U2’s massive credit crunch Millennium stadium gig

Mar 8 2009 by Sarah Miloudi, Wales On Sunday

ROCKERS U2 are set to pack the Millennium Stadium with its biggest ever crowd of 85,000 in the middle of August, Wales on Sunday understands.

And it is understood credit crunch-busting tickets priced from as little as £20 will be available.

The Irish band will stage the venue’s largest concert to date when they play to adoring crowds at the Cardiff sports ground on Saturday August 22.

Tickets for the Cardiff date are expected to be released on March 14.

It will be the second time the popular four-piece has performed at the stadium, and the concert – which will be officially announced tomorrow – is expected to be one in a series of record-breaking shows unveiled on the same day.

Tomorrow, at 8am Dublin time, details of the legendary group’s Kiss the Future tour will be made public.

Along with the date in Wales, concerts for a further 95,000 fans are expected to be announced at Croke Park on July 24, 25 and 26, as well as a record-breaking gig for more than 100,000 fans at Wembley Stadium, London.

A source close to the band hinted at the grand scale of gigs planned by Bono, The Edge and co.

He said: “You’re looking at 100,000 people for U2 at Wembley.

“It will be the highest ever capacity at Wembley for a concert and is expected to be the highest ever grossing concert in the UK.”

U2 manager Paul McGuiness added: “This is going to be a very big tour, the biggest shows we’ve ever done.”

U2 first performed at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium as part of their Vertigo world tour in 2005. The band’s forthcoming show is expected to be the final in their European schedule, which is expected to kick off at Barcelona’s Nou Camp Stadium on June 30.

The band will also visit Paris, Nice, Amsterdam and Berlin.

U2 to earn €7m from Croke Park gigs

U2 are set to earn €7m and smash Ireland's concert-grossing record when they rock Croke Park in July. The band will announce the huge July 24, 25 and 27 gigs at the stadium, which will be adapted to hold 95,000 people, when they unveil their 0Kiss the Future tour tomorrow, with tickets going on sale on Saturday, March 14.

U2's Croke Park gigs, featuring set tour ticket prices expected to be between a budget-friendly €25 and €120, are expected create an Irish record concert income of around €7.5m. The total is expected to beat that of the band and other pop stars' previous concerts in Ireland.

Bono and the boys are expected to post record incomes thanks to placing the stage in the centre of the pitch and packing the field with 10,000-plus standing fans, adding to the stadium's 82,300 seated capacity.

U2 manager Paul McGuinness said: "This is going to be a very big tour, the biggest shows we've ever done." The Kiss the Future tour starts at Barcelona's Nou Camp stadium on June 30.

There is an article about this giving more detail in the Sunday World paper today. Mentions that they will be playing Hampden Park on August 18 with 65,000 tickets going on sale. How much does it usually hold?

It's so great they have come up with this idea so that more fans can see them and it enables them to have abouty 10,000 tickets at €25 which is amazing. Also another way to break more records :smoke:

Usually about 55,000 for concerts I think. Kind of makes sense. The stage position generally means the whole North Stand is 'out of bounds'. But if they are having a 360 degree stage in the middle of the pitch the North Stand will come back into play. Another 10,000 seats easy I'd have thought.
