I was listening to her debut the other week and this one just lept out at me which it didn't do on the first listen. (I love it when that happens!) It's, understandably, quite dated now but it's been nearly 20 years and I think it still stands up well compared to her other material. I feel that her vocals aren't quite mature on this, and would have sounded better a few albums later but I love the combination of singing and 'rap'. The song and the vocals are quite 'empowering'. Should have been a single over the others, apart from "Vision Of Love".

My favourite bit is:

"You can't do that. I'm not a doormat. You're just a player. That's not my format...haha see ya."

Share the love.

Thank GOD somebody else loves this!

I went through a phase of loving it ages ago when I first bought the MC album, I actually thinkg (not being a fan of Vision Of Love personally...) that Prisoner is the best track on the album, I reckon it would have been a smash for her. It's a shame that the track wasn't held back and later used on Butterfly or something (obviously being re-worked a bit since the album was 8 years later.. :P ) it would have been quite apt. Love it nonetheless, her vocals are absolutely flawless, it shows how powerful her voice really is. Although it saddens me to think that she might suffer cardiac arrest if someone told her to sing it live today. :(

Yeah, it's definitely up there with the best on it. Probably only second to "Vision Of Love" to me, but I've known that a lot longer. It is quite apt in retrospect, almost like she could see the future. :heehee:

I'd love to hear this done live when she was at her peak, it obviously wouldn't work now, as you said. :(

I really like this! Kelly sent it to me when I was first getting into Mariah in a big way and it's one of my favourite post-breakup type songs now along with 'Fighter' by Xtina and 'Stronger' by Britney :P

Taken from my review thread of the album. :D

Prisoner

Fast start. Very novel track here with some MCing in the beginning of this track. Perhaps this should have been released as it is more of an upbeat track with the point stated above. The one point against this would be the speed of the verses. It would be difficult to fully appreciate this song on its own. I remember thinking this when I first heard this. More of a Double A Side possibility had it been considered at the time. More MCing near the end of this track.
