This Welsh born maverick first found fame via the Liverpudlian band Teardrop Explodes before heading to an interesting yet erratic solo career in 1983.

Were any of you fans of this maverick artist who made some very entertaining records for nearly two decades?

LOVED teardrop explodes, saw them twice and both times they gave a sterling performance.

their first track was 'when i dream', a 'miss' but perhaps their best. ill find it on youtube when ive time.

Julian Cope is an absolute genius. Got to see him live when he toured a solo retro show in 2007 (?)

Brilliant front man and I never tire of his songs.

My fav song by him is Kolly Kibber's Birthday from the World Shut Your Mouth album

some other out and out brill tracks from the man

Sunspots

Out of My Mind on Dope and Speed

Sunshine Playroom

Beautiful Love

I liked Julian Cope too, got Teardrop Explodes album...Kilimanjaro. Reward and Treason are 2 of my all time favourites from the early 1980's

He was a bit pretentious but has produced some fine music. I had the album Kilmanjaro, which I bought after hearing When I Dream. I then bought the next single Reward and also the brilliant Passionate Friend which should have been a massive hit. Solo music wise I don't really know much of his music, mainly just those that made the top 40.

Bill Drummond wrote a strange song called Julian Cope Is Dead which appeared on Drummond's "The Man" album:

Julian Cope is dead,

I shot him in the head.

If he moves some more,

I'll kill him for sure.

Now, Julian Cope is dead.

The Teardrops weren't they great?

In their own wee way.

'Treason', 'Reward', 'The Thief Of Bagdad',

The Teardrops weren't they great?

A footnotes all they'd have got,

In the annals of rock.

Until I got wise,

And hatched up my plan,

A footnotes all they'd have got.

Jules C. just follow me,

I have your interests at heart.

Now take this knife,

And write to your wife.

Tell her it had to be.

Now Julian said no,

He didn't want to go.

More records he wanted to make.

But if ?pitch? is your man,

You'll go with a bang,

Bigger than the Beatles for sure.

Now, Julian Cope is dead,

I shot him in the head,

He didn't understand,

The glory of the plan,

Now, Julian Cope is dead.

We'll have platinum records not gold,

To hang on our walls at home.

When the neighbours come round,

I'll always break down,

Repeating the stories of old.

But who is this man,

With holes in his hands,

A halo round his head.

That Arab smock,

And golden locks,

It can't be, it could be, it is!

J.C. please, you've got to see,

I was doing what a manager ought.

The records weren't selling,

And Balfie was drooping,

And Gary had a mortgage to pay.
