April 3, 200916 yr Author http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/content_dis...7b2848e43c23a82 U2 Scores Q1's Top-Selling International Artist Album April 03, 2009 - Global | Retail | Rock and Pop By Andre Paine, London U2's "No Line On The Horizon" (Interscope) was the best-selling album by an international act in the U.S. for the first quarter of 2009, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan. The Irish rock group's 12th album is No. 2 overall for sales this year, behind Taylor Swift's "Fearless" (Big Machine), which was the best-selling album of the quarter with 824,000 units. U2 is currently enjoying a fourth week atop the European Top 100 Albums chart. Overall, there are 33 international artist albums on the Top 200 sellers for the quarter. That figure does not include compilations and various-artists releases that have a strong international presence, such as the "Slumdog Millionaire" soundtrack (Interscope), featuring Indian composer A R Rahman. "Slumdog" sold 235,614 in the quarter, making it the No. 22 album overall. Although it was not released until March 3, U2's set achieved sales of 744,489 in Q1, comfortably ahead of Nickelback's "Dark Horse" (Roadrunner). The Canadian rock outfit's album was third overall with sales of 575,728, making it the No. 2 biggest-selling international artist album. Nickelback also has a second album in the Top 200 sellers for Q1: "All The Right Reasons" is at No. 105 overall, moving 78,658 copies in the quarter. The other international acts with two albums in the 200 are Anglo-Australian rock band AC/DC ("Black Ice" is No. 55 with sales of 131,793; "Back To Black" is No. 110 with sales of 75,011) and Canadian singer Michael Buble, although both his Reprise sets - "Call Me Irresponsible" and "It's Time" - are near the bottom of the survey, at No. 197 and No. 178 respectively. Robert Plant has two entries, with the Grammy-winning "Raising Sand" (Rounder) duets album with Alison Krauss reaching No. 31 on sales of 197,963, making it the fifth biggest-selling international artist album, while the Led Zeppelin compilation "Mothership" (Atlantic) is at No. 133 on sales of 62,414. The third biggest-selling international artist album was Coldplay's "Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends" (Capitol), moving 259,944 copies. It was No. 19 overall, with the band's Grammy wins likely boosting sales in the quarter. Soulful U.K. singer Adele also benefited from her two Grammy wins. Her debut set "19" (Columbia) was the No. 4 international album, her sales of 229,887 out-performing Welsh singer Duffy's debut set. Although Duffy (another Grammy winner) is the bigger artist in the two singers' home market, scoring the top-selling album of 2008 according to the Official Charts Co with sales of 1.68 million, she does not quite make the top 10 international best-sellers in the U.S. this year. "Rockferry" is No. 73 overall with sales of 107,125 for Q1, making it the 13th biggest international artist album. Although Rihanna is from Barbados, the R&B singer launched her career in the U.S. with Def Jam, so is not treated as an international artist for this breakdown. Her "Good Girl Gone Bad" (Def Jam) is at No. 29 on the overall chart for Q1 with sales of 204,566. The Top 10 international artist albums for Q1 are as follows: 1 U2 "No Line On The Horizon" (Interscope) 744,489 2 Nickelback "Dark Horse" (Roadrunner) 575,728 3 Coldplay "Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends" (Capitol) 259,944 4 Adele "19" (Columbia) 229,887 5 Robert Plant & Alison Krauss "Raising Sand" (Rounder) 197,963 6 Lily Allen "It's Not Me, It's You" (Capitol) 150,409 7 Seal "Soul" (Warner Bros.) 148,500 8 AC/DC "Black Ice" (Columbia) 131,793 9 Leona Lewis "Spirit" (J) 127,399 10 Theory Of A Deadman "Scars & Souvenirs" (Roadrunner) 125,181

April 9, 200916 yr Author http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/content_dis...aacda2044eccbb0 U2, Lady Gaga Still No. 1 On European Charts April 09, 2009 - Global | Retail | Rock and Pop By Paul Sexton, London U2 and Lady Gaga continue their reigns on Billboard's pan-European charts. "No Line on the Horizon" (Mercury/Universal) starts a fifth week at the Top 100 Albums summit and "Poker Face" (Interscope/Universal) moves into a seventh week at No. 1 on the European Hot 100 Singles. "Horizon" has three No. 1 berths across the region, holding steady in Hungary and Greece and moving back 2-1 in Spain. It falls beneath the top ten, 9-17, in the United Kingdom, where "Magnificent" will be released as its second single May 4, and 1-2 in Portugal, but is up 3-2 in the Belgian region of Flanders. As "Poker Face" continues at No. 1 in the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Flanders and neighboring Wallony, and moves 2-1 in Holland, Lady Gaga's "The Fame" spends a fourth week at No. 2 on Top 100 Albums. It heads the U.K. chart for the first time, moving 3-1 on sales of 38,000 from a total to last weekend of 284,000. It's also up 2-1 in Ireland and 4-3 in Switzerland. The top new pan-European entry is Diana Krall's "Quiet Nights" (Verve/Universal), at No. 3. That improves on the No. 6 debut of the vocalist's last studio release, "From This Moment On," in 2006. The new set makes its best showing at No. 1 in Portugal, where "Moment" opened at No. 8 before climbing to No. 4. "Nights" is also in at No. 2 in Norway, No. 3 in Austria, No. 5 in France, No. 7 in Germany and No. 8 in Italy. Sony Music Entertainment releases by Kings of Leon ("Only By The Night," Hand Me Down) and Silbermond ("Nichts Passiert," Columbia) hold at Nos. 4 and 5 overall respectively. "Night" is up 2-1 in Flanders while "Passiert" stays at No. 1 in Germany and Austria but falls 1-2 in Switzerland. Sony Music Entertainment's fourth consecutive title on the Europe-wise chart, "The Annie Lennox Collection" (RCA), is steady at No. 7 after moving back 5-3 in the United Kingdom. Amy Macdonald's seemingly indestructible "This Is The Life" (Mercury/Universal) makes yet another return visit to the pan-European top ten, climbing 11-8 in its 68th chart week. That's fuelled by moves of 5-2 in Italy and 6-5 in Italy, as the debut set holds at No. 3 in Spain. Peter Fox's "Stadtaffe" (Downbeat/Warner Music) falls a place to No. 9 overall, holding at No. 2 in Germany and No. 4 in Austria. Finally, there's a new entry at No. 10 on Top 100 Albums for German hip-hop star Samy Deluxe's "Dis Wo Ich Herkomm" (Capitol/EMI), which arrives at No. 3 in Germany and No. 4 in Switzerland.

May 27, 200916 yr Author http://www.metrotimes.com/blog/musicblahg.asp?perm=771 EMINEM'S HUGE...NO, GIGANTIC DEBUT... It probably shouldn't come as a surprise that Eminem's new album, Relapse, debuts at No. 1 today on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart. What is just a tad suprising is how many copies it sold. There were those who doubted the continued relevance of one of Detroit's favorite son -- including one guy (who shall remain unnamed) who not only regularly comments drivel on this site but even followed me to WDET's Detroit Today two weeks ago when I was interviewed about my recent Em interview, posting more nonsense on their blog, which led me to being greeted by host Craig Fahle with the comment that "a listener is claiming Eminem is 'toast'; that nobody cares anymore..." But the numbers certainly don't lie. Relapse sold 608,000 copies its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan (and that doesn't even include all the illegally downloaded copies). That's the year's biggest-selling album to date, leaving U2's 484,000 albums sold in March behind in a large trail of dust. Not only that but it was a pretty heavy-duty week for album releases, with seven total making their debut (not to mention some major discs, including Green Day's new album -- this week's No. 2 CD -- released the previous week). Nevertheless, our man sold nearly as many albums as the rest of the Billboard Top 10 combined! Nice! Congratulations, Marshall. Detroit should be feeling a certain pride today...
