Posted July 9, 200916 yr As many realise the sales of singles are on the increase again, but how much is it increasing really? Well I decided to make a graph with a moving average for #1 sales to take a look. Here is the results. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/predicta/BuzzJack/SalesTrend.jpg As you can see sales this year are easily higher then the previous two years. The general average for 2009 so far is a whopping 75% up on 2008. :cheer: Edited July 9, 200916 yr by Ricky
July 9, 200916 yr Its great that avaerage singles sales are higher and i hope they continue to grow,i love when singles sell big and they are steadily growing again which is great news as it helps make the singles chart a little bit more important.
July 9, 200916 yr Funny, I just did something similar :D Not as pretty as yours but with data from 1995 on: http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/8599/salesuk.th.jpg This is a moving 52-weeks-average. The high values at the left are caused by Candle In The Wind 1997. The second graph is basically the same, but I removed the 3 highest and lowest values of each year. http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/6929/salesuk2.th.jpg I know we have the weekly #1 sales archived in the forum, but is there a source for the weekly total market sales (singles/albums)? This would be even more interesting as it would show the rise of the singles market more precisely... ^_^ Edited July 9, 200916 yr by AshDeluxe
July 10, 200916 yr You can see the 'X Factor effect' on that top graph for 2007 and 2008. At the end of each year, the sales go up as the previous years winner goes to no.1, then theres a low before that years winners goes to no.1!
July 10, 200916 yr 2007 from week 29 to about 36 is low because of lack of releases? I know Rihanna - Umbrella was dominating for 10 weeks but sales are always between 25-35k.

July 10, 200916 yr Author Oh, Robyn made #1 with less than 30k. :o Well Rihanna did, not Robyn. I posted averages(by mistake) you then quoted, updated post now for actual #1 sales. Edited July 10, 200916 yr by Ricky
July 10, 200916 yr Then only 2 big releases at that time (when talking about to hit 30k). Timbaland and Robyn. Edited July 10, 200916 yr by FM11
July 11, 200916 yr You can see the 'X Factor effect' on that top graph for 2007 and 2008. At the end of each year, the sales go up as the previous years winner goes to no.1, then theres a low before that years winners goes to no.1! Thats not completely true. Yes, in 2007 Leona Lewis got to #1 with her second single, but she remains the only X factor winner (or contestant) to get two or more #1 singles. In 2008 Leon Jackson failed to get #1 with his next single (peaking at #3).. the X factor charity song "hero" is responsible for the rise.
