It has a 76% on Rottentomatoes...not AMAZING reviews but I certainly wouldn't call that mediocre.

I can sense it dropping though. It'll end up in the 60% zone I bet. Bruno isn't as funny as Borat obviously.

You're right, I guess I was just going off the Nytimes, WashPost and Chicago Trib reviews I read. Robert Ebert liked it a lot, though!

RELEASE THE WOLVES.

Not really mate... The average cinema-goer age in UK is much older than in the US.... An 18 isn't nearly as damaging in UK as an NC17 is in the States.... It's hard to believe but, there are so many Cinemas in the US that wont actually show a film rated NC17.... Which is just absolutely ridiculous, basically, that says to every single American adult that isn't in a state such as New York or California, that they cant have films showing in multiplexes that are purely for adults purely on some kind of ridiculous "moral code" that big cinema chains in the US operate.... NC17 usually means sex rather than violence... So, the Yanks would rather their kids be exposed to acts of torture and mutilation than sexual scenes... No wonder the US is a fukked-up country.....

I read the film was actually re-edited before release so it would be given an R rating. So it should still be a big hit at the US box office as well. He's made his rounds on the late shows and there's been a lot of hype this week.

Saw this yesterday... Tbh, it has its moments, but if you've seen Borat, you wouldn't exactly be missing much if you passed on this one...... It basically IS the Borat film with a high-maintenance Gay character instead of a funny Eastern European...... The structure is virtually the same, so in a sense, it's "money for old rope".. And, there's one or two scenes where you fell more embarrassed for the guy on the receiving end of the "joke".... The scene with US Senator Ron Paul, simply isn't funny, and, frankly, his reaction is kind of natural when you consider that he's clearly NOT "in" on the joke, I mean, sorry to cause anyone any offence, but how would ANY heterosexual guy react if a predatory gay man dropped his trousers in front of him in a bedroom...? What did Sacha really gain from doing that scene...? It hardly does the Gay community any favours (and seeing as how Sacha isn't even gay himself, actually makes HIM appear more anti-gay than Ron Paul tbh..), and it has the unfortunate side effect of audience sympathies being drawn to a bloody US Senator, which is surely NOT the idea....... So, the film loses marks with me for THAT scene, tbh. It left a nasty taste in the mouth and simply fell totally flat and almost derails the entire film..... I mean, never mind cutting out jokes with Latoya Jackson, if any scene should have been cut from the film, then it really should have been this one..... Similarly, the scene with Bruno and the guys in the woods starts out amusing, but ends up being rather creepy, and again, you really have to wonder just what Sacha is doing...

Some scenes are pretty good though - The swingers party is superbly done, and you can actually see genuine fear in Sacha's eyes when he's being whipped by that mad blonde woman.... So, the "joke" in effect is turned on the "joker" and Bruno, literally, runs for his life.... Nothing like a bit of Schadenfreude is there.....? The scenes with "OJ" are well done too, as is the final sequence at one of those "ultimate fighting" things (rather hilariously titled "Man Slamming with Straight Dave" ) where it's deemed more acceptable for men to beat each other to a pulp in a display of barely suppressed Homoeroticism, than it is for two men to share an intimate moment with each other, this is probably where the film is at its best and the closest it comes to making a real and valid point about American culture; Bruno's "Celeb TV" show is also very funny.....

So, it's a real hit and miss affair... When it it hits, it does so pretty well, but where it misses, it just shoots blindly and stupidly and ends up placing our sympathies with the people he's supposed to be taking the p1ss out of..... So, it gets a 5/10 from me, because of that and because of the fact that it is just basically a gay version of Borat.....

Going to see this tomorrow night.

I think I'm excited about seeing it lol. Part of me is cringing at the thought of it though! Going to be an experience!

OMG that was so much better than I imagined! I think it helped that I hadnt seen Borat, so I wasnt judging it on that or seeing the similiarities like you mentioned Grimly.

I've never been to cinema where people laughed so much!

Moments of pure nervous laughter seeing how everyone else was reacting :heehee:

I could go watch it again right now :D

aye i've never seen a film where everyone else in the cinema is laughing so much!

i'm not that easily shocked but that talking willy shocked me! and the ending was pretty unexpected too!

Oo an edited version -

UK cinema-goers are to be presented with two alternative versions of hit comedy film Bruno from Friday, 24 July.

A 15-rated edit of the movie will be distributed alongside the original cut, which has an 18 certificate.

It is the first time alternate versions of a film have been released in the UK at the same time.

Universal Pictures said it had re-cut the film after cinemas reported turning away large numbers of teenagers during the opening weekend.

Only 1 minute 50 seconds had been lost from the original, it said.

LOL 1min 50 seconds cut :heehee: No prizes for guessing which bits :kink:

I think it helped that I hadnt seen Borat, so I wasnt judging it on that or seeing the similiarities like you mentioned Grimly.

Ah, yeah, to be fair, that probably does help... I couldn't help but judge it on Borat terms, structurally speaking, the films are practically the same..... And, I did honestly think that Borat was a lot funnier and hits the target more..... I dont think Bruno is really as good a character as Borat, Bruno seems a bit one-note as a character tbh......

Grimly, is it true that Bono is in this film?

I doubt I'll bother seeing it going by what you said. Borat wasnt really to my taste, although parts were very funny.

i'm not sure which version i watched then? some bits were blacked out but they still showed a dancing and talking willy!

Oh you saw the 18 version.

The new 15 version will be released on Friday July 24.

It basically looses the gay sex montage, the medium scene and the swingers scenes I believe.

Hmmm, I just saw this and I wasn't really impressed. It was very much like Borat except it wasn't as funny or as original, since it seemed to follow the same basic plot.

The character of Bruno wasn't as funny as Borat either, infact I don't think he came anywhere near. It did have some shocking moments though and some really cringey moments which all in all were quite amusing. I don't think I'm going to forget the scene with Milli Vanilli's ghost out of my head for a while!

^ That was the most hilarious cringey scene of them all.

All the straight city guys at the screening I went to tonight were squirming lol. I find their reaction funnier :heehee:
