Posted April 21, 200916 yr With the TV network Upfronts a few weeks away, we're almost at the point where final decisions will be made on which shows will be renewed for next season. The Hollywood Reporter has a new article discussing the prospects for many "on the bubble" shows still awaiting renewal - and there is reason for concern when it comes to several low rated series that are particularly popular with the IGN staff and readers, including Chuck, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Reaper. CBS: The Reporter expects How I Met Your Mother (whose ratings have been up) to get its usual last minute pick up and the successful Friday night shows Numb3rs and Ghost Whisperer are also expected to return. However, two long running series, Without a Trace and Cold Case, are in jeopardy, due to increased costs – the Reporter says the chances are 50/50 for both, and that it's expected CBS will choose to renew one of the two. In bigger trouble are The Unit and Eleventh Hour, though the Reporter says The Unit's chances look better recently, as the network has asked to hear potential story ideas for another season. FOX: Not shockingly, the two shows listed as in jeopardy are the much discussed Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dollhouse. Last week, after EW.com said Terminator was cancelled, writers from the show responded saying this was not yet the case. However, like other outlets, the Reporter says Terminator is "all but gone", though they give the slightly better rated Dollhouse 50/50 chances of returning. It's expected that FOX will renew Fringe and Lie to Me. NBC: The big dilemma facing many on the bubble shows at NBC is the network's decision to give Jay Leno a new 10:00pm talk show in the fall on Mondays through Fridays, which takes away five hours of scripted programs a week. This makes the battle for the time slots left on the schedule much fiercer. The show many fans (and us at IGN) are most concerned about at NBC is Chuck, which has struggled in the ratings, but has a notable online fandom and probably the biggest critical support of any "on the bubble" show this year. The Reporter thinks the promising ratings for the first two weeks of Southland jeopardize Chuck, as Southland looks likely to get a renewal. Medium -- which gets the best ratings of NBC's Monday line up -- is said to have a better chance than Chuck for renewal, though Chuck is at least somewhat helped by having its first ratings bump in awhile occur last week. NBC executives are also said to be fans of the show, which hopefully will help it get a renewal. Life and Kath & Kim (along with Kings) are presumed dead, while the original Law & Order is expected to be renewed for its 20th season, but probably not for a full 22 episode season (SVU has already been renewed). NBC has previously said they intend to renew Heroes, though on the heels of a very troubled season that saw the ratings drop dramatically, it too will have a reduced order - likely around 18 episodes. Most believe NBC will bring back their recent comedy Parks and Recreation, hoping to build its audience, as they did with The Office. ABC: The Reporter says Cupid has been "written off", but that other recent debuts Better Off Ted, The Unusuals and Castle all have fans at the network and are still under consideration. ABC is going to attempt to boost Unusuals this week by airing an episode after their hugely rated Dancing with the Stars results show. CW: With the show's creators taking a new deal with another studio, Reaper is considered dead. Privileged had been looking gone too until recently, as CW is now considering picking up the well-received series for a midseason order. The Reporter doesn't mention Everybody Hates Chris and The Game, with other recent reports saying both are dead – though The Game's creator is pitching a revamp to the network (which has abandoned half hour comedies) to alter the show into an hour-long dramedy. IGN Well, i know some of my fave shows have been renewed (Big Bang Theory, Two And A Half Men, One Tree Hill) but im still very much waiting on news on Dollhouse, How I Met Your Mother and Bones. I believe The Simpsons is also returning for the new year... Is your show "on the bubble"? Has it been renewed? What show do you want to/dont want to come back?
April 21, 200916 yr I'm disappointed to see Reaper is not coming back. I'd really gotten into it watching the repeats on T4 :(
April 21, 200916 yr I'm disappointed to see Reaper is not coming back. I'd really gotten into it watching the repeats on T4 :( Repear is brilliant, I'm tempted to purchase a DVD of the series if there is one..
April 21, 200916 yr Reaper is good (and I find it quite funny) but it had a low budget to begin with, and the repitition of the storylines isn't very good and not that interesting. Its got potential, but The CW isn't a very good network. Its basically the channel 5 of the UK. I'd place good money on Without A Trace, Chuck, Sarah Connor Chronicles all to go. Dollhouse is touch and go. I have a feeling FOX will give it another season due to the fanbase it has and Whedon being behind the show too. But at the end of the day a lot of it will go down to the strengths of the new pilots being pitched to the new networks. I've personally not seen any yet, but a few of them have very impressive concepts and cast lists. NBC has the big new original sci-fi show that is almost certainly gonna get picked up imo (is about the aftermatch of the end of the world imo, sounds very interesting). ABC also has V (the comic) which I would place money on being picked up, and then there's a new police drama starring Rupert Penry-Jones as the lead which I think will get picked up as well. Fringe and Bones 100% sure to get another season.
April 21, 200916 yr Smallville needs to die, how far can they take the series, I used to be fan of the series but now I don't bother watching it. Last I heard about Sarah Connor Chronicles, its dead and buried there are no plans for a 3rd season according to an article piece in Sci-fi Now magazine. I'm glad the Fringe is picked up for another season its pretty good.
April 21, 200916 yr Fringe isn't 100% confirmed, but it will be picked up. Its improved on its ratings and is holding steady and I have a feeling the last few episodes will pull in more viewers for who is guesting in it. Smallville is like CW's highest rated show. No way they're gonna axe it. That, One Tree Hill, Supernatural, America's Next Top Model and Gossip Girl are likes its flag ship shows atm and are probably the only reason why the network hasn't folded yet.
April 21, 200916 yr T:TSCC won't stand much chance I don't think. Can't believe Smallville is still going- what are we on, Season 9?! I will get round to watching it some day. I don't care as long as we get: One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, Supernatural, Fringe and I'd like Dollhouse for a second season. And I really think The CW should greenlight a Veronica Mars fourth season tbh, it would happen in my world, but not a chance in this one.
April 21, 200916 yr One Tree Hill, Supernatural and Gossip Girl have already been picked up for next year as far as i'm aware. I know the first two have definitely. Sarah Connor Chronicles was dead from the moment FOX put it in the Fridy night timeslot. I think Summer Glau is leaving at the end of the current series anyway.
April 21, 200916 yr Noooo. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has turned into one of my favorite shows to watch. I knew ever since FOX moved it to Friday that it wouldn't last... :(
April 21, 200916 yr Author One Tree Hill, Supernatural and Gossip Girl have already been picked up for next year as far as i'm aware. I know the first two have definitely. One Tree Hill is contracted to go on for at least another 2 years, most of the actors have renewed their contracts although there are a few that are still touch and go... Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men have been picked up for multiple seasons, 2.5Men for another 3 seasons and Big Bang for another 2... Smallville is another one thats touch and go... Ive heard that most of the actors dont want to come back and that the show was contracted for 8 seasons... which means that it might not return... Dollhouse i think is more shifted to being picked up since the heads at FOX apparently "get" the show and are giving it their full support.. Although the axing of Episode 13 makes me think otherwise... The big question though is... SCRUBS :o With creator, Bill Lawrence, and main man Zach Braff and Judy Reyes leaving it seems that the show may end after this season. The last episode of the season is currently billed as the season finale rather than series.
April 21, 200916 yr ABC only agreed to take Scrubs for one season iirc, but that can change. But ABC would be MAD to think Scrubs could work without JD.
April 21, 200916 yr One Tree Hill, Supernatural and Gossip Girl have already been picked up for next year as far as i'm aware. I know the first two have definitely. GG & it's spin-off 'Lily' are definites aswell as OTH & Super :) good times. Although I'm pretty sure Smallville's ninth season is confirmed? Also - I'll miss Samantha Who, last I heard that was on hiatus/cancelled? Anyone know for sure?
April 22, 200916 yr GG & it's spin-off 'Lily' are definites aswell as OTH & Super :) good times. Although I'm pretty sure Smallville's ninth season is confirmed? Also - I'll miss Samantha Who, last I heard that was on hiatus/cancelled? Anyone know for sure? Noooo. Samantha Who too?!?! All my favorites are going... If you mean this season then it just returned a few weeks ago with new episodes on Thursday nights here. I'm not sure about a new season though.
April 22, 200916 yr Author It was on Hiatus during the 08/09 season but returned like the last week of March but i havent heard anything about it being cancelled/renewed.

April 22, 200916 yr Shame about Dirty Sexy Money, I liked it. But I guess it's similar to Gossip Girl, except GG is a bit trendier and so they figure people won't watch both...
April 22, 200916 yr Dirty Sexy Money flopped BIG TIME in the US this season. Donald Sutherland already has been cast in a new pilot too.
April 22, 200916 yr Author Gary, CMM not returning isnt 100% the producers are renegotiating with some of the actors (2 in particular) after a huge uproar on the net. Massive video on YT too...
