Following on from 1999's retro thread and umpteen pages later... So, according to legend, the early 1990s was when trance was in it's prime. We'll leave our opinions at the door on this topic and list off our top ten dance tracks of these micro-genres of dance. Think less Black Box and the other happy smiley italio dance music that was around at this sort of time-ish and think more KLF, The Shamen, Liquid, Altern-8, Orbital.

Sorry if the theme is as clear as mud, but make it your chance to exploit the vast choice on offer. Some of you were lucky enough to be there, others simply have to disocover them retrospectively. I'll post mine later, it's late and I'm too tired to think for now... ;)

Nice choices, though I wasn't much of a fan of Orbital. I do like "The Box" though.

Oooo I think I will add to this. God love acid house! In no order

Adamski - Killer

K-Klass - rhythm is a mystery

808 state - Pacific State

A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray

Prodigy - Out of space

Brothers In Rhythm - Such A Good Feeling

Tall Paul - Rock da house

USURA - Open Your Mind

Felix - Don't You Want Me

Jinny - Keep warm

I really wanted to put 2 Unlimited - No Limit just for the cheese.

None of these songs I remember from original release due to barely being born, all were discovered from about 2004 onwards:

Prodigy - Out of Space

KLF - America (What Time Is Love)

The JAMMs - It's Grim Up North

Bizarre Inc - Such A Feeling

808 State - Pacific State

Opus III - It's A Fine Day

Bizarre Inc - Playing With Knives

T99 - Anasthasia

LFO - LFO

Praga Khan - Injected With A Poison

Sometimes I really wish I'd have been born a couple of decades earlier..

I was 14 when rave took off and still too young to go to raves when the Tories brought in the feckin' CJB.

Anyways...10 is gonna be very hard to come up with....

Urban Shakedown - Some Justice

Power Pill - Pacman

Sonz of a Loop Da Loop Era - Far Out

Bizarre Inc - Playing With Knives

N-Joi - Anthem

Tricky Disco - Tricky Disco

KLF - What Time is Love?

Orbital - Chime

D'Cruze - World Within a World

Skin Up - Blockbuster

...will do for a start!

Nah, they just did Dance in a kind of "Rock" way..... They coined the term "Stadium Techno" when they were doing "America - What Time is Love....."

I dont understand why it was assumed that to do "Dance" or "Techno" you had to be some kind of baldy, faceless, anonymous "boffin"-type.... The KLF were just very strong personalities (same for The Prodigy), what's wrong with that....? Cant Dance Music have a strong personality then....?

........ or did they do 'rock' in a 'dance' way?

i guess that image suited the genre, abit like black leather/long hair did for rock.

Was more around the time of 'Last Train' as a video was released then called 'The Stadium House Trilogy' featuring WTIL, 3AME and LTTT.

Dunno if I agree with either of you though - the only "rock" in KLF's singles were the fake rock poses Bill and Jimmy would pull when they were miming along to the remixed versions of their tunes. As I've said exhaustively on retro in recent weeks, it was really the Beatmasters who put together their hits...and the Shamen's...in fact, I'm pretty sure both the KLF and Shamen won Brit Awards while the poor Beatmasters won nothing!

Some NICE choices, I've always meant to get hold of that infamous KLF album.

Anyway this is my definitive TEN!

Shades of Rhythm "Extacy"

The KLF "3am Eternal"

Carl Cox "I Want You (Forever)"

Lil Louis "French Kiss"

Dream Frequency "Feel So Real"

N'Joi "Anthem"

Bizarre Inc "Such A Feeling"

Isotonik "Different Strokes"

Together "Hardcore Uproar"

Joey Beltram "Energy Flash"

The list can stretch accross the globe!

well tbh my finger was not on the pulse in 1990, being mt least favourite year of all time and an upheaval in my personal life meant music was certainly on the back burner.

Oooh.....nice additions right there! We should really bung the whole lot together in a mix and upload it somewhere!

 were the cocteau twins early 90s?? I just got recommended them wow Aikea-Guinea is the most beautiful song such beautiful vocals.

I would put them there.

Cocteau Twins - Aikea Guinea

Cocteau Twins - Pearlydew drops drops

Where you getting that from Rich... I've checked, the production/writing credits on KLF's stuff is all Drummond/Cauty/KLF..... Beatmasters are nowhere....... You're talking about remixes mate.... Beatmasters did NOT write or produce the original versions of LTTT, What Time Is Love or 3 am Eternal...... And they certainly didn't do The JAMMS' "It's Grim Up North" in any respect.....

just a casual quick check shows no sign of klf here either

They remixed some of the hits for release. I'm full aware that the KLF wrote the originals, including the fantastic It's Grim Up North, but the version of What Time is Love at least that people are familiar with was remixed by the Beatmasters.

Actually, I've checked my old singles and The White Room LP and I'm starting to wonder if they did that much! Anyway...they DEFINITELY remixed The Shamen ;)
