Posted June 17, 200619 yr http://www.mad-eyes.net/disco/tb/images/albumfront_tb.jpg The third album can be crucial for an artist. A second album can still rely on the success of the debut, but with the third album, the audience starts to have high expectations. If the artist sticks with the same style, (s)he risks to lose the intrest of the public. If (s)he tries something new, there's the risk the audience just won't like it. For Madonna this crucial album was True Blue. After her debut album she scored high with Like A Virgin, but would the audience want to taste another album like that? Madonna would now show a characterictic that would be one of the most important elements of her career: the ability to re-invent herself and that way produce a more developed and mature sound, different from the previous material. True Blue would become the album with which the critics finally started taking Madonna serious as an artist. Also typical would be the choice of her producers: an old one and a new one. Steve Bray, who she had collaborated with for years, co-produced 3 tracks on the album. Patrick Leonard was the new guy in the picture who co-wrote and co-produced 5 other songs. Only Where's The Party was produced by Madonna, Bray and Leonard together. The competition between Bray and Leonard resulted in 9 great tracks, with a more mature sound than the two first albums. The album was released on June 30th, 1986. The album is 7 x Platinum in the UK with 2.1 Million Copies sold(it's in the top 20 best selling albums of all time in the UK) Spent 6 weeks at no.1 in the UK. & 7 Million in the US alone. To date the album has sold 18 Million copies (It's her best selling studio album of all time it's her second biggest selling behind "The Immaculate Collection which has sold 23 Million. The Single from the album were Live To Tell,Papa Don't Preach,True Blue,Open Your Heart and La Isla Bonita Live To Tell After the wild Boy Toy-look from the first album and Like A Virgin, Live To Tell was Madonna's first attempt to become a serious artist. This great ballad was written for the movie 'At Close Range', starring Madonna's then-husband Sean Penn. The song was also used as the lead-single for True Blue. It shot to no. 1 in the States (her third no. 1 hit), Canada and Japan and reached a cool no. 2 in the UK (the no. 1 was for George Michael's 'A Different Corner'). Papa Don't Preach This second single followed the example of predecessor Live To Tell and became a huge no. 1 hit in the US (Gold), UK, Canada and Australia. In Japan it reached no. 2. The song heated discussions about abortion. Anti-abortion organisations wanted Madonna to speak up against abortion, while women organisations and parents criticized Madonna for encouraging teenage pregnancy. Madonna said she just wanted the song to be "a celebration of life, not a national controversy". In 1986 the song received a Grammy nomination for Outstanding Pop Vocal Performance. True Blue The title track was released as third single. Many will agree this song is the least representative of Madonna's work and certainly of her image. Between all the controversies, this silly 'doo-wop' love song just seems a little odd. Nonetheless it became a no. 1 hit in the UK and Japan, while it got to no. 2 in Canada and no. 3 (Gold) in the US. Open Your Heart Originally this song was titled 'Follow Your Heart' and written for Cyndi Lauper. But Madonna used it instead, changing the lyrics and turning it into a dance song for the True Blue album. The fourth single of an album usually doesn't chart big, but this one did. It topped the charts in the US (her fifth no. 1) and in Japan, and got to no. 4 in the UK and Canada. It also topped the Hot Dance/Club Play in the US. The theme of this powerful love song, was found back in 1998's Frozen ('you hold the key'). That's why some chords of it were played right after Frozen at the Drowned World Tour. La Isla Bonita With the fifth and last single Madonna's music got a spanish-latin influence, something she would use many times again in her career (with Spanish Eyes, Veras, Evita and Lo Que Siente La Mujer, to name a few). For some reason the Americans didn't appreciate the song that much; it went only to no. 4, while it topped the British and Canadian charts. This Song is the most performed song from the album. It also appears in this years Confessions Tour.
