U2 to play intimate Radio 1 set

U2 have announced they will be playing a special live set for Radio 1 on Friday 27 February.

The band, whose new album is out in March, are due to perform a three-track Live Lounge session.

Jo Whiley will host the band in her first week back on Radio 1 after maternity leave.

She said: "It's always a bit nerve-racking going back after having a baby. But having U2 playing in the Live Lounge is especially thrilling."

Fans of the Irish rockers will also get the chance to witness the special performance.

Details of how to apply for tickets will be announced during Jo Whiley's show on 23 February.

The group's 12th studio album, No Line On The Horizon, is set for its UK release on 2 March.

The LP was recorded with producers Brian Eno, Danny Lanois and Steve Lillywhite after sessions with producer Rick Rubin were abandoned.

Baby girl

Jo Whiley gave birth to a daughter, called Coco Lux, in October.

She is the 43-year-old's fourth child with husband, Virgin executive Steve Morton.

The couple already have a daughter called India, 16, and two sons, Jude, 10, and Cass, seven.

Jo Whiley presents Radio 1's mid-morning show between 10am and 12.45pm.

The presenter announced she was pregnant on her show last May.

U2 are coming to the BBC

U2 will be special guests at BBC Radio on Friday 27 February when listeners can enjoy access to one of the world's greatest rock bands - including a special Live Lounge session on BBC Radio 1.

The band will be performing three tracks for a Radio 1 Live Lounge session in Jo Whiley's daytime show from 10am.

Later that day on BBC Radio 2, Chris Evans will play host to U2 on his drivetime show at 5pm, interviewing all four members of U2 about the secrets of their success, from their formation in Dublin in 1976, to nine number one albums in the UK and 22 Grammy Awards.

A number of lucky Radio 1 listeners will be able to watch the band live at the BBC Radio Theatre - find out how to by listening to Jo's show from Monday 23 February.

U2's Live Lounge session coincides with Jo Whiley's first week back at Radio 1 after five months maternity leave. Jo says: "Time has flown and I'm very excited about getting back to my show and being reunited with my radio family - it's always a bit nerve-racking going back after having a baby but having U2, one of the world's biggest bands, playing in the Live Lounge and debuting new songs from their very fine latest album is especially thrilling."

Chris Evans says: "When it comes to rock n roll it doesn't get any bigger than U2, and when the biggest are getting better, backed up by the sheer brilliance of their new album, it will only be a pure joy to have them as part of our little radio show for one night only."

BBC in U2 publicity row

The BBC has been accused of giving rock band U2 far too much free publicity ahead of the release of its new album.

TV and radio performances, an advert using the slogan U2=BBC and website links are among the specials linked to the release of No Line On The Horizon.

Tory MP Nigel Evans said it was a misuse of licence-fee payers money. But the BBC said editorial guidelines had been conformed to.

BBC accused of giving U2 too much publicity

The BBC has been accused of giving the Irish rock band U2 excessive levels of publicity ahead of the release of their new album.

U2's 'No Line On The Horizon' is the most eagerly awaited album of the year, but the BBC has been criticised for giving the band too much publicity.

The BBC is broadcasting a string of shows about the Irish rockers across its radio and TV stations just days before the UK release of the group's new album.

They even have a section of the BBC's website dedicated to the sale of tickets and an advert using the slogan U2="BBC".

According to Contactmusic.com, British politician Nigel Evans has called the coverage "the sort of publicity money can't buy", adding: "Why should (UK) licence fee-payers shoulder the cost of U2's publicity?"

But the BBC reportedly maintains the shows fall within broadcasting regulations about promotional appearances.

Contactmusic quotes a BBC spokesperson as saying, "We take extreme care in making fair decision about how we make popular artists accessible to our audiences, especially when the timing is around the release of a new album, book, film.

"U2 are one of the world's most popular bands who have a diverse fanbase and we are reflecting this in our content.

"This includes a 'Live Lounge' session on Jo Whiley's BBC Radio 1 show and an interview on Chris Evans's BBC Radio 2 show, both on Friday."

The Dublin four-piece will also perform on Jonathan Ross's BBC1 chat show, and there will be a special of BBC2's 'The Culture Show' tonight dedicated to their music.

It's a big U2 day tommorrow.

U2 - Beautiful Day (Live at the Beeb)

U2 - Magnificient (Live at the Beeb)

Cheers Rich. That was great

It's so ridiculous that Magnificent wasnt the first single. Although saying that 'Boots' sounded ALOT better on Jonathan Ross last night. Definatly the best live performance so far imo.

BBC Licence fee....

I've to pay an RTE licence fee, but they let anyone in the world watch all shows on their site :smoke:
