Stars line up to sing the praises of Dubliners legend Ronnie

Independent.ie

http://dynimg.rte.ie/0000288910dr.jpg

HE has the "greatest voice in the world" and led a folk band that now makes "Nirvana look like girls".

Praise indeed from the leader of the world's top rock band, Bono, for Dublin's greatest trouper Ronnie Drew, the once bearded supremo of Irish music who watched as his peers in the industry paid homage to him and his legacy last night.

A firmament of stars, including Andrea Corr, Shane MacGowan, Sinead O'Connor and U2 took to the stage on the Late Late Show to sing their hearts out in a one-off performance.

Dressed in a sober black suit, with a red patterned scarf around his neck, the beloved founder of the Dubliners said the performance was "great" and "magnificent".

"I'm speechless. I am really knocked out and honoured and grateful. I don't think I deserve it" he told Pat Kenny.

Mr Drew, who has just finished his latest bout of treatment for throat cancer at St Vincent's Hospital, Dublin, said that ever since the song was written he feels stronger.

"I feel stronger and my hair is even growing back," he joked.

The song, entitled 'The Ballad of Ronnie Drew' was composed by Robert Hunter, Bono, The Edge and Simon Carmody and was recorded at Windmill Lane on January 14 and 15.

Wearing his trademark wraparound tinted sunglasses, U2 frontman Bono paid tribute to the "most powerful male voice in the world".

"He is a prime fighter and a fighter always fights harder when the crowd is cheering. That is why we did this," said the rock legend.

'The Ballad of Ronnie Drew' is due to be released in March.

U2 takes the ticket as fans pay the pipers

Sunday March 02 2008

AS if we hadn't seen enough ways to make an extra buck from U2, it seems they've come up with yet another one.

But now they've just been given a hammering for their latest idea -- and "ripping off" fans -- by legendary pop impresario Harvey Goldsmith.

The band, it would seem, have plans to cash in on a new-found way to soak music fans: "reselling" tickets for gigs by auction to get more than their face value.

Goldsmith bumped into Paul McGuinness, the "fifth band member" of U2 (and presumably one of the five mystery employees who were each paid €5m last year by U2's parent company), at a music industry festival in France last month.

McGuinness had just given a speech lambasting internet service providers (ISPs) as thieves for allowing music piracy traffic by their users. With declining album sales internationally, he was doing his job and protecting his band's revenue stream. Fair enough.

But when Goldsmith -- who is one of the world's most famous promoters of live music -- met McGuinness for a drink afterwards and discussed how the internet has effectively legalised ticket touts, he was shocked at the response. So much so that Goldsmith used the conversation as an anecdotal intro for a "keynote address" at the Concert Industry Consortium in Los Angeles.

Speaking about McGuinness, he said: "He accused the heroes of Silicon Valley of being manufacturers of burglary kits. However, when I later had a drink with Paul and asked him about the secondary ticket market, he told me that U2 would run its own auction site.

"So on the one hand he is attacking the internet pirates for stealing his artist's music, but on the other hand he is quite happy for the very same fans to be ripped off by the secondary ticket market -- providing the money, of course, goes to him and his artist."

U2's management company didn't immediately respond to a request for clarification but, given the band's propensity to cash in on every potential revenue stream, it's an obvious one.

Nearly a third of all tickets worldwide are now resold, said Goldsmith, and the number is growing.

"In order for the fan to be true to its hero, [he or she] is stealing music on the one hand," Goldsmith said, "and paying through the nose for a live experience on the other hand.

"This is a mess! Does anybody seriously think that a fan wakes up in the morning wanting to go see Bruce Springsteen with the sole thought of how much more he can pay for the ticket than the price advertised?"

Listen up U2. We like ye, but not that much.

Bono Saves the Children of the World; Idols Help Out, Too

Leah Collins

Published: Tuesday, March 04, 2008

American Idol is saving the children again this year, and where there are celebrities combining their powers for charity and warm-and-fuzzy publicity, Bono can't be far behind. The patron saint of oversized shades will top the lineup of A-list guests appearing on the second annual Idol Gives Back charity show, reports Associated Press.

Reports are unclear as to whether the U2 frontman will be performing at this year's fundraiser, scheduled to take place April 9. But he'll be joined on the guestlist by some requisite Idol-spawned talent, including Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry. Also expected to appear: so many superstars that their combined mega-wattage could power Ryan Seacrest's tanning bed for the next 50 years. Snoop Dogg, Mariah Carey, Fergie, Annie Lennox, John Legend and Miley Cyrus are expected to perform, while less musically inclined A-listers, including Brad Pitt and Reese Witherspoon, are slated to plead for donations. Even more stars are expected to be tacked onto the lineup in coming weeks.

Last year's inaugural Idol Gives Back featured a similarly top-drawer array of celebs - including Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani, Matt Damon, "Borat" and more - and raised approximately $76 million US for charities aiding underprivileged children in the States and abroad.

All in a day's work Bono's words ring true

Irish Independent, March 12, 2008

Anne-Marie Walsh

It is incredible what Bono can fit into a day, let alone a lifetime.

The U2 frontman amazed his fans yesterday when he phoned a 2FM radio show to defend his legendary voice during the school run.

Just hours later, he was appearing in photos ringing a bell with a bunch of German politicians in Berlin.

Bono's busy day began when he took the unusual step of ringing an early morning radio show while dropping his daughter to school.

Fans nearly choked on their breakfast when his unmistakable tones rang out over the airwaves.

The inexhaustible star took umbrage when he heard a report read out that claimed he was no longer up to singing his hit duet with Clannad singer Moya Brennan. Bono and the Donegal trad singer had a big hit with the haunting song "In a Lifetime" in 1986.

The breakfast show crew had been pointing out that Moya's uncle Noel Duggan had said that Bono did not feel he had the voice for the duet anymore.

Bono laughed off the report when he phoned hosts Colm and Jim-Jim and insisted he could still hit the high notes.

"This is inter-band rivalry from those Donegal messers. They've always been putting it up and I'd say it's the uncles, or it could be the brothers Paul or Ciaran. We'll see but there could be trouble," he said.

Listeners initially thought it was a spoof until the singer burst into a jingle for the radio presenters.

Not one to get stuck in a moment for too long, Bono then jetted to Germany to give its politicians an earful.

During a speech to a parliamentary council meeting of the Social Democrats, he said Germany had not been shy about showing the world what values are worth fighting for.

Bono, seen above ringing the bell next to Peter Struck, parliamentary floor leader of the Social Democrats, to start the party's meeting said his visit to Berlin aimed to let them know that using money to fight poverty was helping.

"The good news, help works," Bono said, referring to a 2007 aid package he said could save up to four million lives in the coming three years.

The rock star also praised a debt relief law passed by the government of former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, which Bono said let another 29 million children in Africa attend school.

A spokesperson for U2 confirmed last night that Bono had picked up the phone to 2FM in Dublin yesterday, but was not aware of his more distant, later, appointment.

 wonder what jingle he sang

Planetarium borrows from Pink Floyd, debuts U2 show

Laser patterns and computer imagery were produced in Utah

By David Burger

The Salt Lake Tribune

Article Last Updated: 03/14/2008 10:37:31 AM MDT

Mike Murray, planetarium programs director, talks about the... (Rick Egan/The Salt Lake Tribune)

One of U2's earliest songs is "Lost on a Silent Planet," but at Clark Planetarium the Irish band is anything but.

The songs of U2 are front and center with 21 speakers, six amplifiers and 13,000 watts at the Gateway planetarium's latest Hansen Dome show, "U2," which premieres tonight.

The 43-minute show is not the hyped 3-D film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, but a state-of-the-art extension of the laser-and-lights shows that thrilled Pink Floyd fans in the 1970s.

"It's an evolution," said Mike Murray, programs manager at the planetarium and producer of the new show.

Inside the dome, the 11 songs are not only accompanied by lights and lasers, but animation using the latest in computer-generated imagery and digital technology. (A special screening Wednesday was abandoned midshow because of technical problems, but not before audiences got the chance to hear "Where the Streets Have No Name" while rollercoasting through the solar system, in addition to "Bullet the Blue Sky" featuring imagery of a menacing robot in a post-apocalyptic landscape.)

Fog machines and other special effects are also used, with the producers promising that every show will be different.

The show was developed completely in Utah, a goal of planetarium officials since the planetarium opened at the Gateway five years ago, Murray said. "As soon as

we started surveying audiences, U2 was one of our biggest requests," he said.

Brainstorming what songs to include had planetarium officials asking local radio stations what the most-requested U2 songs were, said Paul Gibbs, lead show presenter.

"A small group of us came up with lists of what songs we couldn't leave out," Gibbs said. "It came out to be four hours long." To promote the new show, organizers are holding a series of competitions tonight.

"U2" premieres tonight at 8 and 9 p.m. at Clark Planetarium,

110 S. 400 West, Salt Lake City. The show continues Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8 p.m., and Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 9 p.m. Tickets are $9, $7 for children, at the planetarium or online at www.clarkplanetarium.org.

Featured songs in the next-generation light and laser show include "Where the Streets Have No Name," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Pride," "I Will Follow," "With or Without You," "Bullet the Blue Sky," "The Fly," "Beautiful Day," Mysterious Ways," "Elevation" and "Vertigo."

Africa Celebrates U2

03/14/2008

.

(PR) On April 1, 2008, Shout! Factory will release In The Name Of Love: Africa Celebrates U2, an album celebrating the music, culture and future of Africa, and an unprecedented musical homage to Bono and U2 for their ongoing humanitarian relief efforts aiding the beloved continent. A portion of the record's proceeds will directly benefit The Global Fund. Interviews with select artists are available upon request.

Produced by Shawn Amos and Paul Heck, In The Name Of Love: Africa Celebrates U2 features Grammy Award-winning/nominated African artists as well as top up-and-coming talents including Angelique Kidjo, Les Nubians, Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, Vieux Farka Touré, Vusi Mahlasela and the Soweto Gospel Choir.

Initially inspired by his work in South Africa while running the Quincy Jones Listen Up Foundation, Amos re-entered the music industry with a heartfelt initiative to cultivate greater awareness of the emerging socio-economic success stories happening within many of the country's regions. Amos, a longtime fan of U2, witnessed Bono's direct philanthropic impact via the launch of the ONE campaign and (RED), and his poignant outspoken public commentary on the immediate financial needs facing Africa.

Amos felt it was essential that African musicians unite and collectively share their voices of pride, accomplishment and appreciation for both their native country and icons like Bono who've substantially embraced the fight against the global AIDS crisis, extreme poverty and the spread of malaria. On December 1, 2006 at the World AIDS Day benefit concert at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Amos approached Red Hot producer Paul Heck about co-producing In The Name Of Love: Africa Celebrates U2. Several notable African artists were performing as part of Heck's live production of Red Hot + Riot: The Music and Spirit of Fela Kuti including Les Nubians, Tony Allen, Cheikh Lô and Keziah Jones. Heck expressed support for the budding project, and quickly became an invaluable partner with his strong ties to various well-established African artists and knowledge of a handful of buzz-worthy upstarts. Together, they consulted with the artists appearing at the World AIDS Day event, bringing Amos's personal dream a step closer to becoming a reality.

"Paul and I wanted to develop an easy entry point for the growing global community where they could get more involved and learn something deeper about Africa," says Amos. "It's really a focus on the key successes of several regions, and the African artists who originate from these areas. It's our goal for the public to learn more about all the good that's happening in Africa. We are trying to garner excitement about the culture, in addition to drawing people toward the struggles of Darfur, etc. This is a project which celebrates Africa!"

12 original interpretations of classic U2 hit songs and some of their more obscure material are featured on In The Name Of Love: Africa Celebrates U2. The collection kicks off with Angelique Kidjo's powerful multilingual cover of the 1991 chart-topper, "Mysterious Ways." Aerosmith's Joe Perry joins Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars for an upbeat, guitar-driven take on "Seconds," a track from U2's third studio release, War (1983). Rising Malian star, Vieux Farka Touré offers a trancy, Sahara Desert blues-influenced rendition of "Bullet The Blue Sky," an absolute standout performance of one of U2's most-played live in concert tunes. Additional highlights include Les Nubians dubbed-out dancefloor ready version of "With Or Without You," the Soweto Gospel Choir's epic a cappella version of "Pride In The Name Of Love," and Tony Allen's Afrobeat translation of "Where The Streets Have No Name Paul Heck notes that, "I was amazed when we approached the artists of how quickly they chose the songs they wanted to do. Many of them grew up listening to U2, and knew the songs so well."

‘YOU ONLY CARE ABOUT AFRICA’

HOME TRUTHS: Stuart Townsend blasts Bono over star’s failure to back Save Tara campaign

Monday March 24 2008

RELATIONS between two of Ireland’s most famous men are set to turn frosty after actor Stuart Townsend lashed out at U2 frontman Bono.

The Irish actor slammed the world-famous singer for failing to step up and help in the fight to save the Hill of Tara.

And to add insult to injury he went on to claim that the humanitarian was more interested in helping those overseas that in getting involved in campaigns in his native Ireland.

“I don’t know why Bono hasn’t gotten involved so far. Maybe it’s because his focus is on Africa and heritage isn’t his thing,” the actor claimed.

Townsend made the remarks while enjoying a romantic weekend in Paris with his partner Charlize Theron (32).

The actor himself has long been involved in the campaign to save the ancient spot and halt construction of the controversial motorway.

FIGHT

And he went on to call on Bono to end his silence on the issue and join the fight.

“Things are really getting desperate now so we really need Bono to say something.

“He’s Bono for God’s sake, he’s Irish and he lives in Ireland.

We really need someone of that magnitude to help,” he added. Townsend said that the campaign was getting the backing of poet Seamus Heaney. The poet and Nobel laureate criticised the Taoiseach and the M3 project saying: “Bertie thinks his legacy is the Celtic Tiger and economic – but his real legacy will be letting them put a motorway through Tara.”

Last year Townsend and Theron visited the site and organised photo opportunities and interviews.

The actor revealed that it was causes like Tara that kept the couple so much in love.

“I suppose part of what attracts Charlize to me is that I’m a space cadet who likes going to places like Tara. She digs it,” he said.

Townsend went on to praise student radical Lisa ‘Squeak’ Feeney, describing the campaigner as a ‘hero’ after she encased herself into a seven metre underground pit for three days in a bid to halt further work near the ancient site.

“It’s a sad reflection on the Irish Government that a young woman has to put her life on the line to protect what our Government should be protecting.

“I think people should join her and the other protestors and get involved . . . none of us have done enough to save Tara,” he added.

     :o :o :o (They're building a motorway through the Hill of Tara? Surely not? :o :o :o

Yep, it is ridiculous. A women has been sleeping in a tunnel in protest for ages, not sure if she is out yet. Bono should get involved though.

Producer Gives Update On U2 Album

By: Don Kaye

U2 has been working on its new album since late February at its recording complex in Dublin, Ireland, where the group has once again turned to longtime producer Daniel Lanois to sit behind the sound console. Lanois recently described how the sessions were going: "It's going well. Very inventive, a lot of hopes and dreams in the room. (Singer) Bono's a hell of a fighter, and as long as he's got me in there, I'll fight along with him, you know. It's just quality, innovation, better songs, choruses that will communicate in a stadium setting...he wants it all. He wants great bass riffs. There's still mystery in the room and they really want to do their best. They want it out for the fall as well."

Lanois recently described the band's new songs as "very hand-played but still very electro" to Sun Media, adding, "Everyone has an appetite for breaking new ground and everybody wants to make a masterpiece."

Lanois has a long history with U2. He teamed with Brian Eno to produce the band's 1984 album The Unforgettable Fire and 1987's multiple-Grammy winner The Joshua Tree. Lanois was also behind the control board for 1991's Achtung Baby and 2000's All That You Can't Leave Behind.

U2 frontman Bono recently raised $42 million for the fight against AIDS through his (RED) charity, which held an art auction last month in New York Thursday (February 14th) to raise money for the Global Fund of the United Nations Foundation, which works to fight AIDS in Africa.

U2 will also team with Paul McCartney, Queen, Keane, Eminem and others this summer for a concert in London's Hyde Park celebrating Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday.

U2's Fab Four tribute named best cover song

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

U2 have topped a poll by American rock bible 'Rolling Stone' to find the best cover of a Beatles' song.

The magazine asked readers to vote after complaints about some disastrous covers of classic Lennon/McCartney songs over two weeks on the talent show America Idol.

The Dublin band's version of 'Helter Skelter' -- originally on The Fab Four's 'White Album' -- narrowly edged out Oasis's version of 'I Am The Walrus' for supremacy.

It also beat out some stiff competition from Joe Cocker, 'With A Little Help From My Friends' and Fiona Apple's 'Across The Universe'.

The song is the opening track on U2's live album 'Rattle & Hum', released in 1988.

THE RICH LIST ENTERTAINERS

Sunday March 30 2008

1. U2 €900m

U2 Ltd, set up to deal with royalty payments, has been moved to the Netherlands, which has no tax on royalties, six months ahead of the imposition of a cap on tax breaks for artists in Ireland.

The band, which has traditionally split earnings equally among Bono, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen, the Edge and manager Paul McGuinness, has begun to divide up its vast portfolio among their respective families.

Last October Geranger, a consortium consisting of Sean Mulryan's Ballymore Properties, Patrick McKillen and August Partners (representing U2), were selected as preferred bidders for the U2 Tower. Bono backs a private equity fund, Elevations Partners, which owns a $300m stake in Forbes magazine.

2. Michael Flatley €590m

The superhoofer, 50 next year, has amassed a small fortune from Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, and his latest offering, Celtic Tiger. The former labourer is resident in Monaco, but also owns a 200-acre estate and castle in Co Cork, worth about €65m. He has a wide range of investments.

3. Moya Doherty and John McColgan €172m

The couple continue to make big money from Riverdance, the show they created for the interval of the 1985 Eurovision song contest.

Their musical, The Pirate Queen, did not do well having its Broadway run cut short last July. The Pirate Queen is said to have been the most expensive musical ever, costing €20m. The couple have other investments.

4. Enya €128m

Eithne Ni Bhraonain hasn't looked back since she left the family's band, Clannad, a quarter of a century ago. One of just four entertainers in the 'real' top 100, the 46-year-old has sold over 70 million albums without touring, a phenomenon dubbed "enyanomics".

Film soundtracks, notably for Lord of the Rings, and a US and UK No 1 with P Diddy have kept the bank manager happy.

5. Van Morrison €74m

Morrison, 62, from Belfast, who has sold over 20m albums during his singing career, is on the verge of re-entering our top 100, just €1m short of the €75m entry fee. This month he released Keep it Simple, his first album in two years. Last year saw no less than three compilations released, with Still on Top -- The Greatest Hits, reaching No 2 in the UK charts.

6. Cranberries €60m

Singer Dolores O'Riordan has no record contract but in the past few months has sold 600,000 copies of her new solo album Are You Listening?

The band's 1993 album, Everybody Else is Doing It, So Why Can't We? remains Ireland's best-selling album after U2's The Joshua Tree. Their music features regularly in Holywood films.

7. Chris de Burgh €59m

The singer has cleverly invested money from 40 million album sales, notably in property. De Burgh's latest album The Storyman performed better than expected.

8. Graham Norton €42m

Norton's So Television production company, in which he has a 50 per cent stake, is worth over €45m. BBC paid the 45-year-old Cork man €15m to switch from Channel 4.

9. Colin Farrell €38m

Farrell's most lucrative role to date was Alexander the Great, accounting for about a quarter of his total wealth. The 31-year-old Dubliner, who auditioned for Boyzone, 'starred' in Ballykissangel, as well as, unwittingly, on the website dirtycolin.com, along with former girlfriend, the Playboy model Nicole Narain. He is currently filming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

10. Westlife €36m

Signed a decade ago by Simon Cowell and managed by Louis Walsh, Westlife have now sold 40m records. They make as much from merchandising as they do from record sales or concerts. They released their eighth album in November, which reached No 1 in the UK charts and was the fifth most successful album of the year. The band will play Croke Park this year to mark their 10th anniversary.
