Brad Pitt Helps Bono Celebrate 48th Birthday in Monaco

By Peter Mikelbank

Even by Monaco standards, it wasn't your ordinary dinner party for 12 on Friday night – though there was cake and champagne.

To celebrate his 48th birthday, U2 frontman Bono held a small dinner party at Sass' Café in Monaco. On the guest list: Brad Pitt, Monaco's Prince Albert II and The Edge.

"It was really quite a surprise," the café's maitre de tells PEOPLE. "It wasn't organized in advance. We only got called on it that afternoon."

Despite Pitt's presence, Angelina Jolie, who had visited Bono in Eze with her children last Sunday, remained at home.

The sit-down dinner, arranged by Bono's wife Ali Hewson, began with red wine at 10 p.m., according to staff, even before The Edge arrived for the evening. The meal was followed by a champagne toast and strawberry cake lit with candles; a staffer described the party as "tres speciale."

No word on what gifts Bono received – but what do you give a man who has his own rock band and has already been nominated for the Nobel Prize?

U2 peace gig was 'the best'

Mirror, May 09, 2008

Maeve Quigley

Bono has revealed U2's historic peace process gig at Belfast's Waterfront Hall was the highlight of their career.

In a new documentary Bono said he loved the fact that people got behind the peace process by voting yes in the referendum.

He added: "It's one of our proudest moments in the sense that this one evening, I think, definitely had a serious knock-on effect.

"It stole the headlines for two or three days just when it seemed the wave against the referendum was growing."

At the gig Bono held the hands of David Trimble and John Hume in the air in a symbol of hope.

The Edge said: "To have those two on the stage, I felt afterwards this had been a really important watershed.

"The mood was so positive but everyone knew the referendum was in the balance and it could have gone either way." The documentary is on BBC Radio Ulster at 11 a.m. on May 17.

Bono asks Beckham to climb Mount Kilimanjaro

9:15AM Tuesday May 20, 2008

Bono can be very persuasive, as David Beckham has found.

David Beckham is set to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

The soccer star decided to undertake the gruelling six day climb to raise money for children's charity Unicef after being asked by U2 frontman Bono.

A source close to the LA Galaxy player told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "The 19,340ft peak is a bit outside of David's normal comfort zone but he is absolutely set on making the climb.

"He was a bit uncertain at first but he found out, like many celebrities before him, that Bono can be very persuasive.

"No date has been fixed yet because David is very busy with his LA Galaxy commitments but he is absolutely set on doing it."

The 33-year-old football hero could also be joined by another British soccer star, West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green, as he climbs Africa's highest peak in north-east Tanzania.

David previously teamed up with Bono at the Live 8 concert in 2005 when he introduced British singer Robbie Williams.

U2's The Edge organises music auction

Friday, May 23 2008, 16:38 BST

By Alex Fletcher, Entertainment Reporter

U2's The Edge has helped to organise an auction of music memorabilia for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

It is the second year in a row the guitarist has put together the fundraiser with the help of Julien's Auctions.

The event, which is held at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square, New York on May 31, will feature items that were owned by The Ramones, Kurt Cobain, Elton John and Cher.

A spokesperson for Julien's Auctions said: "Last year we had 200 lots and The Edge was so impressed with the auction and the proceeds we raised he gave us a mandate to do bigger and better things this year.

"Quite honestly there's something for everyone and we don't want people to think they can't get something because there are some very affordable items."

Spiderman Heading To Broadway

May 23, 2008 7:38 a.m. EST

Anne Lu - Celebrity News Service News Writer

New York, NY (CNS) - Spiderman is heading to Broadway. Marvel confirms that the hero bitten by a radioactive spider will be taking the stage with a little help from U2's Bono and The Edge.

As reported by IESB.net, Marvel executive Peter Cuneo said the current status of the show is "definitely a go," they are just waiting for a theater to run it.

Bono and The Edge have completed the musical score for the play, which would be directed by Julie Taymor.

Cuneo says they are "very pleased with our Broadway show. The show is done, it's being directed by Julie Taymor who of course won the Tony for Lion King. The music has been done by Bono and The Edge."

The website also adds that the show would be open late 2009.

As quoted by IESB.net, Cuneo says, "A late '09 launch or a 2010... actually it's a challenge to find a theater on Broadway right now. These things are all scheduled, as you might imagine, well in advance. So the timing is more related to getting a theater than it is to the progress of the show."

Irish rockers U2's longtime manager PAUL MCGUINESS narrowly escaped paralysis recently after he was involved in a horrific horse riding accident.

The music mogul, who also manages the careers of singer PJ Harvey and New York rockers The Rapture, had to be taken to hospital after being thrown from a horse while riding near his estate in County Wicklow, Ireland.

A source tells Ireland's Sunday World newspaper, "It was a pretty bad fall and Paul broke his collarbone. He was rushed to hospital and was in absolute agony.

"He's still getting over it and knows he has had a lucky escape."

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band - Dublin RDS, May 22, 2008

2008-05-27 11:19:28

Bono looks tired. There are creases round his eyes when he removes his tinted glasses, creases that weren't there three decades ago. Tonight is an auspicious anniversary in the U2 camp. On May 18, 1978, Paul McGuinness became U2's manager and de facto fifth member, laying a crucial foundation for U2's - and indeed Bono's - world domination plans.

30 years later, McGuinness sits opposite Bono with his arm in a sling, enjoying the anniversary party in the plush basement restaurant of the Merrion Hotel, Dublin. U2 are not, however, the only notable guests at the hotel. The Merrion is temporary home to Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, who are just back from playing the first of three sell-out shows at Dublin's 35,000 capacity RDS Stadium. Springsteen himself makes no appearance at the aftershow hotel drinks, leaving Messrs Lofgren, Tallent and the ever-voluble Steve Van Zandt to entertain the local luminaries.

The RDS opener, the first stadium show of the Magic tour, has a few first night sound wobbles, but nothing to seriously unruffle the Boss. In preparation, Springsteen has spent most of the last three weeks making small club appearances round the Jersey shoreline, and his charismatic common touch was in evidence from the opening "Promised Land". Roaming the edge of the stage, he blows harmonica into a sea of outstretched hands, immediately reducing the size and scale of the gathering, establishing a real intimacy with the audience. But it's the continuity in Bruce's songwriting that allows him to maintain this connection through the show - right through, in fact, to the grand slam finale of "Thunder Road", "Born To Run" and "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out".

"Promised Land" is one of five songs from "Darkness On The Edge Of The Town" in the set, and it's striking how the mood of despondency and defiance is reflected in songs written 30 years later, Magic mainstays "Gypsy Biker" and "Livin' In The Future". The blues-blasted revamp of "Reason To Believe" proves especially thrilling - as are the three lead guitars duelling on "Future" and "Last To Die", with the Nils/Steve /Bruce interchange as exhilarating and incandescent as Lynryd Skynryd in their prime. Leaner and meaner, Springsteen in 2008 has cut the flab of his '80s mainstream heyday. His sense of proportion - and self deprecation - could provide a salutary guide to any rock gladiator preparing to re-enter the arena. . .

Which brings us back to U2. The en masse band turn-out is due to be repeated for the second show, and you imagine Springsteen, relaxed into his run, will probably touch base with the group he first met in the early '80s. But tonight, with the Boss absent, it's left to Van Zandt to hold court. He does this easily and aimiably, fulminating at the inherently racist treatment of Barack Obama by his Democratic Party rivals; planning to bring his campaign to save real rock'n'roll, now more vital than ever, across the Atlantic.

Even Steve, though, has a job out-gassing Bono. Tired or otherwise, the U2 man still talks up a storm. He rants about how, with the contemporary devaluation of music, U2 couldn't exist today. About the paucity of young engaging rock journalists compared with the prophetic nature of Greil Marcus. About the wrongheadedness of John Lennon's involvement with Irish politics - the rather unseemly inference here being that he, Bono, had GOT IT RIGHT where Lennon f***ed up. The curious thing about Bono's declarations is that he's making them sat between myself and Dave Marsh - the veteran US rock critic, Springsteen biographer, husband of The Boss's co-manager Barbara Carr, and, last but not least, one of Bono's most persistent and penetrating critics.

Perhaps it's nerves, perhaps it's bluster but in the midst of the exchange Bono makes an unsolicited offer. He wants to engage in a head-to-head discussion with Marsh on his US Sirius satellite radio show on the subject of celebrity politics ("It's something I know a lot about," insists Bono) and the various criticisms Marsh has made of Bono's extra-curricular activities on his Rap Rock Confidential newsletter.

When Bono leaves, Marsh is somewhat taken aback and, in an offer perhaps just as rash as that made by the U2 singer, he says that if Bono makes good on his offer and it proves to be more than heat of the minute bluster, he wants me to be there too, putting criticisms of my own. I hadn't really got the much vaunted magic of Bruce's "Magic" until tonight's show, which had given me a renewed Reason To Believe in the Bos. Perhaps a head-to-head with Bono will help renew my faith in another performer with whom I've become increasingly disillusioned.

Like the man said, watch this space....

Bono joins tree-planting drive

Updated 13.53 Tue May 27 2008

U2 singer Bono has taken part in a tree-planting project with schoolchildren in Tokyo.

The rocker, who's known for his humanitarian and philanthropic work, led the event which is part of the city's environmental initiatives project.

The rocker, who's known for his humanitarian and philanthropic work, led the event which is part of the city's environmental initiatives projectHe encouraged the attendees to become more environmentally friendly, saying: "I do believe that politicians like Governor Ishihara need to hear from you that this is important to you. It's your money that they are spending.

"That is what I'll be doing over the week as well as planting this tree today. Finding out how much support there are for these issues of environment and extreme poverty."

Nearly 100 children sang together with the legendary rock singer at The Sea Forest where a total of 480,000 trees are due to be planted, creating an 88 hectare forest floating off Tokyo bay.

The city hopes the forest when completed in 2016 will help cool the city down during the hot summer months.

Bono also plans to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development, where he will be among 43 leaders of African nations to discuss poverty, conflict, the food crisis and disease in the continent.

U2's Bono Given Honorary Degree By Japanese University

By: Don Kaye

U2 frontman Bono was given an honorary degree by Japan's Keio University on Tuesday (May 27th) for his contribution to music and humanitarian causes, according to Gigwise.com. The singer was met by an enthusiastic response from students at the college, where he spoke about the need to not ignore the continuing struggles in Africa against poverty and AIDS. Bono is currently in Japan to attend the fourth Tokyo International conference on Africa Development ahead of the G8 summit, which takes place in July and will also be held in Japan on the island of Hokkaido.

Japan's aid to Africa has fallen off in recent years after reaching a peak in the '90s.

Bono has spent years meeting with leaders of the industrialized world to plea for continued aid to Africa.

The Irish rocker was the second artist to receive an honorary degree this week. Paul McCartney was given one by Yale University on Monday (May 26th).

U2 has been working on its new CD with producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, who together and separately have been involved with classic U2 records like The Unforgettable Fire, Achtung Baby and The Joshua Tree.

More in his line to plant a few trees in his own country... <_< we have lots of environmental at home so get back here Bono.... <_< <_< <_<

U2 tower is 'stuck in a moment'

Fears over property downturn may stall band's ambitious elevation

Sunday June 01 2008

THERE are growing doubts over the future of the landmark U2 tower in Dublin's docklands as the fallout from economic downturn continues to take its toll on the property market.

Informed construction industry sources believe the erection of the Liffeyside high-rise building will at the very least be delayed, or even abandoned as the economic feasibility of the PPP (Public Private Partnership) project diminishes.

Speaking to the Sunday Independent, one highly-placed source said: "The final contracts haven't been signed between the developer (Ballymore Homes) and the DDDA (Dublin Docklands Development Authority). Given the way things are going in the industry, don't expect anything to happen soon."

While media reports on May 7 had suggested that a signed agreement between the DDDA and Geranger -- a consortium consisting of Sean Mulryan's Ballymore Homes, developer Paddy McKillen and U2 members -- was imminent; last Friday little progress appeared to have been made.

Responding to the claims that the construction of the U2 tower was now in doubt, a spokesperson for the Docklands Authority said the "negotiation process was still ongoing" and that there were "many complicated issues which have to be agreed" before the development would commence.

Interestingly, the spokesperson referred to Geranger -- the consortium of which Ballymore Homes is a member -- as the "provisional" preferred bidder for the development of the U2 tower.

The spokesperson stressed, however, that the dockland authority was satisfied with progress on the negotiations.

Ballymore Homes, meanwhile, refused to comment on claims that it was reluctant to sign the final contracts required before the development of the U2 tower could get underway.

Responding to questions on the matter last Friday, a spokesperson for the developer said: "In agreement with the Dublin Docklands Development Authority, Ballymore Homes is precluded from commenting on this to the media."

The proposed 120-metre tower is the latest Public Private Partnership (PPP) project to come under threat from worsening conditions in the residential property sector.

Only two weeks ago, five PPP housing regeneration schemes were derailed after multimillionaire developer Bernard McNamara withdrew on the grounds that they were no longer financially viable and is currently discussing the future of the project with Dublin City Council.

Explaining his decision, Mr McNamara cited larger apartment sizes and tighter building regulations as the major factors in making the developments in Dublin's inner city unworkable.

In the case of the proposed U2 tower development, among the hundreds of apartments and offices there are plans for the provision of a block of 34 social and affordable housing units under the terms of the PPP agreement.

Given the prevailing economic conditions, industry sources maintain that it is the proposal for luxury apartments and a high-end hotel that will be of more concern to the development consortium.

The most notable element of the project, however, is the proposal for an egg-shaped recording studio for U2.

Suspended beneath vertical wind turbines and a massive solar panel, the studio to replace the band's famous Windmill Lane facility is poised to raise the height of the Norman Foster-designed tower to 180 metres -- 60 metres higher than the O'Connell Street Spire.

Bono visits Japan in run-up to G8 summit

Bono is due to present a special activism award at the MTV awards in Tokyo tomorrow night.

Today he and Bob Geldof will take Africa into the homes of a staggering 8 million readers when they act as editors of the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.

Bono has been in Japan all week to attend TICAD, a Japanese-led gathering of 42 African heads of state. Yesterday he met Prime Minister Fukuda and addressed the conference with economist Jeff Sachs, Nobel Laureate Wangari Mattai, and Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour. “With the G8 round the corner, Japan will be centre stage” said Bono. “Millions of lives will depend on the decisions made here in July”. Taking a break from the official conference, he and Youssou met up with British sculptor Anthony Gormley who had organized an human sculpture to raise awareness of malaria and other infectious diseases that are rampant across Africa. Speaking to activists and NGOs, Bono said "It is very simple : the quality and quantity of aid depend on civil society. The likelihood of the government fulfilling their commitments to fight extreme poverty depends on active social movements."

Earlier this week Bono received an Honorary Doctorate in Law from the prestigious Keio University in Tokyo on Tuesday.

Bono's Dream: A United States of Africa

Originally posted Tuesday June 03, 2008 11:00 AM EDT

If Bono has his way, there would be two U.S.A.s.

The U2 frontman says the second U.S.A. – a United States of Africa – could help end the strife which afflict much of the continent, according to Agence France-Presse, citing a special Africa edition of Japan's Asahi Shimbun newspaper that Bono guest-edited over the weekend.

"[it] would be the dream," said the singer. "I think a kind of broader African identity is going to be very important to deal with tribal tensions."

Though a United States of Africa may seem more "poetic" and symbolic than a legitimate solution to conflict, Bono says the American USA is an inspiration that has proven otherwise.

"Irish people used to always have a little giggle when they would see Americans saluting their flags in schools ... singing the flag thing," Bono, who recently rang in his 48th birthday in Monaco with Brad Pitt, a fellow activist for Africa.

But, he says, "there's so many different tribal groups in the United States, that to create a national identity of that size, they had to really work at this kind of patriotism."

Africa already has a continent-spanning organization: The African Union, created in 2002, which it has since become more of a joint peace-keeping force with the United Nations.

U2 manager lashes out at ISPs again

Paul McGuinness delivers Music Matters keynote

By Steve McClure, Billboard

June 4, 2008, 12:52 PM

HONG KONG -- U2 manager Paul McGuinness has delivered another hard-hitting speech in which he said that by refusing to join forces with the legitimate music business, Internet service providers are clinging to the past and preventing the music industry's future growth.

In his keynote presentation at the Music Matters conference in Hong Kong on June 4, McGuinness said he wants to see "a real commercial partnership" between ISPs and the music business in which they fairly share their revenues, as well as "action to stop mass copyright theft."

McGuinness had used his keynote speech at MIDEM in January to accuse ISPs of "destroying the recorded music industry" by failing to tackle piracy, and he returned to this theme in Hong Kong -- although he welcomed some initiatives by European governments.

"Privately negotiated revenue-sharing partnerships are, I believe, a key model for the future," said McGuinness, who has managed the superstar Irish band for the past 30 years.

"One way or another, ISPs and mobile operators are the business partners of the future for the recorded-music business," he said. "But they are going to have to share the money in a way that reflects what music is doing for their business."

McGuinness believes that's especially true in China, where he says leading telecom China Mobile makes "hundreds of millions of dollars each year from sales of ringtones and ringback tones, yet pays a minuscule fraction of that to performers, producers and composers. That to me is not a fair business partnership."

While dismissing the general international legal framework as being of "only limited help," McGuinness welcomed recent initiatives by the French, British, Danish and other national governments aimed at disconnecting large-scale illegal file-sharers and exploring the filtering of copyright-infringing networks.

"Progress depends on national governments," McGuinness said in a press briefing after his speech. "I would like to see the workers (creators) paid, which they aren't at the moment."

In rejecting an advertising revenue-driven business model for the music industry, he said he doesn't want to see "artists reduced to the status of employees working for glorified ad agencies."

"The music business once had to bear the accusation that it was full of dinosaurs who looked back to an old business model rather than embracing a new one," McGuinness said. "Today, though, it is the music business that is charting the way to the future.

"If there are dinosaurs around today, I think they are the Internet free-thinkers of the past who believe that copyright is the great obstacle to progress, that the distributors of content should enjoy profits without responsibilities and that the creators and producers of music should simply subordinate their rights to the rights of everyone else. We have not reversed the troubles of the music industry yet -- but at least the dinosaurs are no longer running the show."
