Travel writer Theroux reignites row with 'meddlesome' Bono over Africa

RALPH RIEGEL – 05 JUNE 2013

TRAVEL writer Paul Theroux has reignited his feud with U2 singer Bono, with a scathing attack on the Irish rock band's stance on Africa and the Third World.

Mr Theroux, who is the star speaker at the Immrama Festival of Travel Writing next week in Lismore, Co Waterford, was unapologetic for his criticisms of the band and their Third World Aid campaign.

The US writer argued that if just a fraction of the money spent on U2 via red carpet receptions worldwide was spent in Africa it would benefit thousands. He also hit out at the band for their investments over the past 30 years.

Speaking on the 'Pat Kenny Show', he claimed the band's stance on crucial development issues, particularly in Africa, was "meddlesome". Mr Theroux also warned comparisons between some anti-apartheid songs and Irish protest ballads were very misleading.

In his book 'The Last Train to Zona Verde', he claimed that such comparisons were effectively "ignorant". He was particularly scathing of Bono for comparing Irish rebel ballads to South African songs such as 'Shoot The Boer'.

In 2005, he launched a broadside against Bono warning: "It seems to have been Africa's fate to become a theatre of empty talk and public gestures."

Both Bono and U2 have so far maintained a dignified silence over Mr Theroux's latest broadside.

U2 Play Acoustic 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' for Agit8

Rockers contribute song to One Campaign's anti-poverty initiative

ByERIN COULEHAN JUNE 14, 2013 3:05 PM

U2 have posted a clip of them performing an acoustic version of "Sunday Bloody Sunday," joining bands contributing protest songs to the One Campaign's agit8 anti-poverty initiative.

In snippets of an interview interspersed with performance footage, Bono describes listening to John Lennon, Bob Marley and Bob Dylan singing songs of dissent, and realizing that the world is malleable, and that conditions can be changed. "Things did not have to be as things were," he said.

U2 recorded the "Sunday Bloody Sunday" clip on a rooftop in New York earlier this month while the band was in town finishing up a new record. The One Campaign, which was co-founded by Bono and seeks to end extreme poverty and preventable diseases around the globe, also released a new acoustic performance of Bruce Springsteen's "The Promised Land," along with clips of Elvis Costello and Mumford & Sons singing Springsteen's "The Ghost of Tom Joad" and Tom Morello performing his Nightwatchman song "Flesh Shapes the Day.

Bono: I love Jagger's wrinkles

Bono has been talking about how much he admires Mick Jagger

25 JULY 2013

Bono has confessed his great love and admiration for Mick Jagger- even his wrinkles.

The Rolling Stones frontman turns 70 this week :o (July 26) and the 53-year-old U2 star told a German newspaper he is such a fan, he would just like to spend every day with Mick and carry his guitar for him, reported the Daily Mirror.

Bono said: "Mick looks a bit like [Mikhail] Baryshnikov, like a ballet dancer from a different age. At the same time he still has a very beautiful face.

"The wrinkles that run through it now have made it even more beautiful. Why? Because he wears those wrinkles well. I love his wrinkles."

He added: "I would like to see him on the day.

"And then I would like to carry his guitar case for him."

U2 beat The Rolling Stones to claim the highest grossing concert tour of all time in 2011, making £479 million from their 360 Degree tour, and Bono says he owes all his money-making skills to Mick.

He explained: "People despise Mick because they think he only thinks about money, but he is a businessman above all else.

"The fact is, he understands the business. Why? Because the Stones lost a lot of money in the beginning. I have to kneel in reverence to what he has achieved.

"What I like about him as a person is that he always speaks his mind openly and he never talks much about himself. He is not a narcissistic person."

Nile Rodgers wants to work with The Edge

Chic musician Nile Rodgers is planning to record with U2 guitarist The Edge and thinks they will ''feed off each other'' when they jam.

The Chic legend has struck up a friendship with the Irish axeman and thinks they could write some great sounding tracks together.

He told The Sun newspaper: ''He is a great human, really special. I said to him, 'Dude, think about what this s**t would sound like if you and me were playing guitar together.'

''U2 are working on an album right now so it wouldn't be for a while. I fantasise about how it would be, play out the scenario in my head.

''I don't even know what that would sound like but to me it's got to be cool. Why would you not do that? People like that, we feed off each other.''

'Good Times' hitmaker Nile, 60, also told how another of his guitar playing showbiz pals, The Rolling Stones' Keith Richards, was his inspiration to stop taking cocaine and clean up his act in the early 90s.

He said: ''I knew Keith pretty well through [singer Sir] Mick [Jagger]. He'd sobered himself up when I met him by taking an ice-cold bath fully clothed so we could discuss the possibility of me producing the Stones. I thought, 'Are you kidding me? Keith Richards got sober?' If he could do it, I could do it.''

ono, lead singer of U2, was Thursday evening a surprise visit to the festival of "Southern Nights" in Vence.

The Irish artist came to attend the concert Chic featuring Nile Rodgers, and maybe more ...

Bono was greeted by the mayor of the city of arts, Regis Lebigre, as well as the director of the festival Vence, Teo Saavedra.

U2 stars fight for their ‘skycatcher’

City council refused to extend permission for Clarence Hotel revamp

U2 bandmates Bono and The Edge are fighting back against a Dublin City Council decision that blocked their plans for a flying saucer-style roof for the Clarence Hotel.

The Clarence Partnership, which includes the rock stars and developer Paddy McKillen, is taking High Court action against the council for refusing to extend planning permission for a €150 million revamp of the Dublin riverside hotel.

The redevelopment, designed by British “starchitect” Norman Foster, involved demolition of most of the hotel and some adjoining buildings on the quays retaining just their facades, and constructing a much larger hotel around a dramatic atrium and topped by a flying saucer-style roof, called the “skycatcher”. The plan was granted permission by the council in 2007 and was appealed to An Bord Pleanála, which approved the council’s decision in 2008. But the economic crisis intervened and the scheme was never built.

Earlier this year the partnership applied to the council to extend its planning permission. However, the council refused the extension under the new Dublin City Development Plan.

Mick's lucky shirt a flight-risk for U2 legend

OFF THE BALL - COLM PARKINSON – 28 AUGUST 2013

When our esteemed producer (@mccarthymick) tweeted last week that on his way to his top-secret holiday destination he was seated beside Adam Clayton on the plane, we all immediately assumed he'd been bumped up to first class.

Turns out it was an Aer Lingus economy flight and Clayton was slumming it. Of course no airline in the world is bumping up a Clare fan still wearing his jersey 10 days after the semi-final, are they?

History doesn't record what Adam Clayton thought about the frankly 'fruity' smell emanating from Mick's lucky shirt. That second Sunday in September can't come fast enough.

Another reason to celebrate as Larry’s film wins top award

EIMEAR RABBITTE – 05 SEPTEMBER 2013

Larry Mullen Jr is celebrating after his latest film bagged a prestigious award.

The U2 star can add acting to his CV with the news that A Thousand Times Goodnight has won the Grand Prix Jury award at the Montreal Film Festival.

Larry was joined in the film by Oscar-winning actress Juliette Binoche.

The movie, which is co-produced by Irish production company Newgrange Pictures, is based on Binoche's character as a war photographer who is seriously injured in Afghanistan.

Larry was not the only Irish actor involved, with The Tudors star Maria Doyle Kennedy and newcomer Lauryn Canny among the cast.

Mullen plays the role of Tom, who is the husband of Maria Doyle Kennedy's character Theresa. They are friends of the main characters.

Directed by Norwegian filmmaker Erik Poppe, the film premiered in Montreal on Saturday where it received a standing ovation.

“I always want to mix in a little surprise,” said director Poppe on his decision to cast the drummer in the film.

“Since I'm filming in Dublin, I just had to ask him, to add something fresh and raw to the movie.” It is not clear whether the Dublin rocker attend the 37th Montreal World Film Festival.

U2 are currently working on their 13th studio album, due to be ready this month.

However, the band admitted in recent weeks that production had slowed on the album and would postpone its release.
