Over all this chart was pretty well presented, and Rich and Kat did their research well. Although the Chart was a travesty. Starting at 4pm, by playing the full week`s sales top 10 from iTunes...then kidding us, it had changed no end by 5 O`Clock. It hadn`t really because at 5, they started to refer to the Live hourly iTunes Top 10.

Even more confusing Paparazzi had appeared at 21, then miraculously moved into the top 10, by 6pm. Where as Kasabian had disappeared altogether with "Fire". They missed out 4 songs, but did get 36 into 115 minutes. We were all confused, and it made our heads spin! What a total made up chart it turned out to be! They answered an email concerning Kasabian, by saying that they were at 11, with everything else moving down a place. This is nonsense in itself, because 11 - 40 based on Airplay/iTunes sales, and the combination would not have put Kasabian at #11. They would have appeared somewhere between 13 & 21. Complete Rubbish.

What???

It's a shame because in theory it is a really good idea, having a chart so very up to date, because Richard Park did make a valid point about the official chart being out of date very quickly.

But this chart just sounds like a shambles!! It's like a bunch of kids making their own little chart on the back on their homework diary or something...with the airplay element, and the switching between downloads from the entire week and real-time data, it is just random! And the fooling listeners into thinking their is actually some coherence to the whole thing or that they are actually having an effect on it just makes it all a bit of a joke.

The problem is, the same flaw will exist next week and every week after that until this is thought through. A single in the top 10 of the top 40 sales and airplay based chart at 4pm that isn't in the top 10 of the live iTunes chart at 4pm is just going to vanish from the entire chart until someone at the Big Top 40 can think of where to place it, which will always be after the chart has been counted down.

Example: if, on the weekly based chart Soulja Boy holds at #10 but then falls to, say, number 11 on the iTunes chart at 4pm next Sunday, it will only appear in the initial top 10 chart counted down at 4pm to 4.30pm. It won't appear in the chart that counts down 40 to 11 (obviously as it is at #10 in that chart) but when the final top 10 is counted down from 6.10pm onwards it won't be in that chart either. The top 40 published on the website is an amalgamation of 40-11 of the weekly iTune sales and airplay chart and the top 10 records in the current iTunes chart at 4pm.

Another scenario is that a record could enter the weekly iTunes and airplay chart inside the top 10 but not be in the 4pm iTunes top 10 chart - it could be at #11 in that chart for example. Because it's not in the top 10 of the iTunes chart at 4pm It won't be given a chart place in the chart that appears at the website. It will, in effect, have failed to chart - yet would be a new entry on the OCC chart, quite possibly inside the top 10 of that chart.

I am TOTALLY confused

I'm trying to understand what they play and when, so maybe someone can clarify for me:

  • Part 1 - Top 10 - based on iTunes sales data for the whole week.
  • Part 2 - Top 40 to 11 - based on iTunes sales data for the whole week plus (commercial radio?) airplay.
  • Part 3 - Top 10 - based on "live" iTunes sales data at that point in time, which could be anywhere from sales over the last hour, to sales over the last 48/72 hours, which matches the iTunes chart we're used to looking at.

If my understanding of "The Big Top 40" is correct, then for Part 3, the questions are:

  • When is the Top 10 locked?

    - Is it really 5pm or 6pm, or was it locked before the show even started.

  • What time period is the Top 10 based on?

    - Is it the last hour, 24 hours, or the standard 48/72 hours.

If they could be honest about it, I think it could make for an interesting rundown, if altogether entirely useless. It's essentially 3 different charts played over the course of 3 hours

It's like they got together an thought how can we make the chart on network radio even more pointless than it already was. At least the rule preventing the 'network chart' havin a different number 1 to the official chart has been dropped for the first time since July 1993. If they did a very quick (half hour or hour) run thru of current standings on a saturday or even a sunday morning an then came back with the one changed chart for the main show it could work better but this i suspect would require an extra licence from the OCC and maybe would invalidate the Beebs. If it gets the youngsters listenin an buyin then i suppose it could be a gd thing.

Actually speakin jus now of the old network chart havin different number 1s, does anyone have a list of the charttoppers and/or the cduk ones?

The Independant Radio people can do what they like now, because The Big Top 40 is nothing to do with the OCC, in any way.

There is a thread on Network Chart #1s (MRIB), in the Chart Reference Library somewhere. It was started in October 2007, if you can find it!

I understand that this chart has replaced Hit40Uk...but on The Box they are currently playing Hit40Uk top 40, and it seems like it would be the chart that would have been played on Sunday...number 40 is a new entry, Cascada - Evacuate The Dancefloor, 39 is a re-entry Alesha Dixon - Breathe Slow...I thought this chart had finished. This is definintly not The Big40Chart as numbers 40 and 39 are different.

It is still possible to run Hit40uk. Even though it`s been dropped.

Do us a favour Jakey, post it up here. I haven`t got access to it at the moment.

I see what`s happening now...The Music Channels that take the show have used the Official Top 10 sales, and used the Airplay (of the channels that take it), for the 11 - 40. So it wouldn`t have been the same as the old radio show. Lethal Bizzle wouldn`t have been in the Radio Show! Actually that make`s it a better chart!

That's clever. It thinks all of my local stations are in London (I live in the North East). Anyway, the Hit 40 just looks stupid now, I'm glad they changed it. I mean, Lethal Bizzle?!
