U2 Manager Criticizes Radiohead

10-Jun-2008

Written by: E. Van Dril

U2 is currently working on their next album.

U2’s manager has gone on record saying that Radiohead’s self-released album “In Rainbows” backfired, and went on to say that the supergroup’s next album won’t be given away for free. Paul McGuinness called Radiohead’s innovative strategy, which was adopted in the light of declining record sales and increasing piracy, a failure. This is because even though fans could dictate how much they’d pay for the album (some even for free), many people still obtained the album illegally. “60 to 70 percent of the people who downloaded the record stole it anyway,” he told BBC 6 Music’s Music Week, “even though it was available for free.” Addressing how the upcoming U2 album will be released, McGuinness said “We will obviously work with whatever technology is available to make the release of the new record as interesting as possible. [but] for U2 physical sales are still an enormous part of our business and we still sell a lot of actual CDs.” Their next album will be a follow-up to 2004’s Grammy-winning “How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.”

U2 to Sell Basquiat at Sotheby’s London

By Oliver Basciano

Published: June 12, 2008

Courtesy Sotheby's- Jean Michel Basquiat's "Untitled (Pecho/Oreja)" (1982-83), owned by rock band U2, will be auctioned at Sotheby's London on July 1.

LONDON—A Jean Michel Basquiat work, Untitled (Pecho/Oreja) (1982-83), owned by the Irish rock band U2 has been announced as the headline lot in Sotheby’s London’s Contemporary Art Evening Sale, scheduled for July 1. The painting, made when Basquiat was 22, contains many of the motifs that would continue throughout the artist’s short career, including the roughly sketched, highly expressive head, and is expected to fetch £6m.

The work was bought from the Robert Miller Gallery in New York by bassist Adam Clayton in 1989. From there it was transported back to the band’s Dublin studio, where it has hung ever since.

Sotheby’s hopes that the painting will go the way of the last rock star-owned Basquiat work put up to auction, Profit I (1982), which was owned by Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich and which doubled its presale estimate, bringing in $5,509,500 at Christie’s New York in May 2002.

Oliver Barker, a specialist in the Sotheby’s contemporary art department, said: "It seems especially appropriate that a work by Basquiat should end up at a music studio, since so much has been said about the relationship between his art and music." In addition to U2 and Ulrich, David Bowie and Lenny Kravitz are also said to own works by the artist.

In May 2007, Sotheby’s established a world record at auction for Basquiat when it sold Untitled (1981) for $14.6 million in New York.

Bono Statue Needs Money

June 18, 2008

Edited by Debbie McGoldrick

A DUBLIN artist who’s obviously quite talented – he created the statue of Irish musician Phil Lynott on Harry Street in the city – is well into his next project, but it’s proving so costly that he’s run out of funds and may not complete it.

The subject in question is Bono, and artist Paul Daley has been working on the statue of the U2 superstar for three months. But Bono remains unfinished in Daley’s workspace because he can’t afford the materials to go on.

“It’s a labor of love really but I’ve gone with it as far as I can go without funding. Artists normally get commissioned to make pieces like this but I got so wrapped up in what I was doing, I didn’t think about the cost,” Daley told the Sunday Tribune.

The likeness of Bono comes from a photo that Daley saw during the band’s Joshua Tree tour. “There’s something incredibly powerful about Bono in this period. Evangelical almost. The way he stood on stage at Live Aid, the goodness of the man, and that’s what appealed to me and started me making the piece,” he added.

But will the piece ever get finished? A logical starting point for financing would be Bono himself, but Daley hasn’t gone that route . . . yet.

“No I haven’t approached U2. Things look pretty hopeless now but in my heart of heart I know I’ll finish it,” he says. Perhaps if Bono read the piece over his Sunday breakfast he’ll take pity and come up with the dough.

U2's Bono: 'Radiohead were courageous for 'In Rainbows' release'

Singer rejects manager's claim that download 'backfired'

Jun 24, 2008

U2's Bono has sent a letter to NME this week (June 25) following the band's manager Paul McGuinness's comments regarding Radiohead's decision to release their last album, 'In Rainbows', on a pay-what-you-like basis as a download.

Earlier this month, McGuinness said Radiohead's album release \"backfired\" and that U2 would not be following the Oxford band's example when they release their next record.

In the letter, printed in tomorrow's (June 25) edition of NME, Bono says that he disagrees with his manager's comments, calling Radiohead "courageous and imaginative in trying to figure out some new relationship with their audience".

"Such imagination and courage are in short supply right now," he continued. "They're [Radiohead], a sacred talent, and we feel blessed to be around at the same time."

Read the full letter from Bono in the new issue of NME, out nationwide tomorrow.

Stars gather for Nelson Mandela birthday show

By JILL LAWLESS – 8 hours ago

LONDON (AP) — Queen, Leona Lewis and Amy Winehouse were among the performers due to serenade Nelson Mandela at a concert Friday honoring the South African statesman's 90th birthday.

Winehouse, whose participation was in doubt when she was hospitalized last week after fainting, is reported to have rehearsed a rendition of the Specials' 1984 anthem "Free Nelson Mandela" for the Hyde Park show, hosted by Will Smith.

The event marks Mandela's birthday July 18 and comes 20 years after a 70th birthday concert at Wembley Stadium that helped press South Africa's apartheid authorities for his freedom.

Proceeds from the show — which organizers hoped would be attended by 46,664 people — will go to 46664, the AIDS charity named for the number Mandela wore in prison.

Queen guitarist Brian May said the event was "as important and as joyful as anything we've done in our lives, and has a great serious significance as well."

"It's very much about spreading Nelson Mandela's message to the next generation, and I'm very happy to be a part of it," May said.

Annie Lennox, who performed at the 1988 show as part of Eurythmics, was scheduled to sing Friday. Also on the lineup: Josh Groban, the Soweto Gospel Choir, Simple Minds, Sugababes, Razorlight and African artists including Johnny Clegg and Papa Wemba.

Organizers said Bono and The Edge from the Irish band U2 had recorded a version of "Happy Birthday" that would be shown on big screens during the show.

Mandela, a frequent visitor to London, has been in the city since Monday for a week of birthday events. On Wednesday, he attended a dinner with guests including Prime Minister Gordon Brown, former President Clinton, Robert De Niro and Oprah Winfrey.

Mandela was released from prison in 1990 after 27 years behind bars, and was elected South Africa's first black president in 1994. He retired from politics in 1999 and has since campaigned to prevent the spread of AIDS.

Tuesday, 01 July 2008 Product (RED) plots music subscription service

Subscribe to (RED) music service, help ease AIDS in Africa

Jonny Evans

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bono and the Product (RED) team plan a music subscription service to raise funds for the fight against AIDS in Africa.

To be launched this autumn the new scheme is being led by Hear Music founder, Don MacKinnon, founder of Hear Music and former VP music and entertainment at Starbucks.

Under the scheme, music fans and (RED) supporters will be able to sign-up for the $5 per month service, in return they will receive classic music from world class acts, new sounds from up and coming artists, information about (RED) and a surprise piece of digital content each month.

U2, Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Elton John, Emmylou Harris and Death Cab for Cutie have all signed-up to take part in this initiative, a report claims.

“(RED) is such a powerful model,” said MacKinnon. “The world’s best brands created (RED) products that have generated over $110 million. What we are doing now is applying the (RED) model to music. Every week you will receive great music from amazing artists and people living with AIDS in Africa will receive lifesaving antiretroviral medicine.”

All the songs are permanent downloads in unprotected MP3 format. The content is delivered via a small application that the user downloads to their computer’s desktop, built by Passalong Networks.

Half of each month’s membership fee will be contributed directly to the Global Fund. Just five subscribers will generate enough money annually to provide a person living with HIV with antiretroviral treatment for one year.

“Don MacKinnon just might be the penicillin the ailing music business needs. He is an innovator by nature and I have no doubt that some of the music software we are working on at (RED) will help change the way music is received, as well as changing the lives of Africans who will die without the AIDS drug that (RED) can help purchase,” said Bono.

U2 bassist Adam Clayton picked-out this particular artwork, which then found a new home in their Dublin studio.

A spokesman for the auction house said a private buyer bought 'Untitled (Pecho/Oreja)' for £5,081,250.

Box Sets Face Uncertain Future

7/8/2008 By Brock Thiessen

Look at almost any report on music sales and you will see CDs on the decline. But what about when they come packaged as a group, when they come as some fancy high-ticket box set? Well, according to some retailers, the future seems to be even more grim for these hefty multi-disc collections.

Sales of box sets are reportedly down — way down — a recent Billboard article has reported, causing several labels to be reluctant about releasing them at all. "Boxed-set sales have fallen off the cliff; they went from something to nothing," Bryan Everitt, director of music purchasing at U.S. retail chain Hastings Entertainment, said in an interview with Billboard. "This Christmas we will have a limited selection of boxed sets, the slimmest we have ever offered. Unless the majors seriously look at reducing the price of the boxed set — they still think they should cost $39.98 or $49.98 — sales will continue to slide."

And by looking at the sales figures tracked by Nielsen SoundScan, these worries over the future of the sets seem well-founded. The last time there was a “hit” box set was in 2004, when Nirvana’s With the Lights Out sold 504,000 units.

However, with some notable sets by the Jesus & Mary Chain, Neil Young and Jane’s Addiction slated for later this year, not everyone is so pessimistic. "Boxed sets are alive and well as long as you're realistic about your expectations and who the ultimate consumer is," a sales executive who works with one of the majors told Billboard. "There are some artists where you can sell 50,000 units but there are others where you might reach the 15,000-20,000 range, so you have to plan your P&L [profit and loss] accordingly."

Also, while high box-set prices are a concern among retailers, a large dollar amount doesn’t necessarily mean low sales or profits. Newbury Comics head of purchasing Carl Mello pointed to Nine Inch Nails Ghosts I-IV, which sold 2,500 copies at a price of $300 a pop. Mello also cited the new version of U2’s The Joshua Tree, which sold 37,000 units of the high-end deluxe version at $59.98 U.S., while the regular version sold 123,000 at $29.98 U.S.

“Everything is relative," a major label exec said. "In this environment, you move with the marketplace. So you change your expectations and watch cost much more closely."
