonal emotion you are trying to convay, it has soul, you can animate an emotion far better if its a personal experience rather then a second hand manufactured pop song. this gives the music far more meaning, depth and empathy.

this puts the cat amongst the pigeons!

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger has claimed that it is currently a great time for British music.

The singer noted the success of home-grown acts at the Grammy Awards last week, where a number of British acts picked up major awards.

Jagger said: "What is so refreshing is the different styles that have been recognised - Coldplay, Duffy, Adele and Radiohead make up an eclectic bunch, proving there's a lot of fresh British talent out there.

"I like that these acts have paid their dues in the way we had to.

"There is certainly an upsurge of diverse Brit acts breaking through in the US and overseas - good to see it. Long may it continue."

well that seems to be at odds with what morrisey is saying! who is right?

Well, no, not really.... I think Morrissey is very specifically talking about POP music, whereas Mick is talking far more generally... Radiohead are not a "pop" group, Coldplay are watered down Stadium AOR, Duffy is clearly apeing all the 60s chanteuses like Dusty, Sandie, Marianne Faithfull, etc, so no surprises he likes her then innit...? I bet the dirty old bugger would like to play a bit of "history reapeating" with Duffy and a mars bar......

Morrisey will be pleased about this then, 50 year old Paul Weller's won the best male Brit award this year.

oh God... Paul Weller's living testament that some pop stars, to preserve their legacy, really do need to die young. Him winning Best Male? Who were the other nominees? Timmy Mallett, Gareth G-g-g-gates, Leon wassisname and Roland Rat?

Whilst age is absolutely no barrier to making great music... in Weller's dreary case - it most definitely seems to be.

I am in two minds on this issue. Pop music in 2008 was quite boring, but with acts like Lady Gaga, La Roux, and Little Boots gaining popularity, I think it's a nice time for pop music. And even then, Britney's album Blackout was an amazing, balls out pop album. Robyn, of course. Pink, Golfrapp, Girls Aloud...And then there's a lot of stuff that doesn't hit the top 10, though I doubt Morrissey has heard of.

LOL @ someone saying he's not gay.

I think I now understand what he was talking about, but the problem with pop acts now-a-days is that they're no mystery to us... we know what they do on a daily basis and in some cases cameras even follow them to the bathroom so it's quite hard for these acts to make an impact and shock through their music cause everything is overwhelmed by their public image.

I was thinking about contemporary pop songs that I enjoy but I do understand that most of them won't be remembered in the future cause they don't have the longevity of an amazing pop masterpiece.

Nevertheless, I don't think Morrissey should complain or show sadness about this situation, what he should do (in my opinion) is release an amazing album with epic songs and try to change the state of music himself.

If I'm not mistaken, he's still relevant to music and releasing records, but in my opinion the likes of "Irish Blood English Heart", "You Have Killed Me" or "The Youngest Was The Most Loved", while very good, aren't even close to what he can deliver at best, not on par with his earlier stuff.

O_o Seriouslyyy Morrissey ftw. just go into the uk chart forum and see how madly inlove some of the people are with $h!t like TAYLOR SWIFT. What on earth do they see in her? :/ She has the most annoying voice, every song of hers sound almost exactly the same, her albums are anything but class or original etc. She's sooo dullly boring, now her song Love Story is the predicted next uk number one this year - the vilest flattest most crap song ive heard in ages! ;o It's so dated and unoriginal, if it was released in 97 or something you really wouldnt even notice a difference. . Thank the pope that a mod deleted the Taylor Swift forum request, people have the nerve to request it. I mean I know how everyone thinks im a chav and retarded for liking N-dubz n all, but as much as I love them i wont request an N-dubz forum. The whole popularity amongst such in.credible $h!t (ie Taylor Swift, The Saturdays) is enough to make anyone whose matured in music taste to go completely mad. . Just look at the current UK top 40 - saturdays, pussycat dolls, shontelle etc. One gets the idea that its a bunch of mini-skirt plastics and transexuals buying this music? It might sound good but is it really music? It's like all about whose charting and whose not, and its 'uncool' to like artists who have flopped on the commercial scene but these are the artists that just happen to be a thousand times more talented as a true musician and not just someone dressing in pink and miming their live performances. With these artists becoming more and more overrated, overhyped and having the immense success they're having - there really is a lot to worry about for those indie alternative artists who have the talent and want to make it big/ continue to make it big. . Basically the music industry in general . .

I actually find Morrisey quite boring. How many times has he made a dig at popular culture and pop stars of the new millenium? Everyone hates Victoria Beckham and the ilk, tell us something new Mozzo!

I've heard how awkward Morrisey can be when he's on tour etc BUT... that's OK because it's.... wait for it... Morrisey!

I fully acknowledge his place in culture and some of his songs are lyrical genius but I find the whole Morrisey defence squad very tedious and boring!
