I was going by Rob's proviso that this charted higher in 1994...it's one of my all-time favourites.

maybe not, but its my personal chart and as you know, i didnt like the flavour/style of music from the mid 80's until the mid 90's very much. from my perspective, your chart doesnt change my mind! :P

1988, the year house music entered the mainsteam but I wll rate 1989 far higher. Those that are pro-rock amongst us may disagree as 88 being a bloody good year... I'll rule off my favorites.

Inner City - Big Fun

Inner City - Good Life

Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance

Joyce Sims - Come Into My Life

Nitro Deluxe - Let's Get Brutal

Beatmasters - Rock Da House

8th Wonder - I'm Not Scared

Bomb The Bass - Beat Dis

S Express - Theme From S Express

Prince - Alphabet Street

Funky Worm - Hustle To The Music

Coldcut & Yazz - Doctorin' the House

Pet Shop Boys - Domino Dancing

D-Mob - We Call It Acied

The Jungle Brothers - I'll House You

Raze - Break 4 Luv

Morrissey - Everyday Is Like Sunday

And the guilty pleasures...

Bananarama - I Want You Back

Taylor Dayne - Tell It To My Heart

Hazell Dean - Who's Leaving Who

Buffalo Stance peaked in 1989, so Rob might include it there - it will certainly be in my list for 1989 :D

Seems more like you gave up on music! ^_^

I mean - Loadsamoney as one of your favourite tunes of the year?

Funny at the time, sure.

And that acid house rip off/opportunism D-Mob :puke2:

I wasn't even going to bother to try changing your mind but I had to present another opinion on what was actually not a bad year.

And all my choices were top 40 hits instead of including my usual indie tunes that about 4 people originally heard!

I certainly "gave up on music" at that time. After I Should Be So Lucky...which is still a decent pop song...when the charts became dominated by Kylie/Jason and all their soundalikes...I just gave up. Mind you, it was also around the time of my A-Levels/uni too - so maybe it was more that studying took over - I can't rightly recall.

As for Loadsamoney, I hated it at the time and still do!

I don't understand why anyone would give up on music. Give up on chart music sure but there is always so much more around than just whatever is in the Top 10. If that was true I would have given up on music in 1985. And then again in 1999.

And I went to Uni in 1987 and if anything I was exposed to even more music than before. One of my favourite memories is experiencing The JAMMS on a battered old cassette and being utterly blown away.

well yes in many ways i did give up on music in the late 80's. after the heady days of punk where there was so much inovative and exciting new music, i found the late 80's very very uninspiring. i didnt like rap, i didnt like house, i didnt like indie (although i should have done a guitar groups are my traditional favs, but tbh i just found the style rather bland after punk) and i detested the new 'pop'...lol... in the late 80's i was discovering lost/forgotten tracks from the 60's which was an era i obviously favour.

as for d mob and harry enfield..... along with alot of other tracks in my charts, sometimes they are there for nostalgia value only. music is a multi facetted media, i like it on several levels and nostalgia IS one level that a 'crap' track can score highly...like 'saturday night' for eg.

my 'all time favs' are usually tracks that score highly on all levels, creative, nostalgia, meaningful, and just plain great sounds!

...... and again, there we have it. this era was YOUR era, 99% of music fans think that 'their' era was the best... ive heard it from old teddyboys, 60's fans, hippies, ageing glamrock fans, punks, skins, ska and two tone, and in 20 years time todays teens will cite the 00's indie scene as the 'best ever'. the reasons stated are always the same ones.... 'they dont make music like that anymore', 'todays music is utter crap' (and that mantra has been around as long as i can remember...early 60's at least) ........... it is of course all subjective.

i was 30 in 87, married with 1 , 2 year old daughter... hardly the target audience for 'the jamms', ive always maintained that pop music should be youth lead, if oldies also like it then fair enough, but by the late 80's music was starting to be lead by old men... no wonder then that young people at uni had their own 'underground' music scene.

as my seriese will probabally show, it wasnt until britpop and trance that my contemporary musical tastebuds were re-ignited. britpop because it drew heavily on the 60's, and trance because it was a whole new sound, and one that by 99 became a firm favourite.

Every year since about 1978 has been my era and I could easily get 90-100 tracks from every year because I NEVER GAVE UP ON MUSIC even though I am now 40 years old. I suppose the big difference is I have never had kids but I am a responsible adult with a time consuming job. There are always good records around, even in the fallow years (for me!) of 1999 and 2000, I just had to look harder.

well i looked harder, into retro! i also went into world music, folk and classical... so i didnt give up on music per se... just current music that simply wasnt to my taste. i think doing the whole marriage 2.4 kids thing nearly lost me my interest in music, i nearly became arrested in 'my era' as so many people do. i had the 60's, i had the punk era, from my perspective the late 80's simply didnt measure up.

I think this does happen to a lot of people. My inspiration was John Peel and if he could look into new areas and find good stuff then so could I. That being said I did also look back at times to find "new" retro stuff. I went into Krautrock and Ambient House and electronica took my interests outside run of the mill indie.
