May 14, 200916 yr Oh, and Kopecka WILL be monitoring for when the thread is opened. Just so the winner of XVI knows in advance, the confirmation/artist reservation thread will not be opened straight afterwards as we have a spin-off to deal with first! :P really, in that case if the next actual BJSC isn't for 6-8 weeks, Battlefield might already seem old
May 14, 200916 yr I better start finding a foreign language song I can enjoy enough to send. I'd much rather have something like a remix spin-off.

May 14, 200916 yr True, even though it's one of my least favourite on the album. I'm actually obsessed with "Call Me Guilty" from it, it's got such a catchy chorus, I like the little phone call and police bits and the subject would probably make it stand out. But, yeah, I'd never send it because it just doesn't do that well. Brandy was more Pop and one of the best R&B songs this year could only scrape 10th last month. don't be afraid of bad results, send the song that you want to send, you never know what song could end up doing a Black Butta :P I broke free from worrying about getting good results a long time ago and the contest is a lot more enjoyable because of it ^_^ once you DNQ once, it feels so much easier to send riskier songs and in my mind, I feel that the quality of Rontvian entries has slightly improved because of it, whether they DNQ or not :o
May 14, 200916 yr I better start finding a foreign language song I can enjoy enough to send. I'd much rather have something like a remix spin-off. I'd be enjoying it as much as i enjoyed a UK No.10's tbh, i.e. for about 6 out of 10 :( don't be afraid of bad results, send the song that you want to send, you never know what song could end up doing a Black Butta :P I broke free from worrying about getting good results a long time ago and the contest is a lot more enjoyable because of it ^_^ once you DNQ once, it feels so much easier to send riskier songs and in my mind, I feel that the quality of Rontvian entries has slightly improved because of it, whether they DNQ or not :o Have nothing to add to this brilliant post ^_^
May 14, 200916 yr the only thing with remix spin-offs is that I really don't have time to listen to 50 eight minute remixes...then again, a lot of people would probably send edited remixes or things like Jason Nevins mixes which are usually no longer than 4 minutes anyway... I already have a song for a foreign language spin-off, it's a French song but it has three words of English in it in the chorus so I'm not sure if it would be allowed
May 14, 200916 yr Author A spin-off next, did you say? :w00t: I am hosting, right? I am going on holiday on 24th May, but only for 3 days, that won't be too much of a problem, will it?

It has exactly three words in English in the chorus! Plus a few repeating words in the end though :kink:

May 14, 200916 yr A remix spin-off would be immense  Yesss, as long as people didn't send loads of 6 minute + ones, that'd take a long time to listen to. don't be afraid of bad results, send the song that you want to send, you never know what song could end up doing a Black Butta :P I broke free from worrying about getting good results a long time ago and the contest is a lot more enjoyable because of it ^_^ once you DNQ once, it feels so much easier to send riskier songs and in my mind, I feel that the quality of Rontvian entries has slightly improved because of it, whether they DNQ or not :o I suppose, I'm just of the firm belief that anything R&B has a tougher time making it through unless it's a Pop cross-over. I guess it's just my mindset, I'd rather make the final than send something I love more and scrape 20 points together in the semi. "Black Butta" is a long time ago, it finished 19th in the Best Of and I have doubts that it would have made it through the semis. I'd be enjoying it as much as i enjoyed a UK No.10's tbh, i.e. for about 6 out of 10 :( I guess it depends what people sent. I suppose there's the chance that popular remixes of things like "Work" by Kelly Rowland, "Beautiful Liar" by Beyonce and Shakira will be sent but I always love hearing new remixes of songs, whether it's a song I knew before or not. I guess it'd be boring if we all sent things like "So What", "Poker Face" etc. but I reckon there'd be a bit more variety than that. (or am I being optimistic?)

Yeah, I don't particularly like that bit either. I reckon they'd be few and far between though. A bit like when people send remixes to the main contest (David Guetta; Kelly Rowland/Britney/Dead Disco) they aren't usually that much longer, if at all. (my entry this month is shorter than the main radio edit) People don't usually send eight minute songs, so I don't think they would in a remix spin off.
May 14, 200916 yr A Remix spin off is too damn similar in concept to the main contest, therefore surely defeating the object of a spin off contest.
May 14, 200916 yr I don't really bother listening let alone downloading remixes for songs, the only ones i know and like are Bloc Party's Intimacy or Maroon 5's Remixed albums  That's only me though.
May 14, 200916 yr A Remix spin off is too damn similar in concept to the main contest, therefore surely defeating the object of a spin off contest. But I don't think there is any spin off we can do that is too different to the main contest. Remixes historically perform badly in the contest, more so than foreign language songs. As far as I can remember, we have yet to have one finish in the top 10 whereas foreign language songs have had "Elle Ella L'a", "Rosa Pastel", "Moi...Lolita" and "Emenne-Moi" from the recent era who have finished top 10. To me, a foreign language spin off isn't much of a theme either.

As far as I can remember more foreign songs have been sent than remixes, maybe that's the one that's too similar to a normal contest....

May 14, 200916 yr Ella Elle L'A excepted, I think foreign language songs have a stigma in this contest. It seems very difficult to score big points with one, or be thought of as a favourite. TBH I think some people don't bother listening to them. Since the contest seems more to be about "who can reserve the biggest hit artist quickest" these days, I think the Foreign Language spinoff would give a lot of variety...
