Well here we are in 2009, the last year of the decade, another decade of excellent ESC songs, arguably better than the 90's too...and here is the breakdown of where my favourite songs come from;

2000 = 3

2001 = 8

2002 = 4

2003 = 7

2004 = 4

2005 = 4

2006 = 5

2007 = 5

2008 = 5

2009 = 5

this is rather unexpected, I always thought that 2003 was one of the weaker years, yet seven of my favourites come from there!!! In contrast, 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2005 were apparently the weaker contests for me, which again is more or less what I thought...2002 having 8 songs is no surprise, it has always been my favourite contest in terms of songs quality :wub: so without further ado, I'll kick off the countdown:

50. Nox - Forogj Vilag - Hungary 2005

ESC Result: 12th in the final

Peak in my personal chart: #10

Why I love it: Blending folk sounds with contemporary beats, Hungary placed themselves truly back on the map with this excellent song, with an infectious na-na-na hook and it's a shame it just missed out on a top ten position in 2005...

49. Jemini - Cry Baby - United Kingdom 2003

ESC Result: last in the final

Peak in my personal chart: #4

Why I love it: Horrendous to watch, like some completely out of tune Butlins entertainer warm up performance, Liverpudlian duo Jemini gave the UK their first and only (to date) nul points by completely clashing with the backing vocalists throughout...having said that, I absolutely loved this song at the time, very good cheesy pop!

48. Michelle - Out On My Own - The Netherlands 2001

ESC Result: 18th in the final

Peak in my personal chart: #2

Why I love it: A pleasant and completely underrated song from The Netherlands which flopped in the very high quality 2001 contest. I absolutely love the message of the song and the backing track is gorgeous. Her performance could have been a bit better but I doubt it would have helped the form of the Netherlands who haven't had a semi-decent result in years...the other Michelle from 2001 is up later!

47. The Ark - The Worrying Kind - Sweden 2007

ESC Result: 18th in the final

Peak in my personal chart: #4

Why I love it: A glam rock special from one of Sweden's favourite bands, this owed a lot to 'Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes' and was completely different to the usual Swedish ABBA-like schlager-pop. Unfortunately, this risk did not pay off for Sweden as they flopped in the final but all credit for doing something different, although the other songs in Melodifestivalen's all male top 3 that year; Cara Mia by Mans Zelmerlow and A Little Bit Of Love by Andreas Johnson, were miles better!

Cool idea, love this! :wub: Maybe I will do mine soon from the whole history with Eurovision. I agree about Nox and Michelle, but I thought Jemini was awful from day 1 - and I say that as a huge Steps fan :kink:

The Ark rocked too :dance:

46. Alsou - Solo - Russia 2000

ESC Result: 2nd in the final

Peak in my personal chart: N/A

Why I love it: One of Russia's many many top 3 finishes this decade, young singer Alsou, swept into 2nd place with her absolutely excellent, very contemporary pop song, not unlike the sort of thing the Britney's/Christina's/Mandy's and Jessica's of the time were churning out...definitely one of my favourite Russian entries, would have been a far better maiden winner for them than Believe and it's a shame it didn't overhaul the Olsen Brothers

:heehee: Jemini's song was shamefully good, I bought it on single the week after the dreaded performance!!!

Remembering your last year's chart I presume the leader has changed :o

last year I did the top 40 of all time, this is my top 50 of the decade, and there have been a lot of changes! I forgot some songs :kink: some have fallen and others have soared :o

I've got to do it too now that my Eurovision excitement is 100% active :w00t:

Some great songs so far, Rich! :o

what gets me is that whilst Jemini were utterly and completely off key and out of tune at times, so were tATu, yet they came 3rd :wacko:

tATu:

- Kissed onstage

- Were well-known, all around Europe...rather ironic that the UK and Ireland gave them nothing though!

- Had a song which transferred well to the stage and stood up well despite the off-key performance. Cry Baby by contrast was hideous to listen to :(

thank god we didn't give them anything, it would have been a tragic winner and the points were so close that a 3 or above from the UK would have given them victory...and this is coming from someone who has always been a relatively big tATu fan

Ne Ver Ne Bojsa was actually really good :o I loved that year's top five though :wub: Belgium and Turkey were outstanding, but in hindsight Belgium would've been the better winners...and maybe 1 Life wouldn't have flopped so much the next year :cry:

I much preferred 1 Life to Sanomi but I found neither track outstanding...at least Turkey won with one of their better tracks...they usually seem to come top ten with anything and I'd hate to have seen something like their 2004 or 2008 entries win :puke:
