U2's Bono turns down Winfrey's TV show offer

Chat show queen Oprah Winfrey has revealed that she offered U2 rocker Bono his very own TV show, but he declined.

She invited Bono to join the ranks of celebrity presenters on her new network, as she was sure his philanthropy work would make for good TV.

Winfrey has recruited several stars for her own next year - including Jenny McCarthy, Rosie O'Donnell and Ryan and Tatum O'Neal, as well as Hollywood actors including Julia Roberts, Forest Whitaker and Goldie Hawn to develop their own documentaries for the network.

"(I asked Bono), 'Would you like a TV show?' I look at everything now through the prism of, 'This could make a very good TV show!'" the Daily Express quoted her as telling New York Times.

Old rockers don't die - they get rich

Thursday, December 30, 2010

Bon Jovi may have recently been snubbed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but the veteran US band still end the year as the world's top concert attraction, trade magazine Pollstar said.

The group sold US$201.1 million (HK$1.57 billion) worth of tickets, split almost evenly between North America and the rest of the world.

That is a noteworthy success because the band were promoting a 2009 album that did not sell strongly.

Bon Jovi also shone even as overall sales slid in a tough economy.

Pollstar said sales for the top 50 tours worldwide fell 12 percent to US$2.93 billion. In North America, the drop was 15 percent to US$1.69 billion.

Overseas tours are becoming more lucrative for musicians, especially as infrastructure improves across Asia and the former Soviet bloc, Pollstar said.

Indeed, hard rockers AC/DC come in at No2 and Irish foursome U2 at No3 after making all their money overseas.

AC/DC grossed US$177 million, and U2 US$160.9 million :o . U2 were the top worldwide act in 2009 with US$311 million, <_< followed by AC/DC.

In a field dominated by rock acts, flamboyant pop star Lady Gaga is No 4 this year with US$133.6 million.

The Poker Face singer worked the hardest among the top 10, playing 138 shows, two-thirds of them overseas.

Bon Jovi, by contrast, played 80 shows. AC/DC with 40 and U2 with 32 took it relatively easy.

Metallica are No5 with US$110.1 million from 60 overseas shows.

Both Metallica and AC/DC last released albums in 2008, relying on their extensive catalogs of headbanging favorites to keep drawing fans.

Canadian singer Michael Buble comes in at No6, followed by the Walking with Dinosaurs live family show.

Paul McCartney makes eighth place, before the Eagles at No9.

Former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters rounds out the top 10 with US$89.5 million.

Waters earned all his money in North America, where his acclaimed restaging of Pink Floyd's The Wall is the No 2 draw behind Bon Jovi.

Among all-time North American tours, the Bon Jovi trek ranks at No9.

The Rolling Stones hold the record with US$162 million from their 2005 outing.

The Dave Matthews Band are No3 in North America with US$72.9 million, followed by Buble and the Eagles.

Bon Jovi's previous best in North America was No5 in 2008.

The New Jersey rockers, led by singer Jon Bon Jovi, were on the ballot for inclusion in the 2011 class of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, but failed to make the cut.

Critics largely pan the band's catchy "soft-rock" tunes, even though they have little trouble selling out stadiums to a female-skewing fan base.

Their 2009 album The Circle made its US debut at No1, but then lost steam

Bono’s Investment in Facebook Pays

Irish U2 rock band frontman Bono owns 1.5 percent of Facebook, Inc., which is worth an estimated $750 million, or four times the valuation of his original investment in the world’s largest social networking platform.

Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.’s latest investment in the website updates its valuation to be $50 billion. Elevation Partners, a private equity firm founded by Bono, also stands to profit from the upward valuation.

According to the BBC, Elevation has not made a public statement about its Facebook shares, managing partner Mark Bodnick told the New York Times. The Goldman Sachs deal is all about strategic growth out of the limelight and away from the “short-termism” of the market.

A Goldman Sachs 101 page report to potential clients states that Facebook made $1.2 billion in revenue in the first nine months of 2010. Although details about the origins of the revenue figure have not been revealed, said an unnamed source to Reuters, due to a legally binding nondisclosure agreement.

The popular social media site, which began in Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg’s Harvard University dorm room, has taken social networking to new heights.

Currently, there are about 500 million Facebook users, and around 4 billion messages are exchanged per day through the company’s interface, according to Facebook

TUNES ; This week's essential download tracks: PICK OF THE WEEK

MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE Sing Wow. Another stroke of musical genius from the reinvented band who showed there 's life after emo. A massively uplifting monster Green Day would be proud of.

FE-NIX Red Light These girls are billed as the UK version of the Pussycat Dolls - and they certainly look the part. The music's decent too, and this first single should bring them a debut hit.

JODIE CONNOR FT. WILEY Now Or Never Rising urban star Jodie is tipped for stardom and, having Wiley on board for rap duties on this first single, won't do her hopes any harm at all.

BRUNO MARS Grenades This single should be massive. There's a love theme throughout and his vocals are pleading but with a darker edge that his more carefree hit Just The Way You Are. His debut album is due in a few weeks.

FRAN HEALY Sing Me To Sleep A lovely solo track from the Travis frontman. He's enlisted the vocals of Neko Case and it's a dreamy, swirling melody which is gloriously laid back and mellow. The vocals and arrangements work perfectly.

VAL VERDE Glass Girl In A Cage Great track from this indie rock band from Dunfermline. It's infectious anthemic, with a pounding stadium feel of U2 and Snow Patrol mixed with a vocal delivery that feels like the Kings Of Leon. DIDDY DIRTY MONEY Coming Home The long-awaited single from the new band propelling hip hop legend Diddy back to his deserved position right at the top of the charts. Superb stuff.

UK music labels expected to make tracks available as soon as they hit radio

Confirmation is expected to emerge on Monday 17th January 2011 that certain high profile UK labels will soon begin making tracks available for sale as soon as they are released to radio.

This is something that artists have been asking for for some time as many believe the current practice of releasing to radio before retail damages sales, encourages music fans to illegally download tracks and distorts the music charts.

The Featured Artists Coalition ' a group with over 1,500 artists and supporters who collectively campaign for the protection of UK performers' and musicians' rights ' has been pushing for the change. Members include Robbie Williams, Annie Lennox, Radiohead, Kate Nash, Billy Bragg, Fran Healy, Tom Jones, Dave Rowntree from Blur and Sandie Shaw.

The FAC is issuing the statement below.

"We welcome the move by several of the major and independent labels to move to same day retail and airplay single releases. This is a change we have been pushing for for several months. We believe artists will benefit from increased sales, fewer illegal downloads from fans who want to own the music as soon as they hear it, and a more accurate chart which reflects undistorted consumer behaviour."

Thanks to TRWS

This makes sense I think. Tracks are played on radio for weeks and weeks before the release date. By the time the release date officially arrives you've either already got a download copy from some internet friend of a friend of a friend or you've become totally sick of the track

:cheer:

U2 fork out for youth music scheme

(UKPA) – 3 hours ago

U2 have stumped up 5 million euro to ensure 10,000 Irish youngsters learn music.

The rock band donated the money to bring a pilot scheme nationwide and search for hidden talent.

Guitarist The Edge said it was exciting that the group's millions would give so many children an opportunity in music.

U2 pay £5 million to help Irish youngsters learn music B)

The legendary band help out project to find new talent.

Bono and U2 have had their name tagged to any number of causes over the years, mostly war orientated in one way or another.

It makes a refreshing change then to find the band’s latest charitable offering concerning something a little closer to home and less political – helping Irish youngsters learn music.

The rock legends have forked out around £5 million to make sure that 10,000 Irish children have the opportunity to learn music in a pilot scheme aimed at hunting out hidden music talent.

Guitarist The Edge said that he was excited to think that the band’s money could help give children the opportunity they otherwise would not get.

The project had previously been stuck in limbo with no financial backing so it has been a much needed boost to the organisers who otherwise would have not seen their ambitious plans get underway.

Ampersand .U2 to wrap up tour in Moncton, Arcade Fire will open

Bono will touch down in Moncton on July 30

How’s this for a double-bill of epic stadium-rock proportions: Uber-pop band U2 will be performing at Moncton’s Magnetic Hill, along with one-time indie darlings Arcade Fire this summer.

Canada’s Arcade Fire (who at least one member of National Post staff can recall seeing in a bar in Hamilton) will open for U2 when the Irish band plays its final North American date on July 20.

Fans of Bono (and Arcade Fire devotees willing to see Win Butler et al as an opening act) are advised to start planning where to stay now since, according to CTV, “hotels in Moncton began selling out last week when rumours of the concert began circulating.”

General admission tickets were listed at $65 and VIP tickets for $200 to $275.

The show, billed as “one of the biggest spectacles ever presented in the history of Atlantic Canada,” is in support of U2′s 2009 album No Line On The Horizon.
