Norma

Aside from some great dance music, in my opinion 1999 was a terrible year full of really yucky tenny-bopper rubbish like Vengaboys, S Club 7, Westlife etc etc...

And OH MY GOD!! What a tragic top ten! What RUBBISH!

right, enough of this jacko bollox, lets get back to retroland

well theres abit of variety, lots of kiddy pop, some uk garage, some cool tracks, some dance.

That must surely rank as one of the most embarrassing top 10s of all-time.... positively vile, every single track.

And only 3 tracks worthy of a mention in the whole list - Suede, TLC and the Chemical Brothers - otherwise truly abysmal.

Add Coffee + TV and that's about right.

one of my least favourite Blur moments, that one.... :(

one of my least favourite Blur moments, that one.... :(

Well compared to some of their other songs, it is a bit lightweight but still... it's Blur.

But then I'm probably one of the only people who really rates Music is My Radar.

Classic #1. Although I dont think this is a real chart, was it? Dont recall Gouryella being #16 at some point.

Anyway, brilliant year for trance, a genre for the real fans of quality dance music.

This should be fun as I hated music from the charts in the late 90's, so let's see.....

1 ATB - 9pm (Till I Come)......Never heard it, but I bet its crap

2 Ricky Martin - Livin' La Vida Loca  Donkey on Shrek does a good version of this I think

3 Will Smith featuring Dru Hill - Wild Wild West :puke2:

4 The Vengaboys - Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!....utter garbage

5 Whitney Houston - My Love Is Your Love :puke2:

6 S Club 7 - Bring It All Back :puke2:

11 Madonna - Beautiful Stranger....not her best

30 The Three Amigos - Louie, Louie :puke2:

31 Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way :puke2:

32 The Chemical Brothers - Hey Boy Hey Girl :)

33 Yomanda - Synth And Strings :puke2:

34 Gomez - Bring It On :puke2:

36 Gary Barlow - Stronger :puke2:

37 Ma$e - Get Ready :puke2:

38 TLC - No Scrubs :puke2:

39 Suede - She's In Fashion....a classic song, lost in this absolute shyte chart

40 Chicane featuring Maire Brennan - Saltwater

Well that was one of the worse excuses for a top 40 I have ever commented on

I love dance music... but this chart really showed that it was only dance music for the mentally challenged that made it into the charts at this point... yikes.... TERRIBLE selection of Eurocheese and NAFF awful awful awful 'dance' acts in this chart.

And that number one..... surely one of the most awful records ever made (even worse than Castles in the Sky... but only just).

gouryella peaked at 15 according to the bible of pop, the guiness book.

i posted up this chart on a whim, hoping for some great dance tracks..... i was wrong! i agree, the dance reprisentitives in this chart are very poor with the exception of chicane.

Spot on..... It was thanks to that sort of sh1te that I kind of went "deep underground" to listen to the decent, challenging Dance/Techno stuff.... "Trance" had just become so much bollocks by this point it was unbearable..... Apart from stuff like Binary Finary, this was music for 12 year old car thieves.....

Oh is this another "my sub-generation did it better" argument??

NEXT!!!

It's true, though, Scottyem... by 99.... trance was just awful... all the labels and clubs that released the real trance classics were either going bust or had changed musical direction, and the 2nd breed of trance was just a watered down, cheesier embarrassment.

Not a generation thing.... just a change of direction that effectively killed a genre.

......... or improved it.... i prefered uplifting/anthemic trance to the progressive house type that preceeded it. and no im not talking about atb, ian van dahl, alice dee jay, dj jean, darude, .

i dont call binary finery, veracocha, push, agnelli & nelson, solar stone, and the hundereds of other examples given on the previous thread 'watered down & cheesy'.

.... and how can the earlier form, 'real trance' be going bust? if it was that good it would still be selling, albeit in lesser amounts?

Oh is this another "my sub-generation did it better" argument??

Actually open your ears and listen to stuff like KLF, The Shamen, FSOL, etc and then tell me that the likes of ATB, Ian Van Dahl, etc doesn't suck cock.....

.... but this is where you are WRONG, in assuming that we are sticking up for that pop/dance stuff. thats what you and russ appear to be doing, just where have either i or scotty held up ian van dahl or atb as examples of trance? i LOVE klf and the shamen, but would never consider them trance, they were by all accounts 'progressive house', even though the klf first coined the phrase.

ill close this thread if its going to deteriorate into another petty slanging match as we have covered this topic recently.
