May 14, 200916 yr I don't really bother listening, let alone downloading, songs not in English. The only ones I have and like are a few from the last Yelle album and a couple of Sigur Ros songs. That's only me though. Haha, love it. Ella Elle L'A excepted, I think foreign language songs have a stigma in this contest. It seems very difficult to score big points with one, or be thought of as a favourite. TBH I think some people don't bother listening to them. Since the contest seems more to be about "who can reserve the biggest hit artist quickest" these days, I think the Foreign Language spinoff would give a lot of variety... Perhaps they do. I don't think we've had a proper one finish in the top 5, but we've had enough that have made top 10 to weaken the case for a foreign language spin-off. They're not likely to be seen as favourites but neither are males, remixes etc. I certainly listen to them, but they rarely get past the first listen as it's not my thing. I think we've had four remixes sent in the whole contest. One didn't make it, two finished in the bottom two of the final and the other is my current entry, which has been predicted low top 10 - which would be a first. Foreign language songs have had at least that many entries that have made the top 10. (if we want to be really pedantic, there were at least another 3 foreign top 10 finishers pre-VII)
May 14, 200916 yr It's not really though is it. Foreign songs don't do as well because it's not what people like and they can't relate to them as well. I don't really see any stigma attatched to them at all and they have done well in the past. It's hard to score points or be top of the odds with an indie/alternative or rap song. Does that mean that people don't listen to them and that there's a stigma? No, it's because it's not what people like. Edit: This was to replay to TomKay/Addy. Since the contest seems more to be about "who can reserve the biggest hit artist quickest" these days, I think the Foreign Language spinoff would give a lot of variety... I'm hoping that this is just a phase as although the contest is undoubtedly becoming of a higher quality overall, I'm discovering far fewer brand new songs than I used to due to the tendency for people to lean on songs due out in a few weeks that a lot us already know...I do try to reflect this in my points by shunting the already fairly well known songs down to the bottom of the rating group...e.g. if there are eight 9/10 songs, the one least likely to get my support is the one sitting inside the UK top ten :heehee: if the song's good enough, originality will always score well with me  and I agree to a point actually, there are no huge future foreign language singles on the horizon that I can see so it would certainly be less of a rush to the next big thing...but I won't force the issue, I'm as happy not to do a foreign language spin-off as I would be to do one...I listen to a fair bit of foreign language music myself, but I'm aware that not everyone does and better to have a theme that is more universally liked
May 14, 200916 yr Well, excluding Karolina - Se Lažam Sebe that finished 6th in BJSCI ( :heehee: ) and some others from I-III only a few songs has been sent to have a success. The contest: the best finishing place of the foreign song: number of foreign entries IV: 16th: 2 V: 3rd: 5 (3 DNQ'd and the highest finished is Je Ne Parle Pas Francais  ) VI: 24th: 3 VII: N/A: 0 VIII: 6th: 3 IX: 10th: 1 X: 14th: 4 XI: DNQ: 1 XII: 23rd: 3 XIII: N/A: 0 XIV: 10th: 2 XV: DNQ: 4 26 - that makes a whole contest... every 13 contests  Is it still "different to the main contest"?

May 14, 200916 yr ^ I don't really bother listening let alone downloading remixes for songs, the only ones i know and like are Bloc Party's Intimacy or Maroon 5's Remixed albums  That's only me though. May 14, 200916 yr IMO having a remix spin off its the same as #10 spin off...and we all know wasnt that much fun, because we knew 90% of songs...if not 100%.
May 14, 200916 yr Why number 10 anyway? That was before my time but seems completely random. Why not, say, number 23? *preps Verka Serduchka :kink:*

I agree, but I guess the likes of RabbitFurCoat would rather have a competition full of this: Girls Aloud Megamix (CD single of Something Kinda Oooh) & this: Britney Spears Chris Cox Greatest Hit Megamix = http://qs1435.pair.com/urbanout/blog/images/uploads/cheapaschips.jpg than have a competition full of songs in foreign languages, (or some other theme/concept different that means the usual generic suspects that appear within the main contest cannot be used) that most people have not heard before.

Why exclude stuff from I-III? Anyway, I don't see why this is an argument for a foreign spin off? It shows that at least four have finished top 10. (didn't "Opium" finish top 10 in VI as well?) We've had 4 remixes in 16 contests and probably less Rap, Metal etc. than foreign songs. It's because it's rare that Buzzjack likes this sort of thing. None of the foreign entries have bowled everyone over bu they never will imo. Yeah...I think people will be a bit more creative than that. I'd be surprised if anyone used one of those Megamix things or even the well known remixes Freemasons did for the likes of Kelly Rowland, Beyonce or Solange. The thing with remixes is that most artists have them done, there's nothing stopping us from finding an unknown artisted that's been remixed be a lesser known name. It's nowhere near as restrictive as #10s. What's saying the usual generic suspects wont crop up in this one either? I know my best chances of finding a foreign song I like would be going down the Nelly Furtado, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera etc. route.
May 14, 200916 yr ^ I REALLY don't see the point in this repeat-parrot game  Bother to explain? :| You just seem to be posting a lot about how foreign would be the best and nothing else pleases you. Well, there are plenty of people who think the opposite. I know you're probably not meant to be doing to, but you just seem to be all 'me, me, me' with the issue.

It's still less different to remixes considering there have been less than half the amount of those than foreign language songs...

Oh FFS you know FULL WELL that I wouldn't! :manson: 1) For a start they're mash-ups, not remixes. 2) There could be rules. It wouldn't have to just be a any-version-of-a-song-which-is-slightly-different-to-the-radio-edit contest.
