U2 pay concert tribute to Gately

As U2 continue their '360 Tour', the band paid tribute on stage to Boyzone star Stephen Gately, dedicating one of their songs to the singer.

According to their website, the band dedicated 'Unforgettable Fire' to the memory of Gately at both their Houston and Dallas concerts.

Speaking about the singer, Bono said the 33-year-old was "a beautiful spirit and a bright flame".

Millions of U2 fans around the world will be able to watch the band live in concert this weekend as their California show on Sunday night will be streamed free of charge on the internet.

However Irish viewers will have to stay up very late to catch the sold-out show from the Pasadena Rose Bowl, outside Los Angeles, which is due to be aired on YouTube at 3.30am Irish time on Monday morning.

The concert is the penultimate date of the band's '360 Tour' this year, although more dates will follow in 2010.

U2's Adam does botch job on his house plan

SETBACK: Adam Clayton

By Andrew Phelan

Friday October 23 2009

Houseproud U2 bassist Adam Clayton has had a setback in the latest home improvement plan for his Dublin mansion.

The star will have to go back to the drawing board after paperwork errors led a local authority to declare his application invalid.

Clayton wants to make changes to previously approved permission for alterations to his plush Rathfarnham pad.

His idea is for a 'lozenge-shaped' opening in the first floor landing of the main house. The aim is "to introduce natural light to the ground floor entrance hall below, to include installation of a cast metal balustrade".

Invalid

Declaring the application invalid, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council said Clayton's newspaper notice did not state where it could be inspected by the public. It also wrongly stated that submissions could be made within two weeks, while the deadline is five weeks.

A second reason was failure to comply with regulations on the dimensions of plans and drawings.

The 'lozenge' proposal is the latest in a series of changes to plans for the Georgian pile at Danesmoate Demesne off Kellystown Road.

Bono Wants FIFA To Reinstate Ireland In World Cup

December 1, 2009 9:18 a.m. EST

Anne Lu - Celebrity News Service News Writer

Dublin, Ireland (CNS) - Irish musician Bono has lent his support to his home country's football team. The U2 frontman is appealing to the International Federation of Association Football, or FIFA, to reinstate the Republic of Ireland football team.

The Irish team was knocked out of the World Cup qualifiers by France following French captain Thierry Henry's "Hand of Henry" scandal during the controversial game played on November 18.

Bono told the BBC that Ireland received a "devastating blow," adding it would be a noble thing if FIFA reinstates the country for the World Cup finals in South Africa.

He said, "I think it's okay for FIFA to say 'Look things are changing, that game is an affront to FIFA's concept of fairness' and I think there's smart people in FIFA who will see that this is an opportunity. It's not a huge bureaucracy that can't be turned around."

"It can turn around and they should have video from now on and they should allow Ireland be at the cup."

U2 Tour Should Gross $750 Million

Posted on Tuesday December 8, 2009 at 10:01 AM

The U2 tour will probably gross $750 million by the time it finishes in 2010, according to band manager Paul McGuinness.

He told the Financial Times that the 44 sold-out dates since June, which saw the band play in front of 3.2 million people, grossed about $320 million.

With a similar number of dates planned for 2010, he calculates the full tour should gross about $750 million including merchandise sales, dwarfing the $389 million the act grossed on the Vertigo tour in 2005 and 2006.

He says using the 360º stage has enabled each venue to increase capacity by one-fifth. Partly because of the custom-built, claw-shaped set, the tour costs are about $750,000 a day, “whether we play or not.”

He says the tour should still be “highly profitable” but very often that gross figure is carelessly written about as having gone “straight into Bono’s pocket.”

McGuinness also told the FT about the importance of attention to detail when auditing the band’s payments from record companies and publishers.

“On not one of those occasions did we fail to uncover an underpayment,” he said.

ENO TRIED TO WIPE U2 HIT

Legendary producer BRIAN ENO hated U2's iconic song WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME so much, he tried to erase it in the recording studio.

The track, from the band's 1987 album Joshua Tree, went on to become one of their most famous hits, and was named by Rolling Stone magazine number 28 in their 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of all time.

But U2 owe its release and subsequent success to a young technician who physically fought Eno, who produced the record, to stop him from wiping it from existence.

During an appearance on Elvis Costello's Spectacle TV show, guitarist The Edge reveals, "He had witnessed us try so many ideas it was all grey. So he decided to erase it and start again.

"He sent our junior engineer out of the room so he could erase it. The engineer had to physically grab him and pull him out of the control room."

U2 bassist claims assistant may have stolen money

By Herald staff and wire reports

Monday, December 21, 2009

Adam Clayton, bass player for the rock band U2, was granted an extension to an order stopping his former personal assistant from reducing her assets.

Judge Roderick Murphy ordered Carol Hawkins to give details of her assets and bank accounts and adjourned the case until Jan. 18. Hawkins’ lawyer Lauren Martin declined to comment when contacted by Bloomberg News by phone.

Clayton last week secured a temporary court order preventing Hawkins from reducing her assets below $2.6 million after claiming she may have misappropriated that amount, the Irish Times, a Dublin-based newspaper, reported on Dec. 19.

U2's Adam Clayton suing former assistant over missing funds

The bassist with the Irish stadium rockers claims that his former personal assistant embezzled as much as £1.6m from his accounts over 13 months :o

U2's Adam Clayton is suing his former assistant, Carol Hawkins, alleging that she stole as much at £1.6m from his accounts. On Friday, an Irish judge temporarily froze Hawkins's assets as the court heard claims that she bought holidays and apartments using the bassist's money.

According to Clayton's lawyer, Paul Sreenan, Hawkins approached her employer in September 2008 and admitted that she had "misappropriated" €13,000 (£11,500) from his bank accounts. He dealt with this in "a compassionate manner" and kept her on as his assistant, though he altered certain financial arrangements. A year later, in November 2009, Clayton apparently noticed new discrepancies in his accounts and confronted Hawkins. Hawkins admitted that she had used his credit and debit cards "as needed", according to the Irish Times.

Clayton's accountants concluded that Hawkins embezzled as much as €600 (£533) twice daily for 13 months, totalling €1.8m (£1.6m), spending it on cars, holidays, jewellery, an apartment in New York – and investing in a syndicate that maintains horses. Hawkins has reportedly denied the figure. She has also, believe it or not, been fired.

Dublin high court judge Mary Laffoy ordered a freeze on Hawkins's accounts beginning Friday night. The case was adjourned until today and certain matters have been referred to Irish police, Clayton's counsel said.

In June 2010, U2 will resume the world tour for their latest album, No Line On the Horizon. The concerts should gross about £465m, according to manager Paul McGuinness. Last week, Billboard named the Irish band the second-highest grossing touring act of the noughties.

U2 movie Killing Bono to be filmed in Belfast

Saturday, 26 December 2009

While Northern Ireland was in the grip of the Troubles in the late 1970s, something was happening south of the border which would have a global impact on music.

In 1976, a band was formed in Dublin after a young drummer posted on the school noticeboard looking for other musicians to join him. That band was U2.

Now a new movie is to reminisce about that time — from the unusual perspective of a rival band.

Filming will get under way in Northern Ireland next month on Killing Bono — a story about two Irish brothers chasing a dream of being rock stars.

Heading up the cast will be Brit actor Ben Barnes, star of The Chronicle of Narnia: Prince Caspian and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Barnes will be joined by Robert Sheehan, who starred in the Irish movie Cherrybomb.

Killing Bono is based on Neil McCormick’s autobiography ‘I Was Bono’s Doppelganger’. Barnes play Neil McCormick while Sheehan plays his hapless brother Ivan. Together they set up a band in Dublin in the late 1970s. Sadly for them, however, so do their classmates and rivals — and they go on to become U2.

The movie begins shooting in Belfast on January 11. The script is written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, who worked on The Commitments, while Nick Hamm will direct.

Castlewellan musician Joe Echo — who was recently nominated for a Grammy award for co-writing the Madonna track Celebration — will be providing the soundtrack for the film.

Meanwhile budding actors are being sought out to appear as extras in the movie. They will be expected to take part in three secret gig scenes to be staged in Belfast city centre. For information on how to be an extra, email killingbono@hotmail.com .

BBC admits promotion of U2 album was 'inappropriate'

The BBC has admitted coverage of the launch of U2 album No Line On The Horizon last February, went too far - giving "undue prominence" to the band.

Critics said the BBC had given U2 "the sort of publicity money can't buy".

The corporation's editorial complaints unit (ECU) acknowledged that radio coverage of the event, including a rooftop concert, breached guidelines.

It added the use of the slogan U2 = BBC "gave an inappropriate impression of endorsement".

RadioCentre, the trade body for commercial radio companies, made a formal complaint over the coverage.

Complaints over the free publicity given to the band on BBC TV, radio and online included those of Conservative MP Nigel Evans, who said it was "the sort of publicity money can't buy".

"Why should licence fee-payers shoulder the cost of U2's publicity?"

The ECU admitted that a reference to the BBC being "part of launching this new album", in an interview between Radio 1 presenter Zane Lowe and U2 singer Bono, was inappropriate.

The body also upheld a complaint that it was inappropriate for the Radio 1 website to contain links to the websites of ticket agents for the band's concerts.

'Potentially sensitive'

"The Radio 1 leadership team have reminded executive producers and presenters about the issues to be considered in relation to judgments about undue prominence, and the distinction between the reporting of new artistic work and commercial promotion," it said, earlier this week.

"The management of BBC Marketing, Communication and Audiences (the Division responsible for the U2 = BBC graphic) has reminded all staff of the need to consult the editorial policy team in a timely manner for advice when potentially sensitive issues such as commercial interests are involved."

However, complaints about an edition of Jo Whiley's Radio 1 show, and a BBC News online report of the U2 concert on the roof of Broadcasting House, were not upheld.

A crowd of around 5,000 watched the rooftop show, which capped off a day of promotion for the Irish band's 12th studio album, with U2 appearing as special guests on Radio 1.

The band performed four tracks during the 20-minute gig, which was broadcast live on DJ Chris Evans's BBC Radio 2 show.

No elevation for U2 Tower until 2011

31 January 2010 By Gavin Daly

The planned U2 Tower in the Dublin docklands has been put on hold for another year. The Dublin Docklands Development Authority (DDDA) has written to the backers of the €200 million project, saying it will not go ahead until next year at the earliest.

It is the latest setback for the skyscraper project, which had already been put on hold for a year because of the deterioration of the property market and the economy.

The tower was to be developed by Geranger, a consortium made up of U2,Sean Merlyn’s Ballymore Properties, property developer Paddy McKillen and architect Norman Foster. The consortium was named preferred bidder for the project in October 2007 and the 130metre tower was originally due to be completed next year.

The consortium is understood to still be interested in the development, but the DDDA has delayed following board discussions late last year. It says it will still consider whether to go ahead with the project if conditions improve.

The DDDA has been at the centre of controversy over a number of developments. It is facing large losses from its involvement in the buy-out of the former Irish Glass Bottle Site in Ringsend for €412 million. That site is now valued at €65 million.

Bono’s rosary beads and Larry’s Bible in U2 auction

Friday, 5 March 2010

Fancy owning a piece of U2? Well, fans of Bono and the boys can scoop a number of unique items in an online auction expected to raise £36,000.

Whether it's a pair of used shoes, backstage passes or candid Polaroid shots of the rock legends, fans can get their hands on all things U2.

But the items, auctioned on the New York website gottahave-rockandroll.com, come with a hefty price tag.

Former U2 stylist Lola Cashman has put the 16-item collection up for auction in the US, including Bono's rosary beads and a Bible belonging to Larry Mullen for the combined price of £6,300.

Cashman was previously involved in a high-profile court case dubbed Stetsongate, for selling items belonging to the rock legends she had collected while joining them on their Joshua Tree tour from 1987 onwards. After losing her appeal against a judge's decision that the items were not hers to sell, she is now auctioning off band items that were personally inscribed to her.

All the items up for grabs hail from the band's early days, with the rosary beads expected to make up to £3,500.

No Desire for U2 goodies, as auction nets a measly (EU)7k

Evening Herald, March 11, 2010

By: Caitlin McBride

It was a case of the unforgettable buyer for U2 stylist Lola Cashman, who still hasn't found what she's looking for.

In fact there was literally no desire for a string of U2 trinkets that Ms Cashman had put up for auction -- earning just a quarter of the expected amount.

The unique online auction for some of U2's personal items from the band's early days has raised just (EU)10,000 of the expected (EU)40,000.

The 16-item collection was put up for auction on a US website with just six items bid for in total. All the items up for grabs hail from the band's early days including a number of the boys' personal items such as a pair of Larry Mullen's used Converse shoes and a chipped navy blue mug used by Bono and The Edge.

However, the final figures of the auction show that only six of the sixteen items generated bids, which totalled (EU)7,000 -- a far cry from the (EU)40,000 that was originally predicted.

As the auction was coming to an end yesterday, a flurry of interest erupted for the unique items put up for sale -- including a set of Bono's rosary beads which fetched nearly (EU)4,000.

Along with the beads, a Polaroid picture of Bono from 1987 which sold for more than (EU)1,000 and a used set concert list also sold for (EU)945.

As did a signed photograph of the band for (EU)241 and a backstage pass from their Joshua Tree tour for (EU)219.

Another religious object put up was Larry Mullen's former Bible, given to the stylist in 1988, with the inscription "To Lola, With Real Love, Larry, 15-1-88."

It was being auctioned off for $4,800 (EU3,500) and not one bid was placed.

Larry Mullen's worn Converse shoes were expected to sell for at least $4,500 (EU3,300) which also failed to generate any bids.

The former stylist is no stranger to auctioning off memorabilia belonging to the iconic band.

Cashman was previously involved in a high-profile court case dubbed Stetsongate, for selling items belonging to the rock legends she had collected while joining them on their Joshua Tree tour from 1987 onwards.

After losing her appeal against a judge's decision that the items were not hers to sell, she instead auctioned off items that were personally inscribed to her.

U2 fan's joy after getting job to fix band's Grammy

13/03/2010

A lifelong U2 fan was thrilled when the band called - and asked him to mend a broken Grammy award.

The trophy, for 1987 album The Joshua Tree, was smashed in three pieces with its iconic gramophone broken.

So band managers Googled 'trophy craftsmen' and found Stuart Allcock in Taunton, Somerset. Stuart, who went to his first U2 gig in 1987, felt "dizzy" on the phone. He said "I thought it might be a joke and said: 'Is this Bono?'."

But he was disappointed to find it was made of iron and had to be welded, glued and re-sprayed gold. He said: "I think someone dropped it. It was a bit nerve-wracking, but the result was pleasing."

Asked how much it was worth, he said: "If it wasn't a U2 Grammy, I wouldn't pay a fiver. But it's priceless."

Liam Gallagher rips U2

By WENN.COM

Oasis star Liam Gallagher has taken aim at rockers U2 - insisting he has never met a true fan of the band.

The singer's brother Noel has previously slammed the musicians for turning their gigs into a guilt trip for fans by using the shows to talk about politics.

Now his sibling has blasted the Beautiful Day hitmakers, because he's convinced the group must pay people to come to their concerts to "make them look good".

He says, "I have never seen a U2 fan. I have never seen anyone with a U2 shirt or been around someone's house that has a f---ing U2 record. Where do their fans f---ing come from? Where are they?

"I reckon they buy them. With all the money they've made, they just bought a load of people and every time they do a gig they get a shovel and pile them into their gigs to make them look good."
