Katy Perry kicks Lady Gaga off her

Twitter throne

Washington – Katy Perry is the first person

ever to have more than 50 million followers on

Twitter.

Twitter Counter, a service for tracking Twitter

usage, predicted that Perry, 29, whose Dark

Horse featuring Juicy J is atop this week's

Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, would roar

through the 50 million barrier sometime on

Friday. And it has!

On Friday, her @katyperry account claimed

50,006,836 followers.

"Crazy, isn't it?" said Twitter Counter in an e-

mail, adding that Perry - who tweets regularly

to her fans, but follows only 130 people herself

- "never really shared her Twitter milestones".

Teen idol Justin Bieber dethroned Lady Gaga

as the most followed Twitter user in January

last year, but ceded the top spot to Perry in

November, with US President Barack Obama

in third place.

Bieber now has 49,214,521 followers who no

doubt are closely following his recent run-ins

with the law, including charges of driving

under the influence in Florida and

misdemeanour assault in Canada.

Lady Gaga, now in fourth place with 41,024

939 followers, made Twitter history when she

became the first to claim 20 million followers -

just under two years ago, in March 2012.

Obama, whose Twitter account is managed by

Organising for Action, the legacy of his 2012

campaign apparatus, has 41,211,859

followers.

Perry's current album Prism entered the

Billboard 200 chart at number one upon its

release in October.

Her dark goth-themed rendition of Dark Horse

was a highlight of Sunday's Grammy awards.

One Direction member Liam Payne is showing us how to Live While We’re Young whilst on a tropical getaway.

 

On Tuesday (Febuary 4), the One Direction star tweeted out a photo of him enjoying the view and basking in the sun whilst on his island vacation – and proving that the boy can accessorise.

 

The photo, which was shared with his 15.5 million followers, shows Payne shirtless, standing in the shallows of an inviting pool whilst the sun beats down on him and he gazes off into the distance – all while strategically clutching two large orange seashells to his chest.

The photo was a hit with followers - with 98,769 people favoriting the post!

 

But they weren’t the only ones who were fans of the photo. Lady Gaga (who has become a regular seashell bra wearer) tweeted out her support for Payne’s choice of accessorising.

Gaga was first seen rocking the seashell bra in her music video ‘Applause’ where she recreated the image of Botticelli’s ‘The Birth of Venus’, and outfit repeated again for her performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards – which may be where Liam got his inspiration for his photo.
