New Seekers, R + B In The Mix, and R+ B Summer Anthems are too. Back up for Pink, in for Cornershop (Judy Sucks Lemons For Breakfast). Last week we had 9 in the ten, 18 in the 20, and 27 in the Combined top 30 albums. On the singles we got 10 in the 10, and just 1 out! 18 in the 20, 28 in the 30, 36 in the 40, and 47 in the 50. That`s where we begin to take our singles chart seriously then! Big Top 40 (who are they)?! By the way e-mail Big Top 40 he talks utter crap! I suggested he take Airplay out of the chart, and asked why they miss out the same songs every week...The answer came as "Independant Radio, could never do a Chart Show without Airplay, and we miss out the same songs each week, because our stations have not got them playlisted". What rot, he shot out! He then went on to say that they missed out airplay on the death of MJ, because it wouldn`t have been fair to include Airplay that week! Even more rot! He ended by suggesting that anyone not liking Big Top 40, should listen to Radio One (because apparently Radio play the complete top 40)...little does he know! Back in 1987, Radio Luxembourg came up with this, on the singles: 01 02 LA BAMBA - LOS LOBOS 02 01 WHO`S THAT GIRL - MADONNA 03 13 SHE`S ON IT - BEASTIE BOYS 04 04 ALONE - HEART 05 06 JUST DON`T WANT TO BE LONELY - FREDDIE MCGREGOR 06 09 JIVE TALKIN - BOOGIE BOX HIGH 07 03 ALWAYS - ATLANTIC STARR 08 08 A LITTLE BOOGIE WOOGIE IN THE BACK OF MY MIND - SHAKIN`STEVENS 09 07 I HEARD A RUMOUR - BANANARAMA 10 14 LABOUR OF LOVE - HUE AND CRY 11 23 I DIDN`T REALLY MEAN IT - LUTHER VANDROSS 12 19 OOPS UP SIDE YOUR HEAD - GAP BAND 13 05 IT`S A SIN - PET SHOP BOYS 14 29 YOU CAUGHT MY EYE - JUDY BOUCHER 15 15 SOLD - BOY GEORGE 16 NE TRUE FAITH - NEW ORDER 17 24 SUGAR MICE - MARILLION 18 11 UNDER THE BOARDWALK - BRUCE WILLIS 19 NE ANIMAL - DEF LEPPARD 20 10 F.L.M. - MEL AND KIM 21 21 I SURRENDER TO THE SPIRIT OF THE NIGHT - SAMANTHA FOX 22 NE PERSONAL TOUCH - ERROL BROWN 23 NE I JUST CAN`T STOP LOVING YOU - MICHAEL JACKSON 24 NE TOY BOY - SINITTA 25 NE ROADBLOCK - STOCK AITKEN AND WATERMAN 26 NE CALL ME - SPAGNA 27 NE GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS - MOTLEY CRUE 28 12 SWEETEST SMILE - BLACK 29 17 WISHING WELL - TERENCE TRENT DARBY 30 22 LIVING DAYLIGHTS - A-HA A good week at Radio Luxembourg in 1987...29 in the top 30! All be it, shortlived...as come the Autumn, the chart shrunk back to a top 20. A lot of re-makes in...Los Lobos covering a Richie Valens B side from 1959 (the other side of Donna). Boogie Box High was really George Michael covering the Bee Gees. Freddie McGregor covered a 1974 hit by The Main Ingredient. Shakin`Stevens covered a 1977 hit for Gary Glitter. Under The Boardwalk and Bruce Willis was a Drifters cover...the best version I reckon was the 1982 cover by the Tom Tom Club because it was different from the original. Both Heart and Atlantic Starr had been around since the 70s, and finally got hits in Britain in the 80s. The Beastie Boys were noisy as ever, and got at bit too high in the 208 chart. Hue And Cry should`ve been bigger. Every time I went to WhSmith in 1987, I heard the Luther Vandross current record...all over the air too. The Gap Band brought the rowing back, 7 years later. Did the Pet Shop Boys have their best year? I think so! Judy Boucher "Caught My Eye"...So, she threw it back at me! This was the follow up to "Can`t Be With You Tonight"...which peaked at #2, but I believe did get to #1 on The Chart Show. Boy George was drying up, after the re-make of "Everything I Own". "Sold" peaked at #15 on 208, but only made a paltry #24 on the Official Top 40. New Order took "True Faith" in to the chart on 2 occasions. Marillion were going the way of Boy George, it was nearly over. Def Leppard had (probably) their best hit. The late lamented Mel Appleby joining forces with sister Kim, got another top tenner "F.L.M." was Fun Love And Money. Samantha Fox was also drying up...Oh dear, heading towards the later Brits mess up, with Mick Fleetwood (some years after). Errol Brown snook away from Hot Chocolate, and gave it his "Personal Touch". He didn`t do it well enough, though! No video, for Jacko...and no number one featured on TOTP, for 2 weeks...Disgraceful! Sinitta had a "Toy Boy"...first featured on an edition of Quiz/Game Show "3-2-1" in 1987. Stock Aitken And Waterman issued their own "Roadblock"...Yes, Pete we saw "The Hit Man And Her" around this time! Spagna had the summer Euro anthem, unfortunately the Jackson man, kept her off the top. The Motley Crue probably haven`t been played since 1987. Black got their first miserable hit! Terence Trent Darby had his "Wishing Well", to kiss and tell...looking like a frog for most of the time, or was that Tasmin Archer?! A-ha had the current Bond theme...the 2nd with Timothy Dalton. Here are some Pops To Flop, ahead of this weeks Singles Preview. Absent Elk "Emily"...3rd single from Brighton based band: VV9W93IQBnY Third Degree "Mercy"...Duffy cover by Acid/Jazzy Brooklyn based band, sounding almost 60s stuff here: nl1o3da3eb8 Talons "The Pearl"...Instrumental band from Hereford. No video to be found anywhere though! On to the Singles Preview, for 2009: Based on actual sales Sun/Mon plus pre-orders for the week`s new entries. 01 03 I GOTTA FEELING - BLACK EYED PEAS 02 01 BEAT AGAIN - JLS 03 02 SUPERNOVA - MR HUDSON 04 04 EVACUATE THE DANCEFLOOR - CASCADA 05 08 I KNOW YOU WANT ME - PITBULL 06 05 BULLETPROOF - LA ROUX 07 06 WHEN LOVE TAKES OVER - DAVID GUETTA 08 09 SWEET DREAMS - BEYONCE 09 07 PAPARAZZI - LADY GAGA 10 10 POPPIHOLLA - CHICANE 11 16 BATTLEFIELD - JORDIN SPARKS 12 12 BOOM BOOM POW - BLACK EYED PEAS 13 11 DIAMOND RINGS - CHIPMUNK 14 14 KNOCK YOU DOWN - KERI 15 15 RELEASE ME - AGNES 16 21 IN FOR THE KILL - LA ROUX 17 20 RABBIT HEART - FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE 18 13 MAN IN THE MIRROR - MJ 19 19 NEVER FORGET YOU - NOISETTES 20 18 RED - DANIEL MERRIWEATHER 21 23 MAMA DO - PIXIE LOTT 22 17 HUSH HUSH - PUSSYCAT DOLLS 23 22 BONKERS - DIZZEE RASCAL/ARMAND VAN HELDON 24 26 DON`T TRUST ME - 3OH!3 25 25 POKERFACE - LADY GAGA 26 27 NUMBER ONE - TINCHY/N-DUBZ 27 NE I MADE IT THROUGH THE RAIN - JOHN BARROWMAN 28 24 UNTOUCHED - VERONICAS 29 33 FIRE - KASABIAN 30 28 HEARTBREAK MAKE ME A DANCER - FREEMASONS 31 29 CONFUSION GIRL - FRANKMUSIK 32 31 NOT FAIR - LILY ALLEN 33 47 JAI HO - A R RAHMAN 34 46 HALO - BEYONCE 35 51 WAKING UP IN VEGAS - KATY PERRY 36 52 BEAUTIFUL - EMINEM 37 NE FIRE BURNING - SEAN KINGSTON 38 30 KISS ME THRU THE PHONE - SOULJA BOY 39 39 WORK - SATURDAYS 40 45 21 GUNS - GREEN DAY 41 35 NEW DIVIDE - LINKIN PARK 42 32 BILLIE JEAN - MJ 43 40 JUST DANCE - LADY GAGA 44 44 I`M NOT ALONE - CALVIN HARRIS 45 36 DON`T UPSET THE RHYTHM - NOISETTES 46 RE PLEASE DON`T LEAVE ME - PINK 47 NE FUNHOUSE - PINK 48 38 STICKS AND STONES - JAMIE T. 49 NE JUMP - FLO RIDA/NELLY FURTADO 50 37 THRILLER - MJ A touch of class in the chart, from John Barrowman. "I Made It Through The Rain" was written by Gerard Kenny (who also wrote the theme to Minder for Dennis Waterman). Gerard didn`t fair to well in the charts on his own in Britain. Probably best known for the unfortunately hyped "New York New York (So Good They Named It Twice)". The hype on it, uncovered in 1978 prevented it from making the top 40, and it peaked at 42. Gerard did get some luck in 1980, when "Fantasy"...another great song, finally put him in the top 40. "I Made It Through The Rain" was a minor top 40 hit in 1981 for old Bazza (Barry Manilow, of course). Good news this week, as Jason Mraz drops outside the 50, at 51...but don`t blink he will be back before the Almost Saturday Chart, for sure! Outside and down further there is Little Boots (Remedy), Chris Brown (Forever), MSTRKRFT/John Legend (Heartbreaker). Britney, and The Twang both have problems. Here are some video highlights. Starting with Britney at #73, and no physical of this one. DDjsWy6B84U There`s Dakota and "Wildchild"...4 piece from Leamimgton Spa, following up a recent free download. Tipped to be band of 2009! 0tFFK3k9_U4 Can Eminem and "Beautiful" make it big again, on the coming release of the physical? This week`s 36: SAw9axFwzvU How about Vagabond "Don`t Wanna Run No More"...recently supported Simple Minds. Old fashioned soul from London, but can they make the chart (Sunday 9th Aug)with string of up and coming dates. Actually tipped as band of the decade! pdYtoM-HOhg Amelle/Tinchy Stryder "Never Leave You"...a tip for the top, on Sunday 9th? YrLn_1MtLwg
