Though these could finish up in any order by next Sunday, infact every entry by him. Other entries in the top 50 include Lily Allen (stuck at 31), Killswitch Engage, Ali Campbell, Lenka, Freemasons, Jackie Summer Special (VA), and Moby. And back up for Gaslight Anthems (who have a new single out). Last week we got 23 in the 30 on the albums, and 9 in the 10, 18 in the 20, 24 in the 30 on the singles...this poor show was due to you know who. Back in July 1982, Radio Luxembourg came up with this: (As presented by Tony Prince on Tuesday 29th June 1982) 01 04 HAPPY TALK - CAPTAIN SENSIBLE 02 14 MUSIC AND LIGHTS - IMAGINATION 03 NE JUST WHO IS THE 5 O`CLOCK HERO - THE JAM 04 03 ABRACADABRA - STEVE MILLER BAND 05 01 INSIDE OUT - ODYSSEY 06 11 BEATLES MOVIE MEDLEY - BEATLES 07 07 NO REGRETS - MIDGE URE 08 15 NOW THOSE DAYS ARE GONE - BUCK`S FIZZ 09 02 I`VE NEVER BEEN TO ME - CHARLENE 10 19 A NIGHT TO REMEMBER - SHALAMAR 11 24 MURPHY`S LAW - CHERI 12 NE FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK - AC/DC 13 NE TAKE IT AWAY - PAUL MCCARTNEY 14 09 IKO IKO - NATASHA 15 06 AVALON - ROXY MUSIC 16 20 HEART STOP BEATING IN TIME - LEO SAYER 17 06 DO I DO - STEVIE WONDER 18 13 I`M A WONDERFUL THING BABY - KID CREOLE 19 08 WORK THAT BODY - DIANA ROSS 20 23 VIDEOTEQUE - DOLLAR 21 16 TORCH - SOFT CELL 22 RE FREEBIRD - LYNYRD SKYNYRD 23 NE NIGHT TRAIN - VISAGE 24 12 I WANT CANDY - BOW WOW WOW 25 NE SHY BOY - BANANARAMA 26 NE FAME - IRENE CARA 27 25 LOOK OF LOVE - ABC 28 NE LOVE HAS FOUND IT`S WAY - DENIS BROWN 29 NE HEAT OF THE MOMENT - ASIA 30 NE DA DA DA - TRIO 27 in the 30 for Radio Luxembourg in 1982. Pretty good, but Denis Brown unfortunately flopped with "Love Has Found it`s way". This was a shame because Denis released hundreds of singles in Britain, but only "Money In My Pocket" was that successful in 1979. They were a few week`s early with Asia, but again they were not over successful on the Radio One Chart. Paul McCartney finding himself in the top 20 twice, as a medley rose in the top 10, and "Take It Away" shot in as a new entry, and got good airplay everywhere. It would have been quite amusing had Cheri cut a special UK version of "Murphy`s Law"...Can`t imagine "Sod`s Law" fitting though! The Jam were on import only, but managed to get up into the top 10. Spot the old song with a Lynyrd Skynrd circa 1976, Natasha covering the old negro "Iko Iko"...a hit in 1964 from the Dixie Cups. Midge Ure covered the Walker Brothers 1976 hit. Charlene originally cut "I`ve Never Been To Me" in 1976 too. She had quite a period of ill health, divorced, moved to East Hampstead and then finally got a hit. Fame was in it`s self an old song, as it came from the film version from 1980. The biggest old song, and surprise came as Captain Sensible (complete with parrott), covered "Happy Talk", a song featured in South Pacific over 2 decades before. We all eagerly waited for the good Captain to cover "I`m Gonna Wash That Man, Right Out Of My Hair!" Tom`s got the singles, and some Videos for us next...and we`ve chosen some "Picks to Click", for next week. Before that though, for way of change...Let`s have some "Pops To Flop"...3 Songs, sure to flop in coming weeks: There`s Pastels and "Unfair Kind Of Fame" (originally released in 1997, for this Scottish Indie outfit who formed in 1982). To which, we couldn`t find a clip of! Then there is Paul Child "Working Man 09" (the Brigend singer, who launched the album "After All These Years" at the Millenium Stadium on Saturday, at the British Speedway Grand Prix in front of 60,000 people). maXMj_8IPEc Also to flop, will be 3OH!3 "Don`t Trust Me" (the Hip-Hop Colarado based Outfit, are they just too American?) FlTE5j7aEf0 Go on Tom, What`s happening on the singles front?
June 27, 200916 yr Thanks Dave! Here is what we expect the top 30 singles to look like next sunday... Some Bubblers first: 50 36 15 MINUTES - YEAH YOUS 49 RE BAD - MICHAEL JACKSON 47 44 BE THE ONE - JACK PENATE 44 RE DON`T STOP `TILL YOU GET ENOUGH - MICHAEL JACKSON 42 RE I GOTTA BE - BLACK EYED PEAS 40 RE I WANT YOU BACK - JACKSON FIVE 37 RE THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL - MICHAEL JACKSON 36 RE YOU ARE NOT ALONE - MICHAEL JACKSON 35 NE I KNOW YOU WANT ME - PITBULL 33 40 NEVER FORGET YOU - NOISETTES 31 RE THRILLER - MICHAEL JACKSON 30 RE EARTH SONG - MICHAEL JACKSON 29 RE BLACK OR WHITE - MICHAEL JACKSON 28 21 NEW DIVIDE - LINKIN PARK 27 RE DIRTY DIANA - MICHAEL JACKSON 26 RE BEAT IT - MICHAEL JACKSON 25 16 KISS ME THRU THE PHONE - SOULJA BOY 24 27 RAINDROPS - BASEMENT JAXX 23 19 FIRE - KASABIAN 22 12 NUMBER ONE - TINCHY/N-DUBZ 21 17 HUSH HUSH - PUSSYCAT DOLLS 20 18 IN FOR THE KILL - LA ROUX 19 NE STICKS AND STONES EP - JAMIE T 18 RE SMOOTHE CRIMINAL - MICHAEL JACKSON 17 RE BILLIE JEAN - MICHAEL JACKSON 16 13 BATTLEFIELD - JORDIN SPARKS 15 10 HEARTBREAK MAKE ME A DANCER - FREEMASONS 14 14 RABBIT HEART - FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE 13 32 WORK - SATURDAYS 12 11 UNTOUCHED - VERONICAS 11 09 BONKERS - DIZZEE/ARMAND 10 08 RED - DANIEL MERRIWEATHER 09 04 MAMA DO - PIXIE LOTT 08 05 RELEASE ME - AGNES 07 06 KNOCK YOU DOWN - KERI AND CO 06 03 BOOM BOOM POW - BLACK EYED PEAS 05 07 PAPARAZZI - LADY GAGA 04 NE EVACUATE THE DANCEFLOOR - CASCADA 03 02 WHEN LOVE TAKES OVER - DAVID & KELLY 02 01 BULLETPROOF - LA ROUX 01 RE MAN IN THE MIRROR - MICHAEL JACKSON Well, as could be expected, the utimely passing of Michael Jackson has reactivated a lot of his classic hits! But who could have predicted 8 in the top 30, plus one in the top 40 from the Jackson Five? 11 in the 40 altogether, and 13 in the 50. In fact, that did not even happen with Elvis! The official tribute single featuring many US R&B artists just premiered on radio too, though whether it will be rush-released to compete with the runners and riders next week is unknown. But Michael looks like having next week's number one in the bag with this classic that originally peaked at a lowly 21. Tough break for La Roux, who loses her hold at number one, but it doesn't seem to be slowing Lady Gaga who gets her third top 5 hit. Apart from that, the only noticeable newie is Cascada's Gaga-aping Evacuate The Dancefloor, as we predicted for top 10 last week :) Bubbling under at 34, is a song that we're likely to be hearing a lot of this summer. It's Pitbull with the spanglish dance track I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho). Could it be the new Ketchup Song? So what's the week after next's chart shaping up like? Well here are some Picks To Click which will surely be in the shakeup come Sunday 12th July: Chipmunk - Diamond Rings (the follow-up to the massive flop Chip Diddy Chip... more grime here than you can shake a stick at, where's my Cillit Bang gone?) -IB2ataUX-A JLS - Beat Again (X Factor losers with a highly polishesd American sounding debut single, with high number one ptential... Anyone remember MN8?) og07i_Qwwp0 VV Brown - Shark In The Water (Sound Of 2009-er hoping that she can do a La Roux and not a Little Boots next week... the summery groove and earworm quality should help) wRXhs-_SVwo Got anything more to add, Dave? ;)
June 29, 200916 yr Author I reckon that VV Brown will be in the top 10, on the 12th July...without fail, and overtake GaGa.
June 29, 200916 yr Author 3OH!3 aren't released till next week accoring to the New Release Schedule I didn`t give the dates, Jakey...I just said in "coming weeks!" It is released on 6th.
June 29, 200916 yr Interesting, but I expected Michael Jackson ales to start to fall as the week progresses, hence I don't think he singles will be as successful as you are predicting/projecting. However I hope Man In The Mirror reaches UK#1; at least it sounds less dated than the current #1.
June 29, 200916 yr My interest in the Michael Jackson tracks is beginning to wane a bit, at this rate there will be a dozen of them come next Sunday, I don't mind a couple, but its filling up a bit now.
July 1, 200916 yr Thank you Dave! Your work is highly appreciated. To tell the truth i'm not a big fun of recent charts. However i'm dead nuts on the older ones. I love your Radio Luxembough weekly flashback issues. It's not only that they are interested for their officially non-charted singles (though it's very interesting indeed). Radio Luxembough has been a very special stuff for me in the late 80's. That was Radio 208 where i've started to listen to UK Top 20 charts. It was October 1986. I had my wireless damaged at the time and i ask a friend of mine to lend me one especially for the TOP20 Chart show. The signal recept was awful, but still i recorded the show to my reel-to-reel tape recorder. I'd listen to it the whole week through. I still remember the voices of Mike Hollis, Bob Stewart, Shaun Tilley just like it was yesterday. Is there any chance to see those charts in a separate thread listed week-by-week completed with your wonderful commentaries and Chart trivia? That would a fantastic thread!
