Bill Gates' favourite band is U2

All revealed in Reddit AMA

11 Feb 2013 20:16

In a verified "ask me anything" thread on Reddit, Microsoft founder Bill Gates has admitted that his favourite band is U2.

As well as pledging to continue the fight against Polio, in a revealing comment, he said: "U2 is a favorite [sic].. I keep waiting for Spinal Tap to go back on tour".

Gates also expressed his fears of a terrorist-instigated nuclear or biological weapon holocaust, claimed he is an avid bridge player, and also loves playing tennis. He enjoys touring interesting things with his kids, such as power plants and garbage dumps.

The biggest impact of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation so far, he said, is "getting vaccines for things like diarrhea and pneumonia out which has saved millions of lives".

Gates also said he is dedicated to improving education in the United States, though he did not answer a well-rated question from user 'jedberg', which read: "How would you respond to teachers who say there is no way to objectively measure teacher performance, because it is too dependent on the specific kids in the class and their socioeconomic circumstances?"

LONDON (AP) — Bookmakers have been quick to offer odds on candidates to replace Pope Benedict XVI, with cardinals from Ghana, Nigeria and Canada among the early favorites.

Ghana's Cardinal Peter Turkson, Canada's Cardinal Marc Ouellet and Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria lead in betting with Britain's major bookmakers.

William Hill made Turkson — one of the highest-ranking African cardinals at the Vatican — its 3/1 favorite Monday, followed by Ouellet at 7/2 and Arinze at 4/1. Ladbrokes also had Turkson as favorite, followed by Arinze and Ouellet.

Ireland's Paddy Power also offered short odds on the three, as well as long odds on unlikely candidates — including U2 singer Bono at 1,000/1. It also offered 1,000/1 odds on Father Dougal Maguire, the simpleminded fictional priest from 1990s U.K. sitcom "Father Ted." :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

Bruce Willis pays €6.5mill for U2 flat

Published: 15th February 2013

U2 bass player Adam Clayton has sold his New York flat to Die Hard star Bruce Willis for €6.5 million.

The third-floor flat, in the Eldorado building on Central Park West, was originally two apartments.

Clayton bought the first unit in 1993 for €465,000 and the second a year later for €325,000, and combined the two.

The redesigned flat, described as an “art deco gem,” has a 38 foot entrance hall with a polished herringbone-pattern wood floor, with sliding doors in wood, steel and glass leading formal living and dining rooms.

The 500 square foot living room, with the same wooden flooring, has a fireplace, open shelves and three nearly floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park.

he 28 foot dining room has two windows with the same view.

There is an eat-in kitchen facing north and west, with a tiled floor and a butler’s pantry and laundry room. It has slate countertops and stainless steel appliances.

The master bedroom, set into a corner, has a bathroom with marble features, a bath and a separate shower, and there are two guest rooms.

A fourth bedroom has been converted to a dressing room, reached through the master bathroom.

The building has a 24-hour doorman, concierge services, a gym, a children’s playroom, a miniature basketball court and a bicycle storage room.

Bono and The Edge have both owned flats in the building in the past, and other celebrity residents have included Faye Dunaway, Alec Baldwin and Moby.

Willis, 57, whose latest film, A Good Day To Die Hard, has opened to bad reviews, also owns properties in Hailey, Idaho, and Beverly Hills, California.

He previously lived on Central Park West with first wife Demi Moore.

Jamelia’s verdict on U2 star: You’ve got Bono chance, pal

By JENNIFER O’BRIEN

Published: 15th February 2013

THE VOICE coach Jamelia reckons Bono would struggle to make it on the talent show.

The RnB star slipped up on a radio interview yesterday when she failed to recognise the U2 frontman’s voice.

Today FM presenter Ian Dempsey played an audio clip for Jamelia, asking what she thought of “a random guy” singing Neil Diamond and if she would turn her Voice chair for him. The singer responded: “It sounds cute but not for The Voice of Ireland, no I’m sorry...

“He’s kind of in tune but he sounds like he’s kind of talking — he’s not really singing but he sounds like he is having fun.”

The Bono recording came from an impromptu performance of Beautiful Noise he gave at a book launch in Dublin last week.

And when Jamelia discovered she had ruled out Ireland’s most famous singer for The Voice, the star was horrified.

She squealed: “Oh no, I’ll just go home now shall I?

“Why is he singing like that?

“This is like going to England and offending the Queen — trust me to do it.” Stunning Jamelia will appear with her final 12 acts on the battle stages of the show this weekend.

And she admitted that her onscreen spats with the judges including Sharon Corr are set to continue.

She said: “I think we have artistic differences, we are both very musically passionate and I think it shows.

“Bressie? I would say I get on best with him, we might fight on screen but... I would say out of all of us, Bressie takes his job the most serious.”

The Superstar crooner hit the headlines when she picked brothers Barry and Wayne Beatty for her group battles earlier in the series.

And she admitted yesterday that the Dubliners are now two of her favourite competitors on the show.

Jamelia said: “They are the loveliest guys.

“I know you aren’t supposed to have favourites but Barry and Wayne, I adore them. They are so sweet.”

Jamelia is on the Irish version of The Voice which is quite good actually, she is real feisty so she is.The judges aregu all the time,Kian Egan is a pain in the arse but good television

Bono: ‘I’m An Insufferable Jumped-Up Jesus’

Posted: February 28, 2013

Bono has labelled himself as an “insufferable jumped-up Jesus,” as he gave a speech about world poverty.

Speaking at the TED, which stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design, conference in Southern California, the U2 lead singer also called himself a “nerd.” Bono also revealed that he thought technology might eliminate extreme poverty by 2030.

Speaking to an invited crowd Bono stated, “Forget the rock opera. Forget the bombast. The only thing singing today is the facts. I have truly embraced my inner nerd. Exit the rock star. Enter the evidence-based activist. The factavist.”

In the audience at the event was Bill Gates, who listened to Bono reveal that the deaths from Malaria have dropped and that more people with AIDS are being saved with treatment too. The singer also stated that 7,256 fewer children died each days than ten years ago.

However, Bono was quick to warn people, saying, “The rate is still too high, but it is mind-blowing, heart-stopping stuff. If we get to the Zero Zone, for number crunchers like us, that is the erogenous zone. I am sexually aroused by the collating of data,” in a rather peculiar manner.

Bono even managed to make a joke at the event, saying that his own personal target to eradicate extreme poverty in 2030 was “only three Rolling Stone farewell concerts away.”

However, he stated that this could only be achieved if people kept up the pressure on governments to invest in research techniques to tackle poverty.

Bono is still hard at work on his day job, as U2 are working on their 13th album which, they confirmed, will be released when it is ready.

U2’s Bono and Ryanair Michael O’Leary highlight errors in Ireland’s property tax evaluations

Are property taxes in Ireland favoring the rich !!

As one of Ireland's wealthiest people, U2 frontman Bono could be saving thousands under a new controversial tax

Bono and Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary could save thousands in a controversial tax based on how their homes have been valued on the Revenue Commissioners’ new website.

Eyebrows have been raised by the new property tax, with homeowners expected to accurately assess what to pay the government based on the value of their houses.

The tax is assessed based on the value of a home. It is €90 if the property is worth under €100,000. The amount payable increases with every extra €50,000 the home is valued at. If it is worth more than €1 million the tax is €1,800 and for every extra €1 million the tax goes up another €2,500.

The tax will be introduced in July, but this week the Revenue Commissioners have issued an online website to assist householders when making personal assessments of the tax due. That’s why eyebrows have been raised.

U2 singer Bono’s home at Vico Road, south Dublin, a detached house built before the year 2000, is among a group of homes priced on the site at between €550,000 and €600,000. That would mean Bono paying just €1,034 a year in the new tax.

But his mansion is estimated to be worth several million euro. It is estimated that the real value of Bono’s house is about €2.5 million, putting the tax due at a minimum of €2,775 a year – two and a half times more than is assessed on the website.

O’Leary’s country pile in Gigginstown, Co. Westmeath, is also reckoned to be grossly undervalued and would leave him liable to tax of only €157 for a full year.

Terraced homes in Howth, Co. Dublin, once a major attraction during the property boom, are still valued at between €300,001 and €350,000. But real estate agents maintain their true value is much less with one home in the area going for €130,000 earlier this year.,

Ronan Lyons, economist with Daft.ie, Ireland’s number one property website, said the system is vague because it doesn’t allow for the different sizes of homes.

He said the Revenue Commissioners didn’t have all the key information for the assessment website like the numbers of rooms and the square meterage of a house. That meant a “relatively vague” value of the property appeared on the site.

He said, “That presents issues in Dublin and the rest of the country, where values are vastly different. In the case of a large, new detached property that is beside another and appears on paper to be the same, may be a much smaller property.”

Revenue Commissioners have begun distributing tax forms to 1.8 million householders nationwide this week. Property owners who believe the revenue estimate is wrong will be able to appeal.

THE much-hyped U2 Tower has been binned by Dublin City Council.

The plan for Dublin's Docklands was conceived during the boom, but the local authority admits there is no "realistic opportunity" of developing it.

In 2007, the Geranger Ltd consortium – which included developer Patrick McKillen and Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen – beat four other tenders.

The tower was to be the tallest building in the country.

The design included an egg-shaped recording studio, suspended from a 600ft luxury apartment block.

Jack White on U2's 'Achtung Baby': 'I Listened to That on Repeat as a Teenager'

Guitarist talks 'Great Gatsby' contribution, 'Love Is Blindness'

By DAN HYMAN

May 6, 2013 12:05 PM ET

Jack White was a teenager in blue-collar Detroit when he purchased U2's heavy left turn of a seventh album, Achtung Baby. "I listened to that a lot in my headphones," he says. Almost immediately, the bluesman was drawn to the LP's closing track, "Love Is Blindness." "I listened to that on repeat quite often," says White, whose cover of the U2 classic appears on the soundtrack for The Great Gatsby.

Bono appeared on CBS This Morning Thursday (May 16) to talk to host Charlie Rose about activism and music. Bono’s appearancecomes on the heels of a new biography, The Frontman: Bono (In the Name of Power) that denounces the U2 frontman’s anti-poverty campaigning (among other things). Though Rose and Bono never mentioned the book, written by Dublin-based writer Harry Browne, the singer’s appearance could be seen as a counter-argument to the unflattering biography.

In the interview, the man born Paul Hewson said that he follows Nelson Mandela’s belief that “poverty is not a natural condition,” and that it is “manmade.” Bono made the point that his activism isn’t about “charity.” “I’ve always been on a justice tip,” he said, “rather than a charity one.”

On the topic of AIDS, he called the United States a “heroic story.” “You are way out in front in the fight against AIDS,” he told Rose, claiming that most of the 8 million worldwide on medication for the disease are alive because of the efforts of the U.S. “Do Americans know that? Do they know that they’re part of this incredible story? To me, this is as heroic as your intervention in the Second World War.”

Also discussed: Bono’s messianic complex, something Bono fully accepts, noting that “anyone who finds their way to the front of a rock band… has definitely got a messianic complex.”

Other revelations in the interview included the frontman’s thoughts on songwriting, saying “[songs are] like your parents. They tell you what to do, they tell you how to behave, they tell you how to misbehave, how to dress. Everything you do is directed by the songs.” He also discussed his motivation behind a new U2 album, saying that he doesn’t want to make a new record “unless it’s great.”

Perhaps most interesting were his thoughts on John Lennon — in particular, his opinion of the legendary singer’s classic “Imagine”: a tune that, on the surface, might seem fairly in line with Bono’s worldview.

“I don’t play that song; it’s the only John Lennon song I don’t like,” he admitted. “I love so many things about John Lennon; he wrote the blueprint. But imagining wasn’t one of them. I’m more about doing, more about actions, following my nose [and] following my curiosity to understand people better, understand the world better [and] understand myself better.”
