I was just explaining the reason why Umbrella was actually charted. A data error for Tuesday mids made Umbrella be high.

So the iTunes chart has a data error that was consistently showing Umbrella to high in the iTunes chart all week and still remains consistent right now? Seems a bit far fetched if you ask me.

The explanation still doesn't seem to fit.

The above shows you can buy either single separately or together as a bundle.

The iTunes chart here shows 'JLS - Umbrella' as #23. This is clearly not from the sales of 'JLS - Beat again'. So the OCC is saying this is from sales of the bundle? If not then where does it come from? :???:

Here is Umbrella in the iTunes charts #31 this morning, this is likely the most common way it was bought with sales on the iPhone....so this doesn't count?

Well, the JLS EP isn't anywhere to be found on the iTunes Albums chart which is very odd given that it was Top 3 on pre-orders, so clearly something is up.

I didn't say an itunes error. But usually on Tuesdays some songs have two entries as different versions haven't been added. It seems that when people bought Umbrella after buying BA for the the Tuesday mids this gave 1 sale to BA and 1 sale to Umbrella when in fact those people have technically bought the EP as they'd have both of the songs so this counts as 1 sale to BA and that is what was submitted to the OCC and charted like that. As they would have purchased Umbrella separately on it's own it registers on itunes singles chart. The sales the Umbrella did get were the people who bought it but not BA.

For example this week if i bought Pixie Lott - Mama Do from the Mama Do -Single package, then decided to buy her version of Use Somebody but didn't press 'complete album' Use Somebody would end up on the itunes singles chart but actually i have purchased the whole 'album' so only counts as 1 sale to Mama Do.

But if i bought just Use Somebody that would count as 1 sales to Use Somebody. The reason who Use Somebody charted higher than Umbrella is because there is 2 versions of the song and the one that was selling the most wasn't the one packaged with US.

Steve, you're still misinterpreting what happened.

If an album has 10 tracks and someone chooses to buy the 10 tracks separately, then it counts as 10 separate tracks. It doesn't count as an album sale.

The OCC said that all that happened is that they had a total sale for Beat Again, a total sale for Umbrella, and a total sale for the digital bundle. Instead of adding the digital bundle sales to Beat Again, they added it to Umbrella by mistake. It's that simple.

The pre-orders were very high, so when the digital bundle sales were added to Umbrella, it looked like Umbrella was selling loads in the midweeks, when in reality it wasn't.

Whether it's an OCC error or iTunes error, we'll never know, but the fact that the EP is nowhere to be found in the iTunes Albums charts leads me to believe it could be an error at iTunes.

I think you've misunderstood.

Actually, I didn't.

We're not talking about it charting because someone bought the bundle.

We're talking about sales of the B-Side on its own. ie, some who hates the A-Side, ie "Beat Again", so just buys the B-Side, ie, "Umbrella".

So if 11,000 ppl bought the A-Side (Beat Again) on its own for 79p, and 10,000 bought the B-Side (Umbrella) on its own for 79p, the OCC says the B-Side can't chart because it is part of a bundle and doesn't qualify for the charts, no matter how many ppl buy it on its own.

That is why I said silly OCC

This is what I meant - if *just* Umbrella was bought from the digital bundle, then it would count towards the chart - but not if bought at the same time as Beat Again because bundled sales are supposed to be added to the A-side.

Yep, I agree with Steve's explanation - logical and explains why, although Umbrella charted high on iTunes, it was for all sales of Umbrella, and only those that were made by a person who didn't also buy Beat Again counted towards Umbrella's individual charting position of #107.

Thanks for the logic Steve :)

Wonder if Umbrella will nosedive out of the top 40 of the mids tomorrow due to something similar happening (e.g. if Umbrella only sold enough "single" copies to chart at #107 last week, and the majority of people who bought Umbrella also bought BA last week, then I can't see how that would drastically change this week - i.e. those who buy Umbrella this week are probably equally likely to also buy BA therefore discounting the Umbrella sale from the chart - therefore I'm surprised that Umbrella is even in the top 100). :o

to britster: but if the bundle sales were removed from Umbrella they weren't added to BA because there didn't seem to be a big enough jump of sales between Tuesday and Wednesday mids.
