U2 star The Edge donates guitar to Stuart Adamson fundraiser

Apr 6 2009 Joanne Curran

ROCKER The Edge has pledged his support to a fundraiser in honour of late Big Country singer Stuart Adamson.

The U2 star has donated one of his prized guitars to a charity auction being held by Adamson's family.

It's in aid of the Children's Hospice Association Scotland and the youth set-up at Adamson's beloved Dunfermline Football Club.

And the gift from The Edge - a longtime friend of fellow guitarist Adamson, who died in Hawaii in 2001, aged 43 - will boost the fundraiser by £8000. His Gibson Epiphone guitar is expected to fetch at least that when it is auctioned on eBay.

Its sale will come after Saturday's main auction and tribute to Adamson, when murals of him, created by local schoolkids, will be unveiled at Dunfermline's home ground.

Adamson, who achieved international fame with The Skids and Big Country, would have been 51 on Saturday.

Dunfermline, nicknamed the Pars, and their fans are also involved in the event. Adamson's musician daughter Kirsten, lead singer The Gillyflowers, got in touch with The Edge.

She said: "I couldn't believe it when the guitar turned up. It's pretty cool.

"The Edge has signed it and has used it for a few gigs. My dad really had a lot of respect for The Edge and U2, so this is just a fantastic tribute." The Edge had one condition, though - that some money raised goes a charity he co-founded to help musicians struggling in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Adamson's son Callum added: "My dad would have been extremely honoured by this gesture. He was a working class man with a burning ambition to become a successful musician.

"His devotion to the Pars was, at times, as strong as the urge to make music." Dunfermline supporter Colin Gourlay said: "For some time, there's been a strong desire to permanently express the affection and respect we all have for Stuart.

"Many wish to honour his memory and articulate the high esteem in which Stuart's legacy is held among us." Adamson had been suffering personal problems in the months before his suicide in a Honolulu hotel room.

Bono Favors Performance Rights Act

April 20, 2009

U2's Bono is the latest artist to speak out in favor of the Performance Rights Act, which would call for radio stations to pay roylaties to artists for playing their music. Bono joins other supporters such as Smashing Pumpkins founder Billy Corgan, will.i.am, Sheryl Crow, Herbie Hancock and Emmylou Harris, who have all joined the musicFIRST Coalition on Capitol Hill to lobby in favor of the Performance Rights Act.

Bono released a statement on the matter via musicFIRST, which is an advocacy group for artist rights. "While we have many friends at radio, and appreciate the many things that radio has done for our band over the years, we believe it’s only fair that when radio makes money by playing a recording artist's music and selling advertising, the recording artist should be compensated just as songwriters are already," said Bono. "This is a principle accepted by radio broadcasters in virtually every country in the world. The music business is in a state of freefall at the moment, and while, thankfully, this no longer really affects us - there are many young recording artists out there who can no longer earn a living from the sale of their music, or from touring or selling merchandise... yet they remain a vital part of radio playlists throughout the USA. They should not be denied their fair share. In this time of so much positive change coming from Washington, we hope this bill will be embraced and become the law."

In response to Bono's statement, NAB EVP Dennis Wharton commented, "The irony is that it will be the less-established performers who will be hurt most by a performance tax. If radio stations are forced to pay to play music, program directors will be less likely to take a chance playing unknown artists and will instead stick with established musicians like Bono. New artists and niche formats will suffer, and Bono and Britney Spears will become wealthier."

The House Judiciary Committee has been holding hearings on the legislation, and numerous broadcasters have testified that radio is facing an extremely difficult time in this economy as it is, and enacting a performance royalty would be devastating to the industry.

U2's The Edge: Malibu's Least Wanted

E! Online, Apr 17, 2009 12:32 pm PDT

You might say The Edge is having boundary issues. The U2 guitarist's plans to build five mountaintop mansions in Malibu with fantastic oceanside views is facing fierce opposition from some famous NIMBYs concerned the homes will be an environmental catastrophe.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the proposed project would be built above homes belonging to the likes of Dick Van Dyke, Kelsey Grammer and James Cameron and would require some extensive and tricky engineering, including extension of a road down a rugged elevation, grading 70,000 cubic yards of hillside and installing water lines.

"The downside of this is a permanently scarred mountainside for the benefit of a very few that for many years all will view," Jefferson Wagner, a Malibu councilman, told the newspaper. "For somebody so revered even to be orchestrating this type of development in such a sensitive area is hypocritical."

The Edge, whose real name is David Evans, promises development on the properties will address those concerns with care.

"My family and I love Malibu, having maintained a residence here for more than a decade," he told the Times. "These homes will be some of the most environmentally sensitive ever designed in Malibu—or anywhere in the world. I'm disappointed that certain critics either don't have the facts or have ulterior motives."

The Grammy-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has "certificates of compliance" from Los Angeles County establishing that the land he owns meets all legal requirements.

Edge added that he and Irish real estate investor Derek Quinlan plan to take up residence in two of the homes and most likely flip the other three, which has rankled some neighbors whose peace and quiet will be rattled by all the building.

The California Coastal Commission is expected to review the environmental impact of the project in June.

This is not the first fight Evans has found himself in with neighbors.

He and the rest of U2 came under fire in their hometown of Dublin for now defunct plans to build the so-called U2 Tower, a proposed skyscraper in the heart of the city that would've been the tallest in Ireland. Preservationists claimed the $220 million project would have resulted in the tearing down of four adjacent historic buildings.

Recession takes a 14pc bite out of U2's €548m fortune

By Fergus Black

Friday April 24 2009

IRELAND'S greatest export U2 have seen their wealth drop by 14pc as the recession bites.

And the fortune of 'super hoofer' Michael Flatley has plunged by more than a third, according to the latest millionaires rich list.

But there was better news for singer Enya, golfer Padraig Harrington and footballers Damien Duff and Robbie Keane who also feature among the top millionaires.

Described as the definitive guide to the fortunes of the 250 richest people in Ireland and the 1,000 richest in Britain, the Sunday Times Rich List, will be published this weekend.

The list charts the dramatic falls and some surprising rises in the value of the assets in both countries' wealthiest individuals, but a sneak preview gives some indication of the rise and fall in some of the fortunes of well-known stars.

Despite re-igniting his career co-hosting 'Superstars of Dance' on American TV, Michael Flatley has seen his fortune drop by 34pc in a year.

This year Flatley is ranked 27th in Ireland's richest 250. According to the rich list, his wealth is down from €413m in 2008 to €273m because of the fall in value of his property and investments.

Also seeing a drop in its wealth is the band U2. Its career earnings and the residual value of its back catalogue fell by 14pc to €470m from €548m in 2008, mainly because of the global slump in asset values. The band is currently ranked 12th in Ireland on the list.

However, there was happier news for singer Enya. The success of her latest album, 'And Winter Came' has seen the Donegal singer rise up the Rich List to become one of the 100 richest people in Ireland.

Ranked this year at 85, Enya is now worth €93m, up 5pc on 2008 when her fortune was worth €89m and she was ranked 122. Her career album sales total €72m.

Also making the UK top 50 list of music millionaires is Van 'The Man' Morrison. While his personal wealth fell 9pc to €56m, the Belfast-born Grammy award winner jumped five places on the Rich List to 39th.

One of the few music millionaires to see a rise in his fortune was 'X Factor' judge Simon Cowell.

Ranked 15th among the top 50 music millionaires his personal fortune rose by 7pc to €133m this year, up €9m on his 2008 earnings.

Former Formula 1 (F1) racing driver Eddie Irvine remains the richest sportsman in Ireland despite the fact that his fortune has dropped by a third.

U2, Take That 'Set For Formula 1 Grand Prix Gigs'

* by Jason Gregory

* Tuesday, April 28, 2009

U2 and Take That are among the stars set to perform at Formula 1 Grand Prix races this summer, it’s been reported.

Both bands' record label, Universal, is believed to have signed a deal with the sport’s owners for its acts to appear at various races across Europe.

The agreement also includes “stars from the world of movies, sport and fashion”, according to the Sun newspaper.

Universal’s chairman Lucian Grainge said the collaboration would create “a groundbreaking, all-new entertainment spectacular”.

Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone added: “I’ve always said we are in the entertainment business and this deal marks a new dimension for Formula 1.

“I have high hopes for it.”

Girls Aloud and the Pussycat Dolls, whose lead singer Nicole Scherzinger dates world champion Lewis Hamilton, could also perform as part of the deal.

U2's Bono interviews George Clooney

U2 frontman Bono has interviewed actor George Clooney for an upcoming CNN special, entitled 'The World's Most Influential People.'

The one-hour presentation will be a special edition of the news network's Anderson Cooper 360°, according to TV Guide.

The show, anchored by Cooper, will be aired in tandem with the release of Time magazine's 100 special issue. The programme will incorporate interviews with the publication's recipients conducted by fellow influential honorees.

Time magazine asked Bono to write the profile, and CNN shot the interview for the special.

"You recently slept with someone that I have a crush on. Tell me about that?", was reportedly one of his first questions Bono put to George Clooney and it apparently set the tone of their nearly 40 minute interview.

The show airs in the US today.

Wondering who's that?

Bono making new bid to extend his mansion

PLANS: Bono and wife Ali have applied for further changes to their Killiney mansion

By Jane Last

Monday May 11 2009

Bono's ambitious plans to extend his Killiney mansion are before the council again.

The U2 rocker was given the green light to proceed with the extension to his family's Killiney home last January.

However, Bono and his wife Ali have published a notice stating their intention to apply for permission for further development at their Temple Hill mansion.

The couple, who used the names Mr & Mrs Paul Hewson in their planning notice published last week, said the development will consist of modifications to their previously approved plans.

These plans were approved by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council in November -- despite an objection by An Taisce which would have entitled the organisation to appeal the decision to An Bord Pleanala.

However, An Taisce never filed notice to appeal by the closing date, in January, and Bono was allowed to proceed.

The couple's latest plans are for a below-ground plant room to the west of the main house.

Last November, Bono and Ali were given permission to add a new second floor to their home.

The couple have also been given the green light to add a lower ground-floor conservatory.

Dun Laoghaire planners attached nine conditions, including that a brochure showing a colour sample of the proposed roof be submitted. The new second floor is to take the place of the existing pitched roof.

In its objection, An Taisce said that the extension would "distract" from singer Enya's Ayesha Castle and Killiney Hill Obelisk.

They also contended that Bono's house, Temple Hill, is within a conservation area. It added that "a more sympathetic extension [to Temple Hill] with a similar design and finish to the original house should be considered".

The application revealed Bono rejected the idea of demolishing his home when deciding on plans for a revamp.

The rock star reviewed a proposal to tear down his mansion and construct a new house. However, he and Ali decided demolition was inappropriate and were "keen to retain the existing building".

Bono To Play Charity Dominoes At Cannes

May 15, 2009 by Tim Saunders

U2 singer Bono is to co-host a charity event with a difference at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival on May 18.

Bono will join Penelope Cruz and director Pedro Almodovar at the Hollywood Domino tables to benefit The Global Fund, which raises cash to further AIDS research. Along with Charlize Theron, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, the stars will take part in a game that has taken Hollywood by storm.

Hollywood Domino is a new take on a very old game originally invented in China over 400 years ago. The new version was developed after two young entrepreneurs – Inge Theron and Daya Fernandez – met in LA during the Oscars. It was not long before a select group of celebrity friends including Salma Hayek, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher caught onto the trend and began to meet regularly to play.

“Beating the credit crunch has never been so much fun,“ said Inge Theron. “Staying in has definitely become the new going out. ‘Hollywood Domino’ is a fun and exciting parlour game that you cannot help being absorbed by. It is strategic and highly addictive, and brings the glamour of the Hollywood Hills into your living room.”

The game is available for purchase from Amazon.com, Wal-Mart, Toys R Us, and other selected retailers.

U2 backs campaign to raise awareness of MS

Rock group U2 will this week support the first global awareness campaign to spotlight multiple sclerosis.

World MS Day, to be launched on Wednesday, will involve more than 160 events in 51 countries.

U2's contribution is their hit song Beautiful Day, which is providing the campaign soundtrack.

The aim is to highlight the plight of people with the disease, raise donations for patient charities and research funding, forge links between MS organisations, and urge action from politicians.

MS is an auto-immune disease in which nerves are attacked by the body's own defences.

The incurable illness affects around 85,000 people in the UK. It can cause symptoms ranging from mild tingling sensations and loss of balance to full blown paralysis. Up to 60% of sufferers will face long term disability.

Among the planned activities for the campaign is an attempt on Mount Everest by two American women with MS, Lori Schneider and Wendy Booker.

In Ireland, eight people will climb six mountains in 72 hours, while Roll for MS cycling and motorcycling events are being held in Belgium, Canada, France and Luxembourg.

Concerts will take place in Greece and Cyprus, and human chains formed in the Indian cities of Mumbai and Delhi.

The MS Society charity will also open its first office in Palestine.

The US National MS Society is rallying more than 850,000 individuals to press politicians to support affordable health care for sufferers.

U2's Beautiful Day will be featured on a global campaign film highlighting different aspects of MS.

One of the sports celebrities backing the campaign is Argentinian and Barcelona FC football star Lionel Messi.

Peer Baneke, chief executive of the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF) which is organising World MS Day, said: "No matter where they live, people with MS, their families, friends and the wider community, need to come together to help fight this disease and allow people in any country to discuss their MS openly."

Last month, Harry Potter author JK Rowling quit as patron of the MS Society Scotland, claiming the charity is being riven by an internal row. The multi-millionaire, who has supported the charity for nearly a decade, said conflict between the Scottish charity and management in London had resulted in a raft of other resignations.

Bono attacks pious MPs who don’t pay their taxes

Global campaigner Bono has slammed British M.P.s for avoiding paying tax on their expenses. ‘It’s the piousness I can’t stand,’ said the U2 star yesterday, posing for pictures outside the Houses of Parliament. ‘What’s really nauseating is they act like they’re saving the world, when all they’re doing is saving their receipts.’

Bono was particularly angry that while ordinary people have no loop holes to avoid income tax, MPs are able to avoid capital gains, and income tax, through their expense fiddles.

‘What a bunch of hypocrites.’ said the jet-setting green campaigner. ‘It makes me glad my business is registered in Holland.’
