On The Move: A Speech by Bono

A speech Bono made at a White House conference in 2005 will be published as a book in April.

The speech, 'On The Move', calls on Americans to take action against extreme poverty and AIDS in Africa. The book will feature striking photographs, many of which were taken by Bono during his first trip to Ethiopia in 1985.

The book (only available in North America) has been designed by Steve Averill of Four5One Design, U2's long-time design team, and all royalties from its sale will go to the ONE campaign (www.one.org).

Publisher David Moberg heard the speech and approached Bono directly about turning it into a book in a bid to inspire Americans in the fight against AIDS and poverty in Africa.

"I was very motivated after hearing Bono speak and asked myself how we could help," he says. "We're honoured to publish this book and assist in whatever way we can with Bono's efforts on behalf of the ONE campaign."

'On the Move' by Bono is published on April 3rd by Thomas Nelson Publishers

Bono and Wife Promote African Trade

Tuesday 23rd of January 2007 05:27:54 PM

Irish rock star Bono and his wife have started a business project with college students in Ohio. The students who are based at the at Miami University’s Center for Social Entrepreneurship purchase plain cotton T-Shirts that have been made in Africa and resell these on to other companies. Their aim is to help improve the trade and employment issues that are faced by people living in Africa. Bono and his wife Ali Hewson created the company Edun in 2005 to create clothing in countries such as Africa and to help the people in these countries. Edun is based in Dublin in Ireland and they say their purpose is to trade with people not aid them. Bono is famous for his attempts to help people in developing countries.

The team of fifteen students from the Miami University’s Center for Social Entrepreneurship have sold 2,600 T-Shirts since October and have made a profit of one dollar per shirt. The business development manager, Christine Driscoll, for Edun Live which is the sub-brand that consists of the T-shirt line says that plans are in the making to expand a similar model to the Miami version to other campuses and hopes to have 40 by 2011. “We have the blank T-shirts that we screen-print with custom designs†said Andy Mitchelides, president of Edun Live on Campus. The students buy T-Shirts for $4 each and then sell them to to campus organizations and other groups for $10 each. Bono is the lead singer for the group U2 and has joined the ONE campaign to help end poverty and AIDS.

A speech made by U2 frontman Bono will be published in book form in April. Titled On The Move: A Speech By Bono, the book will include a 2005 address he gave at a White House conference on poverty and AIDS in Africa, as well as photos he has taken, including some from 1985, when Bono made his first trip to Ethiopia. During the speech, which was titled "On The Move," Bono urged Americans to help solve the problems facing Africa. On The Move: A Speech By Bono will be out April 3rd, and the current plans are for the book to only be available in North America.

The idea to make a book of the "On The Move" speech came from publisher David Moberg, who said, ""I was very motivated after hearing Bono speak and asked myself how we could help. We're honored to publish this book and assist in whatever way we can with Bono's efforts on behalf of the ONE campaign."

'U2-charist': church to replace hymns with hits

Some Church of England parishioners will replace church hymns with chart-topping hits this spring at an adapted service being dubbed a "U2-charist."

The 'U2-charist' service will discuss reducing world povery, one of U2 frontman Bono's main causes.

St. Swithin's Church, located in the central English town of Lincoln, will host the adapted religious ceremony featuring the music of Irish rockers U2 this May, Rev. Timothy Ellis, Bishop of Grantham, said Monday in announcing plans for the service.

The eucharist ceremony will be traditional, but stripped-down, he said. Instead of the usual hymns, the congregation will sing a few of the band's biggest hits, including Mysterious Ways and Beautiful Day.

The service will also be accompanied by a live band and will include a sophisticated light and a video system, featuring visual images of poverty and drought.

The special mass is being held to shine a light on reducing poverty in the developing world — a cause dear to U2 lead singer Bono — and to offer a fresh, less rigid, updated way for people to worship, Ellis said.

The BBC is planning to record the service for broadcast and Ellis said he hopes the event will be replicated by other parishes across England.

The upcoming mass is not the first of its kind, although it is believed to be the first in the U.K.

Rev. Paige Blair, an Episcopal priest in Maine, is believed to have held the first "U2-charist" in 2005. She's since advised other churches about ways to present the adapted mass in their communities across the U.S. and abroad.

Arctic Monkeys to headline Glastonbury

Bang! Showbiz | Tuesday, 30 January 2007

The Arctic Monkeys are to headline the Glastonbury music festival this year.

The event's organisers have announced the Sheffield rockers, who took the UK by storm last year, are the first confirmed headline act for this summer's musical extravaganza.

Eccentric Icelandic singer Bjork has also been confirmed to perform at the world famous event this summer.

Co-organiser Emily Eavis told the BBC: "We're absolutely thrilled to be able to put Bjork and the Arctic Monkeys on because both are firm favourites in our household.

"The Arctic Monkeys have never done it so this will be their first year and Bjork has done the festival a few times now and is absolutely fantastic."

Michael Eavis, organiser and owner of the Somerset farm where the festival takes place, said most of the line-up has now been finalised, but won't be announced until after April 1 when tickets go on sale.

U2, Coldplay and The Killers are all rumoured to be filling the remaining headlining spots.

After a year's absence, Michael has promised that this year's Glastonbury will be the biggest and best yet.

Extra measures are being taken to stamp out ticket touts and people trying to enter the festival without official tickets.

Fans will have to pre-register to be in with a chance of securing a ticket and provide photo ID.

Video Alert: Bono Interview now on EUX.TV

Bono warned politicians against creating

"a generation of cynics" (Photo: WEF)

BRUSSELS, 29 Jan. (EUX.TV) - The fifth and final report with highlights from the 2007 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, including an interview with U2 rock star Bono, now is ready for viewing on EUX.TV, the Europe channel.

Bono attended the WEF meeting in Davos to pressure Western governments into delivering on their commitment to tackle poverty. Bono has been a regular at the World Economic Forum for the last few years.

Two years ago, the rock star played an influential role in the debate that led the Group of eight industrial countries to promise a plan to cancel debts of poor countries. Germany in June of this year organizes the 2007 G8 summit.

"We are going to find out very soon. In particular this German G8, which is gonna be at Heiligendam," Bono said.

"It's two years on. It's time to take the temperature. There were some serious promises made. Cheques were signed, but as we know, people sign cheques... they like signing them, particularly politicians, but they don't like cashing them. That's what we are going to find out.

"Those cheques weren't big enough in the first place. If those promises are not kept, it's a kind of scandal .... It will make a generation of cynics. I don't believe that is going to happen. I am still optimistic that we will get through this," he said.

Other people commenting in Day 5 of Davos are Thabo Mbeki, South Africa's President; Jonathan Oppenheimer, director of De Beers Diamonds; Stelios Haji-Iaonnou, founder of Easyjet; Michael Chertoff; US senators John McCain and John Kerry; and crown prince Haakon of Norway.

I doubt U2 and Coldplay will take side stage with the Arctic Monkey's headlining. They are like a million times bigger

U2's The Edge Signs Ten Epiphone Music Rising Guitars on Sale for Limited Time at Musician's Friend

Epiphone and Music Rising have announced the sale of ten Epiphone Music Rising guitars signed by U2's The Edge. All proceeds will benefit Music Rising (www.musicrising.org) which has recently launched the second phase of the campaign which grants musical instrument assistance to churches and schools of the Gulf Coast region. On September 25, 2006 U2 and Green Day helped re-open the Louisiana Superdome in a pre-game show where they performed "The Saints Are Coming" to a worldwide audience. The Edge personally put his autograph on ten of the Epiphone Music Rising guitars prior to the show. The ten exclusive guitars will sell for $10,000 each and are available through Musician's Friend (www.musiciansfriend.com/musicrising) until they are gone, with all proceeds benefiting the charity directly. There will be no others offered with the legendary artist's autograph and each have been signed by him on the front portion of the guitar. A photo of him signing the guitar will accompany each guitar as documentation.

Music Rising, a campaign originally launched in November 2005 to replace musical instruments lost or destroyed in the Gulf Region was formed by U2's The Edge, legendary producer Bob Ezrin and Gibson Guitar Chairman and CEO Henry Juszkiewicz. Administered by the Gibson Foundation and partnering with Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation and All Congregations Together, Music Rising has provided instruments and/or gear to over 2,400 professional musicians, 5,500 parishioners and nearly 2,000 students.

Many people from the ravaged region are still living in Federal Emergency Management Agency trailers or are without a permanent residence. Those musicians who have depended on the local music industry for their livelihood have been supported by Music Rising through the replacement of lost instruments and equipment.

The Music Rising Epiphone Les Paul guitar features exclusive artwork and the campaign's slogan "Rebuilding the Gulf Region Note By Note." The artwork which was emblazoned on The Edge's t-shirt at the 2006 Grammy Awards and designed by William Cathcart, has become a symbol of the campaign and is also available on limited edition t-shirts sold exclusively through U2.com and Hard Rock Cafes around the world.

The guitar specs include all the features that have made the legendary Les Paul guitar synonymous with a great rock tone including a solid mahogany body with carved top, glued-in mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard, Alnico Classic Humbucking pickups and stopbar/tunomatic bridge and tailpiece combination. It also includes a custom "Music Rising" gig bag.

‘Live Earth’ to Blast Off July 7

So the cat’s finally out of the bag: ‘Live Earth,’ the much-talked-about music concert that ex-United States Vice President Al Gore is organizing in the name of global warming, is now a full-fledged project to be organized on a massive, multi-cultural scale. “It was the most stellar array of media figures you could ever see but to get all those people in the room on a Friday night shows how willing they are to help,†said an inside source, referring to a top-secret meeting Gore had with the media and his personal advisers in order to being planning for the event.

Expected to headline the event are Kylie Minogue and U2 (of course, this is Bono’s cup of tea), as well as Madonna, Robbie Williams, Coldplay, and Oasis. (Let’s hope the organizers keep Noel Gallagher and Bono far, far away from each other.) The full list of performers that will be participating in Live Earth will be released by the end of the week, official sources say. But some of the organizers are already buzzing with excitement at the invitation extended to The Spice Girls for a reunion performance - although Emma Bunton will probably not be able to make it because of her rapidly expanding pregnancy.

‘Live Earth’ will be held on July 7, 2007, and aired simultaneously from different performances across the globe: England, Japan, USA, South Africa, and Brazil. So tune in to this space - I’m sure we’d be getting a lot of buzz as the days go by.

Bono’S E35m for NERCHA

Monday 12 February 2007, by Dom

See online : The Swazi Observer

By Musa Ndlangamandla

WORLD famous Irish rock star and U2 lead singer Bono has donated more than E35 million (US$5m) to the National Emergency Council on HIV and AIDS (NERCHA) through his philanthrophic initiative (Product) RED.

NERCHA Director Derek von Wissell yesterday told The Swazi Observer that the funds generated through (Product) Red were administered by the Global Fund, adding that Swaziland and Rwanda were chosen by the latter to be the first showcase countries to receive the financial assistance from the Bono-led initiative.

von Wissell explained that Swaziland was chosen as a ‘showcase country,’ by Global Fund, because of its strong track record within the Global Fund’s performance-based model of grant evaluation.

Strong

“This proven strong performance, together with Swaziland’s ambitious goals and proven track record of programmes, led (RED) to select Swaziland as one of its first recipient countries. Good management of resources and a good product also added to the country coming tops to become a ’showcase’ to benefit from the private sector economic initiative that throws the weight of the corporate world behind the fight against HIV and AIDS. We are grateful to all stakeholders who have partnered with us in the fight against HIV and AIDS,†von Wissell said.

The exciting news comes barely three days after revelations by The Swazi Observer that legendary sports club FC Barcelona has donated about E7 million towards causes seeking to protect the rights of orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC), through a historic alliance with UNICEF.

The team is expected in the country before June.

Meanwhile, von Wissell explained that (Product) RED was conceived as a mechanism to harness private sector marketing skills to raise funds and awareness by donating a portion of sales of specially branded products to the Global Fund to fight HIV and AIDS in Africa.

Income

“Income generated by (RED) products will support Global Fund-financed programmes that positively impact the lives of women and children affected by HIV and AIDS in Africa. Swaziland and Rwanda were chosen as the first countries receiving Global Fund grants that will benefit from income generated by (RED). While RED funds are not additional to the grants already approved by the Global Fund Board, (RED) income will replace resources earmarked for these grants in the Global Fund “potâ€, freeing up these resources for other grant renewals or future funding rounds,†he said.

von Wissell added that the initiative brings together leading-edge businesses to create products under the Product (RED) brand and dedicate a percentage of their profits to the Global Fund.

“Giorgio Armani, Gap, Converse, American Express, Motorola, London’s Independent newspaper and Apple Computer are the companies currently committed to the initiative, each signing on for five years. By pledging to donate a percentage of profits from signature wrap-around sunglasses (Armani), red t-shirts (Gap), tekkies (Converse), and special-edition iPods (Apple), to name just a few, the companies are supporting programmes for women and children with HIV in Africa. The brand is the first of its kind and is a ground-breaking step towards long-term involvement by the private sector in supporting the Global Fund,†he said.

In a statement, NERCHA’s Elizabeth Skorochod said in Swaziland, (RED) money is supporting Global Fund-financed programs, which have:

l Reached more than 4,400 mothers with services to prevent mother-to-child-transmission of HIV

l Trained caretakers and doctors in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV

l Equipped hospitals to provide services to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV

l Reached more than 140,000 people with voluntary counseling and testing for prevention of HIV

l Trained more than 70 counselors to teach prevention of HIV

l Set up more than 35 counseling and testing centers for prevention of HIV

l Established feeding schemes in 335 schools

l Built 154 community feeding centers

l Provided education support for more than 36,000 vulnerable children

l Provided anti-retroviral therapy for HIV and AIDS to almost 15,000 patients

l Trained more than 3,000 health workers to deliver home-based care for patients with HIV and AIDS

l All figures sourced from Global Fund PRODUCT (RED) website.

Global Fund work

in SD

IN October 2006, a team from the Global Fund came to Swaziland to visit programmes and projects benefiting from Global Fund moneys.

The two-person team visited child feeding sites and pre-schools, neighbourhood care points, gardens, Kagogo centres, income generating projects and an ART site.

“We were extremely excited to be in Swaziland to see first hand how Global Fund grants have been used to improve the lives of Swazis living with and impacted by HIV and AIDS,†said Adele Sulcas, from The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria during the working tour to the country.

“The work being done is impressive and we are hopeful efforts to combat HIV and AIDS will continue to be scaled up.â€

The Swazi Observer learned that The Global Fund (Product) RED team has plans to continue site visits to the country to follow up on the work happening on the ground.

“The initiative has several celebrities who work around the world as its ambassadors. We expect that they will come to the country soon,†said Derek von Wissell, Director of NERCHA.

Why Swaziland?

Swaziland was chosen as a (RED) recipient country for several reasons. Because of the country’s high prevalence rate, there are a large number of women and children impacted by HIV and AIDS in Swaziland. As such, (RED) funding will be supporting programmes and projects to aid these women and children. This is a focus for (RED).

In addition, Swaziland is considered a ‘showcase country,’ by Global Fund, meaning the Nation has a strong track record within the Global Fund’s performance-based model of grant evaluation. This proven strong performance, together with Swaziland’s ambitious goals and proven track record of programmes, led (RED) to select Swaziland as one of its first recipient countries.

Also, as a showcase country, Swaziland’s programmes will be highlighted to the world as one of the Global Fund’s most successful grant programs. This will bring the world’s awareness to the ways in which the nation is positively impacting the lives of Swazis that have been affected by HIV and AIDS, validating the nation’s response to HIV and AIDS.

“Swaziland is extremely proud to have been selected as a (RED) country and to have been chosen as a success story by the Global Fund,†said Derek von Wissell, director of NERCHA. “It is an exceptional way to highlight the programs our nation has worked hard to implement to fight HIV and AIDS. It also shows the difference money can make in battling this disease.â€

Churches worship to music of U2

CHICAGO, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Christian churches in the United States are increasingly celebrating the Eucharist with the music of Irish rock band U2.

In what is known as a U2charist, traditional hymns are replaced with U2 songs such as "Pride," "Gloria" and "Mysterious Ways" -- partly to get young people excited about coming to services, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The concept was developed in 2005 by an Episcopal priest in Maine, who has since reportedly advised about 300 churches worldwide. The priest, Rev. Paige Blair, said the music is suited for church audiences because of the way the lyrics combine biblical themes with a message to help those in need around the world.

Also, Blair pointed out that because U2's music spans three decades, multiple generations can easily relate to it.

U2's music has had a religious focus from the beginning, but the band is set apart because of its ability to attract fans of all faiths, the newspaper said.

North Dakota House rejects bill to honor U2's Bono

Bono has plenty of fans. But don’t count North Dakota lawmakers among them.

Lawmakers in the House defeated a resolution 58-35 Thursday to honor the U2 frontman for his advocacy of debt relief for Third World countries, saying the Irish rocker had no connection to the state.

Fargo state Rep. Scot Kelsh, who sponsored the measure, said he got the idea for the resolution from a magazine published by the National Conference of State Legislatures, which mentioned that no state at the time had approved a resolution to honor the singer.

“This is something that does matter to us as citizens of North Dakota, the United States, and the world at large,†Kelsh said.

Rep. Gil Herbel, a Republican, said he initially thought the resolution referred to Sonny Bono, the former singer, Republican congressman and husband of Cher.

“When I saw the resolution, I was looking for Cher’s name in there,†Herbel said.
