Mogwai mock England World Cup hopes

Scottish post-rockers Mogwai have dismissed England's chances of winning the World Cup and criticised the "jingoism" of the English media.

The influential band, who are currently on tour promoting their latest album 'Mr Beast', posted a message on their website criticising Sven-Goran Eriksson's side after they struggled to beat Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday.

The band also blasted the "arrogant" English expectations of success at the tournament in Germany and tipped Brazil or Argentina to take home the trophy.

The band wrote: "It's happened for 40 years and has no sign of fading. I'm talking about the foolish English optimism/arrogance that attends every World Cup and after watching the first half between Trinidad and Tobago and England, they have a Kit Kat's chance in Hell of winning the tournament.

"You'd think they deserved to win the cup the way the English media blabbers on and its plain embarrassing to watch, and not a little infuriating. Jingoism is nothing to be proud of (ironically) but it rears its ugly head every four years.

"England are s****. Get over yourselves and start supporting Brazil or Argentina. That way you won't be disappointed at the final."

At least us English have not put a Football Song at #1, while the Scottish #1 is that Trinidad & Tobago World Cup song.

They give the Scottish a bad name.

Personally I find it quite insulting that they regards us as jingoistic when they actively support anyone who plays England. I mean do all Englishmen want the likes of Colin Montgomerie (Golf), David Coultard (Motor Racing) or Andy Murray (Tennis) to fail?

Of course not!

It's jealousy...

It's jealousy...

Spot On. I've changed ny mind of Scottish football now. 6 months ago I would have said I would have wanted Scotland to do well in World Cup but now I don't want them to, due to the jealousy over England just because were better at football.

They're absolutely spot on as far as I'm concerned. All this "take pride in your nation" c**p is bloody irritating. Especially when this "pride" only seems to happen every four years for some sodding sporting event, and only one particular sporting event at that. There's never been anything like the hype over the Olympic games, even though we have world class atheletes who actually have performed pretty DAMN well. Where were all the flags waving from cars, houses and shop windows for Colin Jackson, Linford Christie, Johnathan Edwards, Kelley Holmes, Paula Radcliffe, Sally Gunnell etc, etc. Sportsmen and women who, unlike any of the UK football teams, have actually bloody well achieved something in the past 40 years....

They're not regarded in the media as "Scottish" though, they're "British". Just as how Colin Jackson was never regarded as "Welsh". Funny how that works innit.....?

It's funny - this hyper-nationalistic, anti-English viewpoint that most Scots adopt vehemently ever four years makes me actually want England to do well.

Mogwai's new single might be fantastic, but I dunno if I can agree with them here...Brazil are $h!te too.

It's a c**p song being sold on the cheap to dickheads by The Sun. Just remember that they did the same south of the border with that awful, xenophobic Dad's Army song and it sold more.

I'm personally taking no flack just cos some arsehole noticed that a T&T sub had the surname Scotland.

mogwai ARE spot on... i'd just be curious if they are Scottish Football fans and how they defend that...

There's nothing wrong with being a fan of your national team - there is something wrong if you think your average team is able to win it!

While I'd like England to win it while I live here, they have maybe a 1/30 chance of doing so at best...

i'd just be curious if they are Scottish Football fans and how they defend that...

They are, but Scotland learned an important lesson in 1978 about claiming they'd win the world cup. Since then they've been optimistic, yet realistic...when they've qualified

That's a good point, there's, what, a sodding DOZEN different 'Engerrlaaand are great, rah rah rah" pieces of fukkin' pigswill doing the rounds at the moment.....? There's this saying about people who live in glass houses......

The media stokes the fires all the time with this sort of thing, if The red-tops in England are spouting a lot of pro-England bias, you can be damn sure the red-tops up in Scotland are doing the opposite. The T&T song is c**p, pretty much like every other footie-related song.

The one thing I would take issue with Mogwai on is it's all very well for them to criticise jingoism, but they should be consistent about it, I've been to three Mogwai gigs and every time I went they had St Andrews crosses draped over the amps.....

Exactly, that's the difference really... 1978 was an utter embarrassment and we learned the hard way not to be so damned cocky in the future.. England c**p out time and time again, and they still act so bloody arrogant and cocky....

England footie fans remind me of these sad, deluded tw@ts who go to Wimbledon every year and bang on about how "Tiger Tim" is gonna win it......  And every year, he craps out, without fail.....

But at least "Henmania" (*snigger*) can be easily avoided by switching channels or going out somewhere. This ruddy Enngerrrrrlaaaaaaaannnnd sh!te is unavoidable..... <_<

Ok then lets all be pessimistic and not support our national team in our #1 sport when we actually have some of the best players in the world, have had three club sides in European finals in the past two years, have beaten the current best team a matter of months and are still winning games when playing absolutely c**p (well against one good side and one not so good side) Brazil haven't been playing so well either don't forget despite winning. -_-

Scottish people are going too far now and the way they're going it's gonna be a long time before THEY qualify for anything so they'll probably get even more childish.

Dude, put it this way, if at any point in the future, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland qualified and England didn't, do you see as much fukkin' fuss about it being made in the press, the TV, do you see the likes of Motson or Lineker being as enthusiastic about Wales or Scotland being there and England not....? If Scotland or Wales had won the World cup in '66, could you see the national media still banging on about it 40 years later and continually and tediously making constant references to it every five fukkin' minutes....? Could you see a National obsession over a Scottish, Welsh or Irish player's broken fukkin' foot....?

Because, frankly, I don't.... And that is why I hate this bullsh!t. It aint so much the team I object to, it's all the nakedly, obvious English bias and all the sh!te that goes along with it (and it has been ever thus for decades...). You've obviously never actually talked to any Scottish people in your life at all if you don't understand that simple fact....

I don't see Brazilian, Argentinian or Italian fans (and living in London, I've ran into a few legions of them  ) acting in quite such an arrogant, full of sh!t, cocky-assed manner, and frankly they have a lot more reason to than you lot do.....

In short, there is a diffence between enthusiasm and arrogance....

Scotland had a good team in 78 in fairness, with Daglish, Souness etc, with a better manager, they could of gone far.

Scotland should worry about their own national team rather than looking at England all the time, I know Scotland is a small country etc, but it should still be producing better players than it has at the moment, look how well small countries like Switzerland or Czech Republic do, similar in size to Scotland, but have prety decent teams & at least qualify for tornaments, while Scotland havent qualified for anything in a decade. Problem is that their are no facilities in Scotland & Rangers are the only club that have an acadamy, until these are sorted out, Scotland will always be wishing England to lose in big tornament, while they stay at home, wishing they had the chance.

Scottish football is a joke, I don't deny it.... And we've hardly had managers which help matters either - Ally MacLeod, Andy Roxburgh, Berti Vogts......geeeeeeeez.... And you guys complain about Sven........

Celtic have an academy now too I think. One problem...and we're getting way off topic now...but anyway...one problem is that Scottish footballers are influenced too much by their agents. The moment a Hibs, Hearts or Kilmarnock player rises above mediocre they're straight off to the Old Firm who can afford to pay them another thousand pounds a week.

Cue two seasons in the reserves where they become complacent, fat and useless. Then it's straight down to the English second division with them. Some manage to return (Stephen Pressley, Kenny Miller) but none would have been as good as if they'd simply stayed at the smaller club for a few seasons, played week in week out and improved their game.

Look at the Aberdeen team which won the Cup Winners Cup in 1983 - all Scottish if I remember, all local boys. Eight out of eleven would have already left the club by the time they were 21 in today's world. The reason the Swiss and Czech teams are successful is because their players are not focused purely on cash, have some degree of loyalty and professionalism and are playing every week for their clubs - not once a month like fletcher and mcfadden.

But, so, anyway...music...

Just listened to the new Mogwai EP promo again - I don't care what they say, it's bloody marvellous.

haha - i was thinking of relating it to henman too but decided against it. That (more than any other English belief in superiority) cracks me up so much every summer. Henmen hill and all the stupid tabloids...

I'll give you this... England have a better chance of winning the cup than henman does of winnning wimbledon!

side note - is all this hype (for all the sports) mainly due to the tyipcal type of press that english subscribe too? I mean - the biggest selling 'news'paper is The Sun after all... if your newspapers were really newspapers and your tabloids just tabloids (like in the US for instance) would that help? ...just a thought...

That's a good point mate. The Red-tops try to give the ridiculous impression thay they're actually real newspapers. At least things like "National Enquirer" revel in their own stupidity and don't even attempt to sell themselves as 'serious' newspapers...

I suppose what you're saying is right though, the England footie team of the moment does have a slightly better chance of winning the WC than Henman ever had of winning a Grand Slam....

But all the hype just annoys me, I dont remember being half this irritated during the rugby world cup, and England actually did win the thing, and I actually found myself rooting for them in the final, much to my own surprise... Maybe that's cos the England rugger players just go on with it with the minimum of fuss and weren't a bunch of preening, prancing, ludicrously overpaid pricks like the footie players are....
