U2 guitarist splashes out on £12m yacht

Wednesday, 24 September 2008

U2 guitarist The Edge has revealed how he has fulfilled a dream by buying a £12m luxury yacht.

It was recently claimed that Bono had splashed out a small fortune on the Cyan, a 140-foot yacht with six cabins and accommodation for 12 guests.

But Edge spoke out last night to the Irish Independent to put the record straight.

"It's not Bono's yacht at all, it's mine. Bono doesn't know a thing about boats," he said.

"For years it was a dream of mine to own a yacht, but to be honest, it was a bit out of my league. So myself and a few friends got together, chipped in, and bought the Cyan. I don't know where the story that Bono owns it came from."

And Edge's wife Morleigh Steinberg has spent the past few months in the south of France overseeing a total redesign of the yacht, which included a new paint job.

Edge added: "She's now been totally refurbished and we're really happy with her. Morleigh has totally overseen all the work onboard and it's great. So it's now a really hip ship!"

The Cyan has a long list of luxuries, including an on-deck jacuzzi, a state-of-the-art music system, a swimming platform, large dining area and a luxury bar. It was built in 1997 by Codesca Yachts and commanded a charter price of between e140,000 and e175,000, depending on how long it was being hired for.

Edge and Bono own a luxury villa beside the beach in Eze-sur-mer on the French Riviera, where neighbours include superstars Elton John, Tina Turner and Michael Flatley.

While Bono has often been snapped on the beach or entertaining friends during his annual break, Edge and his family are very rarely pictured on their holidays there.

Edge also owns a home in Killiney in south county Dublin, as well as a property near Malibu in America.

And the guitar ace, who recently starred in a documentary film with guitar greats Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and Jack White of The White Stripes, is now dividing his time between enjoying the yacht and finishing the next album.

A spokeswoman for the band revealed: "There won't be much public activity from the band until next year. They're still perfecting the album, which won't be released until next year."

And she said that their office was receiving constant queries from fans and reporters alike over whether the band would play Croke Park, the Phoenix Park or the O2 venue as part of next year's world tour.

"The tour plans haven't been confirmed at all, but they certainly will be playing Dublin. It is their hometown after all," she added.

Bono and Geldof sign up Zapatero for poverty reduction campaign

Sunday 28 September 2008, by Corinne/Dead

U2 singer Bono and former Boomtown Rats frontman, Bob Geldof, have signed up Spanish president José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to champion the ’One’ campaign to halve extreme poverty by 2015.

At a meeting at UN headquarters in New York earlier today, Mr Zapatero agreed to propose at the next European Council meeting in Brussels on October 15th that the UE releases the (EU)1,000 million euros it has saved out of the Common Agricultural Policy fund to support farmers in fifteen African countries.

During the meeting, Bono and Geldof outlined their plans to focus global attention on the situation in Africa, using the 2012 World Cup to gain maximum attention. The biggest concert ever staged on the continent is being organised, and Mr Zapatero was told that, among others, Antonio Banderas, Penelope Cruz and Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas have already pledged their support.

After less positive reactions from a number of other European political leaders previously approached, and bowled over by Mr Zapatero’s enthusiasm for the initiative, Bono reportedly said during the meeting that he wished he were Spanish.

Gandhi, Jolie's pictures to feature in new Vogue-style Bible

Posted: 2:28p.m IST, October 10, 2008

London, October 10 (ANI): Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela's pictures have been selected to illustrate the importance of doing good deeds in the glossy coffee table tome entitled Bible Illuminated: The Book.

Swedish ad man Dag Soderberg has decided to repackage the book in the style of Vogue.

The book will also feature pictures of Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie and U2 frontman Bono.

The publishers selected these personalities after asking the Swedish public which famous figures in modern times represented goodness and compassion.

Images chosen for the book also include a picture featuring a shirtless male model striding through the waves, and a black-and-white close-up of a couple about to kiss.

The New Testament version of the book is published in the US at the end of this month, and there are plans for a UK release in the coming months.

Its publishers have revealed that The Book accounted for a 50 per cent rise in Sweden's Bible sales when it was released in 2007 in the country.

Soderberg said that his aim was to make the Bible more accessible.

Most people have issues with the Bible. They have never gotten into it. They don't find it accessible. But it's our history, our heritage. And for most of us, we relate to it more than we think. Religious or not, it shapes much of our moral codes, the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

His goal is to make a version of the Bible that people want to pick up, instead of hide away or just place on a bookshelf. (ANI)

U2 Becomes Shareholder of Live Nation

(Oct 17) U2 will become a shareholder of Live Nation. As part of U2's 12 year deal, it will receive an estimated $19 million worth of Live Nation shares; the rock band signed with the concert promotion company earlier this year.

Los Angeles-based Live Nation yesterday (Oct. 16) registered 1.56 million shares to U2 in a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The agreement between U2 and Live Nation, announced in March, includes worldwide touring, merchandising, and the band's U2.com Web site. The deal, however, is not a true 360-degree pact, as there is no publishing component and the band retains its relationship with Universal Music to release music.

U2's 2005-2007 Vertigo tour grossed close to $400 million, the second highest ever. The industry assumption is that the contract with Live Nation will generate more than a billion dollars in grosses over the course of the contract.

Over the last few years, Live Nation has also entered into multi-rights deals with Madonna, Jay-Z, Nickelback and Shakira.

U2's Bono, Edge to perform at Monk Institute fete

Published October 17, 2008 02:10 By Richard Tafoya / LiveDaily Contributing Editor

U2's Bono and The Edge have been added to the announced performer's lineup for the annual Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz event at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, on Oct. 26 .

The duo will take the stage as part of a concert lineup honoring B.B. King, to whom they will also present the organization's Founder's Award, according to a Monk Institute spokesperson. The pairing sets the stage for a possible re-creation of U2's performance debut with King in November of 1987, where they unveiled the U2-penned song "When Love Comes To Town," captured for the band's 1988 film "Rattle and Hum." The song has been a staple at King concerts since then.

The event's other honoree, Microsoft co-Founder Paul G. Allen, will be presented with the 2008 Herbie Hancock Humanitarian Award. In 2007, the Monk Institute inaugurated the Hancock award with an all-star event honoring Hancock and featuring Sting, Joni Mitchell, Jamie Foxx, Chris Botti and others, also at the Kodak.

This year's Monk event , showcasing performances by both King and Hancock, is titled the "Two American Classics Gala Concert" and will also feature jazz and blues mainstays Terence Blanchard, Terri Lynne Carrington, Robert Cray, Keb' Mo', Wayne Shorter, Cassandra Wilson and others. The show is a benefit for public school music education programs in Los Angeles, New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta.

King recently turned 83 and rolled out an aggressive tour schedule that will keep him on the road through the end of the year in support of his latest release, "One Kind Favor," which hit stores in August.

U2 are to announce tour dates in the new year

having signed a £10 million tour deal

Irish band U2 are set to announce an extensive tour of big venues across the UK when they take their new tour on the road early next year.

Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen whose last album was 2004's 'How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb' have been putting together new tracks and are due to release a new album, possibly entitled, 'No Line On The Horizon in 2009.

The band have apparently been given a £10 million advance in a massive new tour deal which they have signed with concert promoters Live Nation, for the next 12 years.

The band will share the concert revenue with Live Nation and it is is estimated they could make over £500 million from live shows over the 12 year period.

The new contract will see them continue to record with Mercury Records but tour with Live Nation.

There's going to be a lot of big tours taking place next year with Oasis, AC/DC, Metallica, Coldplay, and now U2 all all staging gigantic outdoor gigs. Will they all be successful with the credit crunch setting in?

By Simon Reynolds, Entertainment Reporter

Echo And The Bunnymen have blasted U2, calling them "boring" and "spud peelers".

Frontman Ian McCulloch told Flaunt that he couldn't fathom the Irish band's success.

He said: "It was like, 'Wanted: Spud-peeler who can sing.' And they were like, 'Yes! I can peel the spuds and you can tune the guitars.'

"I knew from day one, as soon as I heard them... f**king hell. It's like, 'Let's all get together and be in the music biz.'"

The Liverpool group's guitarist Will Sergeant added: "I still haven't got one U2 record in my house... To me, they were just boring. They're a bit goody two-shoes."

Echo And The Bunnymen's hits include 'The Cutter', 'The Killing Moon' and 'Nothing Lasts Forever'.

How will Bono find what he's looking for in this enormous bedroom?

http://i33.tinypic.com/10r3bf5.jpg http://i33.tinypic.com/idhdg3.jpg

An artist's impression of Bono and Ali Hewson's house and new room.

By Cormac Murphy

Wednesday October 22 2008

IT'S a bedroom fit for a king ... or for a pint-sized rock star.

Bono has unveiled plans for a new master bedroom that is as big as an average semi-detached home.

The 130sqm boudoir is complete with his and hers en suites, matching walk-in wardrobes, an adjoining study and a balcony with views of Dublin Bay.

The U2 frontman has applied for the massive bedroom for the palatial Killiney home he shares with wife Ali and their five children.

Wardrobes

The couple have applied to Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown Co Council to add a completely new second floor to include an en suite master bedroom and his and her wardrobes.

They also want to add a lower ground floor conservatory to their house, Temple Hill, on Vico Road.

The proposed conservatory will be accessed through the kitchen and living room.

Bono, who has applied to the council using his real name, Paul Hewson, is seeking to have a terrace at second-floor level around the full perimeter of the house.

If permission is granted, the changes will make the most of the U2 singer's amazing sea views.

Designed by Colin Jennings Architect, the plans show that the terrace will be accessed through a new en suite master bedroom as well as an adjoining en suite study.

Posted on the council's website, the drawings reveal that the superstar is making provision for considerable wardrobe space.

The new second floor is to take the place of the existing pitched roof.

A decision by the council is due at the end of next month.

The application comes only months after Bono and Ali were granted permission for a small performance studio in the grounds of their home.

As part of the same application, they were also given permission to build a gardener's shelter, containing changing facilities, a small kitchen area and a bathroom.

Plans

Liam Brophy of CMB Design Group submitted these plans.

Mr Brophy stated in the letter of application: "The proposed locations of the two temporary structures are specifically designed to minimise their impact on both the subject site, as well as existing vistas to and from the site.

"The structure to be used for recreational purposes is located within a stand of existing trees on the site and is outside the scope of the primary views afforded to the main house in its current location.

"These trees were planted by the owners 15 to 20 years ago. In order to facilitate the new temporary structure, a number of trees will be required to be removed.

"However, only the less mature trees in this location will be removed with the majority of existing trees retained, allowing the structure to be shielded by these trees in this location.

"Every effort has been made to minimise the impact these structures will have on the existing house as well as on the site in general."

Poverty campaign inspires new U2 song, says Bono

Thu 23 Oct 2008, 4:35 GMT

By Lesley Wroughton

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - When 116 million people recently stood up against worldwide poverty, their coordinated cry failed to make big headlines -- but they did inspire Irish rocker and activist Bono to write a new song for his group U2.

In an interview with Reuters on Wednesday, Bono said the Stand Up and Take Action campaign in 131 countries had moved him to start creating a song called "Stand Up".

"It's not finished yet but it's inspired by this concept of stand up. It's a little diamond, though," Bono said, speaking by telephone from Los Angeles.

"It's not a 'let's hold hands and the world is a better place sort of song.' It's more kick down the door of your own hypocrisy," he said.

Organizers said the 116 million people who called on global leaders not to forget their promise to reduce world poverty and hunger by 2015, represented nearly two percent of the world's population and was a Guinness World Record "for the biggest mass mobilization on a single issue".

World leaders set a series of agreed targets on poverty, education, health, equality and malnutrition known as Millennium Development Goals or MDGs, eight years ago.

But developing countries fear rich nations will use the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression as an excuse to scale down their promises.

African leaders have already accused rich donor nations of not keeping to their aid commitments, which has become critical to combat the effects of higher world food prices.

"Although they were not a legal contract, and we wish they were, there is a moral contract that was made," Bono said.

"To break a promise to yourself, to your partner, to your family, a politician to his constituents, are all bad things to do -- but it's a heinous crime to make a promise to the poorest most vulnerable people on earth and break it. That's just not acceptable," he said.

He said while the MDGs may be "the worst acronym in the history of activism," the Stand Up and Take Action events around the world on Oct 17 to 19 showed that people knew what they stand for.

"The numbers show that people are aware that those promises were made and why politicians can't think 'oh we can get away with it because no one really knows about it'" Bono said.

For years, Bono has used his celebrity to raise money and draw attention to global poverty and highlight how aid, when used properly, can help prevent and treat diseases like malaria and HIV/AIDS.

"It is dreadful to think that we could take the foot off the pedal at our end and they run out of road on theirs," he said of concerns that less aid will slow Africa's progress.

Still, Bono said the region had demonstrated significant economic potential after several years of strong economic growth, led by a new generation of leaders.

"I have faith in Africans who are becoming very adept at this balancing act between necessary aid flows and realizing that business, commerce and investment can take you out of catastrophe," said Bono.

THE WRITE STUFF: Bono to pen daily newspaper op-ed pieces

Apparently, completing U2's oft-delayed new album and gearing up for the likely world tour to follow aren't enough to keep Bono busy, which may be why the Irish rock legend has agreed to write six to 10 op-ed pieces for the New York Times next year.

The twist is that -- according to Times publisher Abe Rosenthal -- Bono won't be writing about AIDS, global warming, world debt relief or any of the other major issues near and dear to the singer's heart. Instead, he'll be writing op-ed pieces about ... music. (We can see it now: Bono on "Time To Re-Assess: Mullets Are Good for Rock 'N' Roll" and "Why More Bands Should Use Giant Silver Lemons On Stage").

However, according to Times' spokeswoman Catherine J. Mathis: "We have asked Bono to write an occasional column for the paper next year, covering a range of subjects, but are still finalizing the details." There's also disagreement about whether Bono, who can probably afford to buy several Third World countries, will be paid for his opinion pieces. "No," says Rosenthal; "Maybe," says Kathy McKiernan, a spokeswoman for the ONE Campaign, Bono's charitable organization (although any pay Bono receives would go to charity, she stressed).

Bono is no stranger to newspapers. In 2006, he served as the editor for a day of the English newspaper The Observer. Meanwhile, Times publisher Rosenthal has indicated he is interested in getting Queen guitarist Brian May, who recently earned his doctorate degree in astrophysics, to also write a periodic piece for the Times.

Now, we're not sure that getting middle-aged rock stars to write opinion pieces is the best way for daily newspapers -- the San Diego Union-Tribune included -- to draw more young readers. But we are intrigued by the wealth of music luminaries with local roots who perhaps could be enlisted to write for us, like, say, Tom Waits, Carlos Santana, Diamanda Galas, El Vez and, of course, Eddie Vedder.

But that's just us. What current or former San Diego musicians would you like to see write editorials and opinion pieces for this, or any other, publication? Jason Mraz? Tom DeLonge? Jewel? As I Lay Dying? Jose Sinatra?

U2’s Edge rattles Malibu peace

John Harlow, Los Angeles

IN THE mountains above the billionaire’s beach town of Malibu, the rock star known as the Edge has been introducing his children to nature. They have rambled among rare flowers, looking for bobcats and coyote, and have named a familiar redtailed hawk Chestnut. It is an idyllic escape for U2’s modestly born guitarist.

Now the Edge, aka David Howell Evans, who was born in Barking, east London, and grew up in Malahide, near Dublin, wants to build a dream house on a peak 900ft above the Pacific coastline.

It is extravagantly designed with a cascade of 19 overlapping roofs intended to resemble bronze leaves being blown along the ridge.

However, some residents of Malibu believe this is where the 47-year-old guitarist’s love affair with nature ends. Plans to fund the house, called Leaves in the Wind, by building four other mansions in an environmentally sensitive area protected by the California Coastal Commission, a watchdog agency, have provoked disapproval.

In a town where celebrities erect 60-room Tuscan villas, replica Buddhist temples and Gothic castles without raising too many eyebrows, the Edge’s ambitions are judged to be at odds with the high moral standing of his band, which campaigns vigorously for good causes including protecting the poor and the environment.

In particular, he faces opposition from Jefferson Wagner, 56, a former Ralph Lauren model, a surfboard shop owner, Hollywood explosives adviser – and the next mayor of Malibu.

Wagner, known as Zuma Jay after his shop, and his girlfriend, Candace Brown, are credited with having persuaded the Edge to drop an earlier plan to build on a nearby canyon called Latigo.

Zuma Jay follows celebrities such as Martin Sheen, the actor, into the post of mayor this September, and has said he will challenge the Edge’s latest project.

A fan of U2, he says he is disappointed at the musician’s apparent disregard for flora and fauna. “This is not what Malibu is about. These kind of places are ego run riot,” he said.

His girlfriend went further: “The Edge has more money than God – why does he need to spoil the mountains for everyone?

“And when you see what U2 stand for, there is a double standard between their private and public lives.”

Another local, Jim Smith, who clashed with the coastal commission when he built his own home at the foot of the Edge’s mountain two decades ago, says he bumped into the musician inspecting the peak.

“The Edge was very friendly – said he wanted to be a good neighbour. His kids love it up here. But the plans for these houses, which could sell for $40m each, will deface the mountainside,” said Smith, a building project manager.

“This is not what good neighbours do in Malibu. He had the opportunity to be a local hero, but we are very saddened by his actions. I know what he told me, but his actions are so loud I cannot hear what he is saying any more.”

The Edge was a regular visitor to Malibu even before he married his second wife, Morleigh Steinberg, a dancer, in 2002. She is from nearby Santa Monica and is determined to keep their children Sian, 11, and Levi, 9, in touch with their Californian roots.

Representatives of the Edge, who paid $9.2m (£6.4m) for the site, are to put his case to the coastal commission in June.

Last Friday Jim Vandenberg, his project manager, insisted that Malibu had nothing to worry about.

“The Edge will be building his home and these other houses to the highest environmental standards,” he said. “The Edge and his wife love this area. They want to make it their home, not damage it, and he is very eager now to get on with building. It’s going to be a wonderful home for his family.”

U2 to give €9m of tour profits to charity

Monday, 30 March 2009

Rockers U2 will donate an estimated €9m of their summer tour profits to charity, it was revealed last night.

The artists will give away 100pc of their income from VIP auction ticket sales at up to 100 worldwide concerts.

Up to 600 stage-front tickets per gig are being sold off via auction, with minimum starting bids of between €95 and €1,015.

Every cent band members Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr earn from the sale of tickets in the 'Red Zone' will go to charity.

The charity-style partnership Global Fund, which helps fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, will benefit from a large donation.

Other good causes expected to receive payouts are charities focusing on Africa, the core of Bono's campaigning.

U2's precise cut of their concerts' gross takings is a closely guarded secret, but is thought to be upwards of 75pc. Promoter Live Nation also takes a cut, along with the venue.

A U2 spokeswoman said: "All of U2's income raised from the auction of Red Zone tickets will be donated to charity."

No U2 on the horizon as fans rattled by hoax

Even better than the real thing - U2opia frontman Lee Craddock dupes eager U2 fans gathering to hear the real thing

By Ralph Riegel

Thursday April 02 2009

HUNDREDS of U2 fans were duped yesterday in an elaborate April Fool's Day prank when they rushed to a shopping centre believing the band was playing a surprise rooftop concert.

The prank -- organised by Cork radio station RedFM -- fooled listeners, with early morning details of the impromptu concert and live news bulletins during which U2 were clearly heard playing in the background.

The station also carried audio clips of "U2" playing a rooftop concert at Blackpool Shopping Centre. But, in reality, it was the tribute band U2opia.

Gesture

The station claimed the real band wanted to make a gesture to Cork, as they are not playing a gig there this summer, and that they had decided to recreate their famous concert from the rooftop of a Los Angeles liquor store in the late 1980s.

That concert has gone down in rock'n'roll legend, but this one will only go down in Red FM legend.

On first hearing of the U2 gig yesterday, fans rushed to the shopping centre from all over Cork city and county, with reports of some people running out of work to catch the impromptu gig and others abandoning their shopping to get to Blackpool.

By mid-morning, almost 500 people had gathered around the shopping centre to try and catch a glimpse of their rock heroes. The gardai and Cork fire brigade, who had been alerted in advance to the hoax, played along, and it was later broadcast that the concert was being shut down on health and safety grounds.

But hundreds of fans continued to mill around outside the shopping centre as a large crane hoist was used to bring security personnel to the roof, lending credence to the suggestion that Bono, The Edge, Larry and Adam were being told to pull the plug and get off the roof.

Fans admitted they were totally taken in by the prank, and one woman said she had driven 30 miles just to try to get to see U2.

Red FM and Blackpool Shopping Centre said they were taken aback by the reaction, but added that those duped had taken it in good humour.
