Culture Club to reform without Boy George

Monday, June 19 2006, 15:15 BST - by Matt Houghton

'80s pop group Culture Club are to reform for a tour - but without their iconic frontman Boy George.

Record label bosses want to replace him with a flamboyant singer and performer, but not a carbon copy of the legendary singer.

An advert posted on gumtree read: "We want a unique vocalist with a brilliant voice to take part in a 2007 World Tour and TV series.

"We do not want a karaoke Boy George 'lookalike' but a charismatic and unique performer in his or her own right with something truly fresh, contemporary and original to offer."

The band split in 1997 and reformed in 1998, before splitting up again shortly afterwards.

so who would make the perfect singer for them?

Wouldn't be the same without Boy George though. I can't think of anyone who would replace him.

What a patently ludicrous idea, Culture Club were defined by Boy George's unique singing style and image, this has to be probably the worst idea since The Doors reformed with Ian Astbury attempting to replace Jim Morrison...... <_<

Christ, who's it gonna be next - The Beatles without John and George...? The Smiths without Morrissey?

on the news it said that upto 5 people might take his place.

(boy george's new reggae stuff got a good review in the independent the other week when he played live. 4 stars)

Boy George IS Culture Club, whether the rest of the band like that fact or not.

There simply isn't anyone with the balls or attitude BG had.... not in today's musical landscape, anyway.

Bad idea.... the band must be desperate.

Crazy idea, Culture IS Boy George, it'll never work!

But no doubt he is to busy sweeping roads as part of his community service!!!

think its a fun idea. why not go the whole hog and replace boy george with s club 7!!! cool bizarre retro mash up

Just found this...

Boy George trashed

Boy George is to become a trashman

A New York judge has ordered the former Culture Club frontman - real name George O'Dowd - to do five days of community service after he admitted to wasting police time.

On hearing the decision, the star joked: "I've always been a scrubber."

Keith Mellis, spokesman for the New York Department of Sanitation, said: "He will be part of our team. We won't know exactly what he will be doing for several weeks, though."

The sentence was handed down after George telephoned police and falsely reported a burglary at his Manhattan apartment last October.

If the 'Karma Chameleon' singer fails to carry out his community service, Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Anthony Ferrara has threatened to send him to jail.

Meanwhile, George's former band, Culture Club, are to reunite - without him.

They have placed an advert for a vocalist, which reads: "We want a unique vocalist with a brilliant voice to take part in a 2007 world tour and TV series.

"We do not want a karaoke Boy George 'lookalike' but a charismatic and unique performer in his or her own right."
