The original Welsh Elvis (before Shakin' Stevens!) became one of the most popular vocalists to emerge from the British Invasion of the 1960s and is still a musical force today.

Were any of you fans of the former miner from Pontypridd, Mid Glamorgan or did you find his Robbie Williams' dad posteuring off putting?

To be honest I never really liked him much, although I admit he is a reasonable singer with some good songs in the 60's, but I preferred him to Humperdink. I think my mother liked him, :D, I think he was more liked by the female population rather than the male. Seems to have reinvented himself a bit in the 2000's and he is now having some more popularity and still has a great voice, puts a lot of today's singers to shame, no names.

he must have been the archytypal 'medalion man', a total sleaze .... but .... he has got a great voice and could execute ballads brilliantly (take note westlife etc). i reckon though that IF he had gone into rock, he would have been one of the greatest ever rock vocalists ... an opportunity missed?
I find the man grotesque and insipid. How anyone think he's acceptable in 2009 is beyond me!
He can't be all that bad, since he has the ability to blow out speakers with the power of his voice....I like the stuff he put out in the 60's and early 70's nore than his later stuff, although, I do like his cover of Price's 'Kiss' done with Art of Noise....

That cover of Prince is one of the worst cover versions of all time. Takes a funky classic and covers it in porridge.

Jones just reminds me of a water buffalo with the finesse of one too.

Blowing out speakers just means he is the Brian Blessed of pop.

"Gordon's alive!!!!???"

So do I.

Which probably explains why I like Tom Jones when my "music snob" brain tells me I shouldn't.

Back in the early days he could rock.....

Tom Jones - Chills and Fever (1964)

But then again back then he had Jimmy Page (later Yardbirds, then Led Zeppelin) & in this clip (the next Dr Who lookalike, Matt Smith) Chris Slade (later Manfred Mann's Earth Band & AC\DC) in his backing band.

Yes, he is impressive, a fantastic singer and lastly great performer.
