Zakk Wylde Slams Metallica + Aerosmith

Zakk Wylde Slams Metallica and Aerosmith was a top story for this week. Here it is again: (Rock Radio) Zakk Wylde of Black Label Society and Ozzy Osbourne fame has slammed what he sees as fakes in the rock industry, including Aerosmith, Metallica and "professional" songwriters. In an interview with Gibson.com the guitarist explains he believes in honesty and strength, and if you don't have those you have "no business making records".

He says: "I laugh when I go into a music store and there's a title called How To Write Songs. You can't teach someone how to write a song.Angus Young didn't need books to learn to write Hells Bells. The musicians I grew up on and loved - like Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix - it's their names on their songs. That's the beauty of buying a record by a real artist.

"Appetite for Destruction was written by Guns n' Roses, not some weak-asses like those lame songwriters on Aerosmith. Aerosmith wrote great songs like Dream On and Back in the Saddle when they were on booze and drugs. Next thing you know, they get sober and bring songwriters in, and then it's the most watered-down $h!t. If you can't write songs you're as phoney as Britney Spears. You don't have any business making records."

Do you agree?

Can't speak for Metallica but as far as I know for Aerosmith, Steven Tyler frankly addmited, "I can't write songs anymore" [although he still co-writes them with proffesional song writers]. But to compare Metallica/+ Aerosmith to Britney Spears is ridiculous, in my opinion, as long as the band play well and write/produce MUSIC together well, then I'm not overally fussed. Although self-written lyrics to help.
I wonder what Aerosmith tracks he was referring to and whether he was referring to the music, the lyrics or the whole package? I also wonder when he thinks it all went down the pan - I thought they still producing quality material until the mid to late 90's.

Mainy the lyrics, but I guess the whole MTV-sound during the early ninties [Cryin' etc.] and nearer to the end the horrific Dianne Warren penned 'I Dont Wanna Miss A Thing'. However, Honkin On The Bobo is amazing, seeing as it's just an album of old blues covers. :heehee:

I guessed so, and I agree with that. Most of the Nine Lives album from 1997 was really good - it seemed to be after that that they lost it somewhat.

I dunno why he's bringing Metallica into it.... All the songs on 'Death Magnetic' are written by the band.... Bob Rock had a hand in songwriting on St Anger, but he was bloody producer of the album and therefore part of the overall creative process, not exactly one of these "rent-a-lyric" types like Dianne Warren that I presume Wylde is complaining about.....

Yeah, Metallica and Aerosmith write their songs, so what's his problem?

Fair enough, but pop music's business is different to rock music's.

I agree.. but Britney does write all of her unreleased stuff that Jive won't put out because it's not commerical. So whoever said this original point needs to check their facts, had they said Paris Hilton or Brooke Hogan or Rihanna; their point woulda come across better.

Well, how would he necessarily know this if all the singles are written by someone else....? I think he's talking more about the higher profile material as opposed to album tracks... And, she was very, very manufactured.. Perhaps she needs to put her foot down a bit with her record company (I mean, what could they do if she got more assertive..? Kill the goose laying all these golden eggs...?) more and get her own material into higher profile...

Well the point I'm making is that if he is going to namedrop, he might as well have accurate facts. She was indeed manufactured to begin with; I'd go as far as saying Britney Spears was a franchise, but times have changed.

Well to be fair though, every song she's released as a single has been written by someone else, bar 'Everytime'.

Well, I'd still argue that she's a franchise, and there are still serious questions over lip-synching during this Circus Tour atm..... Personally, if she aint singing live at her gigs, then I dont view her with any credibility as an artist.... Not that I really believe she has all that much anyway, given the fact that Pepsi seems to own her....

Questions over her lip-synching? There are no questions; in the entertainment news on Radio 1 today they said that she lip-synched every track last night with the exception of "Sometimes". Then they had a few of her fans saying things like "I don't care, I love her anyway" and "when you're dancing like that it's impossible to sing."

I don't hate the music that she's released, in fact some of it has been pretty good, but thank gawd I don't pay much attention to the artists themselves - just the music. Aside from that, if I'm going to a gig, Britney would be one of the last acts I'd choose to see.

That's a really lame attitude... You pay, what, over £100 quid to go to a concert and the "main act" cant even be bothered to sing live.... Fukk off.... Some "fans" are really just that stupid aren't they....? I mean, sorry, you'd might as well take a hundred quid and set fire to it, or stick it down a drain..... If any of the bands I went to see perform live came away with a pathetic excuse like "Well, I'd like to sing it live, but it interferes with me climbing on the monitors, jumping off the drum kit, running around, etc" I'd tell them to FOAD.....* What's the point in doing all the "rock star" stuff if you cant cut it live...? Why dont her fans want to hear her actually SING the songs that they've paid all that money to hear.....? Stupid... If I went to see that Led Zep reunion gig and it turned out that Jimmy Page, DIDN'T play all the notes, I'd be utterly GUTTED.....

*that's FUKK OFF AND DIE!!!!! by the way.....

She doesn't associate with Pepsi anymore.

You sure it's not more like Pepsi doesn't associate with her.....? :P

Doesn't alter the fact that she still sold her ass to Pepsi and pimped herself out....
