Posted June 6, 200916 yr Is it me, or is "The Promise" the cause of GA's decline with their follow-ups "The Lovin Kind" and "Untouchable"? It's as if retarded radio stations want to play such an average and awful song and it seems the masses prefer such a bad song. How it won Best British Single. I'd love to know. "Call The Shots" should have been the receipient instead. It makes me mad "Untouchable" failed.
June 6, 200916 yr "and average and awful song" ... we clearly haven't listened to the same song. It's a brillant and infectious pop song, and different to everything they've done before. I LOVE it to bits, and it's one of the songs I still enjoy the most on the album. "The loving kind" suffered from being released too short after "The Promise", while it was still very popular, and they haven't promoted it on TV at all (only one GTMV performance 1 month prior the release or so). And anyway the public just didn't click with it, even though it reached #1 on radio airplays (so you can't say it was overshadowed on radios by "The promise" at that time) "Untouchable" suffered from the album selling SO well already and from a total lack of promotion again.
June 6, 200916 yr i love the promise it did graet things for the album which you musnt forget and a big selling album does hamper single sales but the loving kind in sales terms did very very well and sold better than some of their number 6 singles and untouchable didnt fail it made #11 which is decent and again it has outsold some of their top 10 hits so my answer to the question is NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
June 7, 200916 yr The Promise is a great song! :D I have to agree with the others, it did amazing things for album sales not to mention the tour! The reason TLK and U didn't do so well is due to the huge sales of OOC and also the continuing airplay of TP, but more importantly the stupid lack of promo!
June 7, 200916 yr I hate the promise its my least favourite of GA's singles but I dont think it did anything but improve their career it was huge for them, TLK lacked promotion and was released whilst the promise was still big, as for Untouchable that seemed to be released really late after TLK, had little promotion, IMO wasn't the best choice and was released on a ver competitive week.
June 7, 200916 yr the promise cannot be blamed for the other singles doing good or bad really as a song will sell on merit aswell as fan base but the follow ups did so well so there is no problem, the promise also saw girls aloud win their brit award which is something they have wanted so it in my opinion it would be unfair to say it didnt help their career plus ithe promise played a big part in the huge success of the album selling so well and selling so well in its opening week to reach number 1.
June 7, 200916 yr Without sounding all fanboyish, there is a simple, logical reason why the follow-up singles didn't do as well = the album sold loads. No other GA album has ever sold that much before the 2nd single, hence the "decline" in performance. If anything 'The Promise' is the highlight of their career, not the virus.
June 8, 200916 yr Its not one of my favourite singles of theirs but if anything I think its done a lot for them. It'll definitely be the most remembered song from this era.
June 8, 200916 yr I think it actually helped their career. The reason TLK and Untouchable didn't do well is because everyone already had the album. Edited June 8, 200916 yr by Aidan
June 8, 200916 yr The Promise didnt do anything to screw TLK and Untouchabe out of a good chart position, as its already been said the high album sales and the lack of promotion are what did it. The girls have always relied on promotion to help sell their singles and until this era they did mulitple performances and interviews on different shows for each single released. TLK and Untouchable only got one performance each and regardless of how 'high profile' it is, it's not enough.
June 8, 200916 yr I think this thread is just pointless. We all know that "The Promise" made Girls Aloud the most successful girl group and that they just chose 2 slower songs as follow-ups, whereas I would've chosen "Untouchable" then a more upbeat song ie "Rolling Back The Rivers..."
June 10, 200916 yr i think the loving kind was a great follow top to the promise and if the album had its time again i would still go in order that they did with the first 2 singles
June 10, 200916 yr The promise, is one of Girls Alouds best songs in their history. I think the follow-up singles didnt do as well due to the face the album had already performed well.
June 10, 200916 yr ye sthe high album sales affacted the sales of the 2nd and 3rd single but again they still sold very well especially the loving kind
June 10, 200916 yr if the virus is called 'success' then yes :P I mean their biggest sell out arena tour to date. Highest selling studio album. A BRIT award. Anyone with the huge sales and no promotion would struggle to make even top 20 with 2nd and 3rd singles. So to make #10 and #11 is amazing considering! Plus it stops us all now being psycho over the top 10 record. It is already their's and I doubt it will be beaten for many years now.
June 10, 200916 yr i agree completly plys take u2 for example the new album has sold less than laf of girls aloud and the 2nd single of the new U2 album only made number 42... so i think a 3rd single making number 11 for girls aloud that has sold three quarters of a million is nothing bad at all
