Why not?

Been talking to someone who was front row in Barcelona and decided to move a bit further back after a few songs

The main stage is very high...that wouldn't be to bad if the band would be at the front of thew stage most of the time...but there's a lot happening...stage turning....band members walking around and stuff like that....so...'ve been told I would have a far better view of all that's happening if I'M NOT at front row :o

Here's a pic from inside the circle...it shows how high the main stage is and how the bridges (is that what you call them?) are much lower!!!!

Now that's why I thought this might be a better spot:

And this one might be just perfect....gives you a great overview of all that's happening and doesn't make you turn around all the time

It’s heaven for Glasvegas

It was never really in doubt, but yesterday Glasvegas cemented their reputation as Scotland's best new band by earning a place on the shortlist for the 2009 Barclaycard Mercury Prize.

The line-up of 12 albums - chosen from all UK and Irish releases from July 2008 to July 2009 - was announced in London by radio and television starlet Lauren Laverne, and sees Glasvegas fighting it out with the likes of Kasabian, The Horrors and Florence And The Machine for the most prestigious award on the UK music calendar. The winner, following on from Elbow's triumph in 2008 with The Seldom Seen Kid, will be announced at a glitzy ceremony on September 8.

"I guess there's no point in patronising anyone," says lead singer and songwriter James Allan. "I expected us to skoosh it, for it to happen with this band. I'm not surprised we got the nomination because I know the miles I've walked making this album, I know the highs and lows. I was down on my knees at the end of it all. I know it sounds arrogant, but we all know our own struggles."

Given that Allan was a professional footballer earlier in his life, he's better prepared than most to score a hat-trick for Scottish bands on the Mercury playing field. Primal Scream won the award with Screamadelica in its inaugural year of 1992, while Franz Ferdinand's debut album took the prize in 2004.

Other than that, Scottish musicians haven't exactly dominated the competition. The Jesus And Mary Chain were also in contention in 1992 with Honey's Dead, but it was three years before another Scot - composer James MacMillan - featured on the line-up with Seven Last Words From The Cross.

Primal Scream were in the running in 1997 with Vanishing Point, but only The Delgados and Helicopter Girl (2000), Belle & Sebastian and Snow Patrol (2004), KT Tunstall (2005), Isobel Campbell (2006) and The View (2007) have earned nominations since then.

This year, 260 albums were considered by the judging panel, chaired by rock critic and academic Simon Frith. What's remarkable about the selection is the number of debut albums - Glasvegas included - that have made it to the final dozen.

"That's one of the things that's cool about the Mercury Prize," adds Allan. "Normally awards, like the Brits, are built upon units of records shifted. The Mercury is a bit more alternative compared to the others. And it's one of the first we're up for that's not done by the public or online, where you could get your mum and your record label up all night voting."

Glasvegas may be first-timers but they're also front-runners. Joining them and chart-topper La Roux among the newcomers are Florence And The Machine, Friendly Fires, rapper Speech Debelle, Irish singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan and leftfield trio The Invisible.

Although more established, none of the others on the shortlist could be considered as veterans. Bat For Lashes, The Horrors and Sweet Billy Pilgrim are only on their second album, while Kasabian and punkish jazz quintet Led Beb have notched up three apiece.

"I'm glad to see Florence And The Machine and Friendly Fires on the list, and Kasabian too," continues Allan, "but that's because I'm biased as they're friends of ours and I remember the good times we've shared on tour. It's natural that you want the people you're familiar with to do well."

Glasvegas's bittersweet collision of 1960s pop melodies and harsh distorted guitars peaked at number two in the album charts last September, kept off the top spot by Metallica. The album - featuring fan favourites Daddy's Gone, Go Square Go and Geraldine - also soared on many end-of-year critics' lists.

In the past month, the band played to their biggest UK crowds yet at Glastonbury and T in the Park, while five successive tours across the Atlantic in under a year have seen them make serious inroads into the American market. On August 18, they'll support U2 at Hampden Park, a gig that's bound to be the jewel in the Mercury Prize nomination's crown.

"To be honest, my mind is always just on writing songs, making albums and being in the band," says Allan. "Recognition is nice but you've got to have a personal agenda right from the start, and making records is why we're here. As for the gig at Hampden Park with U2, well, I'm a big fan of the Righteous Brothers, and I believe that Bono is the best white soul singer since Bobby Hatfield. If I can't share the stage with Bobby Hatfield, then I'll do it with Bono."
