Posted March 11, 200916 yr Kelly Clarkson on Target for #1, The-Dream Also Debuting, Three 100k in Top 10? March 11, 2009 Just look at it this way. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. The stock market’s holding its own and there are three six-figure sales totals in next week’s Top 10 on the authoritative, HITS Top 50 Album sales chart. We haven’t seen that since 2008. In fact, we’ve only had one week this year with even two titles selling more than 100k. But enough of the bad news... RCA/RMG’s Idol alum and female empowerment role model Kelly Clarkson should unseat this week’s champs U2 with her new album, All That I Needed, and current iPod staple, “My Life Would Suck Without You,” which we interpret as her tribute to this very website. With a slew of TV appearances this week, including American Idol tonight and Saturday Night Live unh, um, Saturday night, her first album is currently looking on target to sell between 200-225k, but we reserve the right to hedge our bets based on how the tubular explosion plays out. Based on one-day sales figures from those retailers not liquidating their inventory, Def Jam’s The-Dream seems set for a nice sales week between 125-150k for his Love vs Money, as he obviously decides on the latter. He’s currently jamming the airwaves with “My Love,” a duet with Mariah Carey. Capitol soul man J. Holiday debuts with a not-bad total of 60-65k for Round 2, the follow-up to his Grammy-nominated debut, which produced the hit “Bed,”while New Found Glory makes its Epitaph bow with 25-30k for Not Without a Fight, the Florida emo rockers’ sixth album and first after splitting Geffen. Interscope’s ex-Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell parlays his collab with Timbaland into a 20-25k debut for Scream, his third solo album and first for the producer’s Mosley Music Group imprint. Finally, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ latest for Interscope, It's Blitz!, whose release date was moved up to an iTunes exclusive after massive online leaks, will garner 14-16k at that retailer alone, which is indicative of the power of digital sales at this point in time. The market was up 2% this week vs. last week, down 8% vs. same week last year and down 11% year to date. Brother, can you spare a paying trade journalism gig? _________________________________ AI should help Kelly out hopefully.
March 11, 200916 yr Author Flop.  Exaggeration much. You can't deny 200k is bad for someone of Kelly's level... She'll have longevity though but for a first week, she's done poor.

March 11, 200916 yr Author Anyway it doesn't matter, her sales will be a LOT higher after AI and SNL. I'm guessing 275k when all is said and done, which would be good :)
March 11, 200916 yr In the current US sales climate, anything above 200k is pretty damn good :heehee: But yeah, it'll obviously be a seller over time a la Breakaway.
March 11, 200916 yr AI WILL help her. As well as MLWSWY. Although i must say im more preoccupied with All I Ever Wanted than All That I Needed :heehee: Edited March 11, 200916 yr by Joao.
March 11, 200916 yr Well, I'd say the long-term sales will determine whether this will be a flop and in the end it depends if she can pull off a string of hits from the album or not. The first-week sales thou are quite terrible even if she can get past 250k with a well-received first single and huge promo. The last album had very poorly received lead-single, little promo and horrible reviews but was still able to pull a bigger opening (and the market haven't shrunk that much since then).

That was mainly due to the success of Breakaway and the hype/controversy surrounding the album
March 11, 200916 yr Why is it flop?....Leona sold 200K and was not considered a flop... A debut album by almost unknown singer vs 4th album from established singer with very strong fanbase...cannot really compare these first-week sales at all.
March 11, 200916 yr That was mainly due to the success of Breakaway and the hype/controversy surrounding the album Yeah, certainly Breakaway helped the album but I really cannot see how the hype/controversy helped the first week sales of the album since it was all terrible hype/publicity. The hype more likely damaged the first-week sales quite a bit (I mean getting tons of bad publicity/reviews/word-of-mouth hardly causes bigger sales). More likely the first week sales were mainly thanks to her loyal fans and it just might be that they were so disappointed with the last album that this time less people are rushing into shops right away and they rather wait the follow-up singles before deciding whether to buy the album.

More recent example: Britney Spears - If U Seek Amy... Before that song even had a proper release, it was zooming up the charts as soon as it started to gain press coverage because of its slightly provocative title.
March 11, 200916 yr it's a huge flop compared to her previous albums and considering that it was soooo heavily promoted... US album sales are really a joke!!!!
March 11, 200916 yr More recent example: Britney Spears - If U Seek Amy... Before that song even had a proper release, it was zooming up the charts as soon as it started to gain press coverage because of its slightly provocative title. In Britney's case it is controversy where people get interested in the song (Britney might be a bit dirty) but in Kelly's case (Kelly's album getting horrible press etc) people were put off by the controversy. So controversy can go both ways and in these cases there were totally different controversies. I really doubt any artist out there would like to get the same kinda controversy for their album like Kelly got for her last one.
March 12, 200916 yr (and the market haven't shrunk that much since then). LMFAO. You can't be serious? Yes it has. and that is not a flop at all, even for her calibur. Under 200k... ok, but I would say this is average.
March 12, 200916 yr WTH? It's not a flop imo, more of 'great debut'. It's a flop if it didn't last long in the album chart, whether US or UK.
