Bono sets the record straight

17-Feb-2011 | Andile Ndlovu | 24 comments

IRISH band U2's lead singer, Bono, has called suggestions that he supports the Kill the Boer struggle song "barking mad".

The singer told Talk Radio 702 presenter Redi Tlhabi yesterday that struggle songs couldn't be ignored, but that they should be sung appropriately.

Bono said: "You can't pretend they (struggle songs) don't exist, but it is widely irresponsible to use these songs to stir up more hate."

Local Afrikaans musician Steve Hofmeyr took offence at reports on Sunday that Bono supported ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema's singing of the struggle song, and dumped his tickets, worth R5000, into the Jukskei River on the eve of U2's concert in Johannesburg.

Hofmeyr subsequently "translated" U2's lyrics of their Sunday Bloody Sunday song, and added lines like: "Kill the boer, before Sunday, Kill the boer, before Sunday".

Meanwhile, Bono revealed that he had written a song called Breathe about former president Nelson Mandela, which he said was written a while ago but he only remembered it this week.

U2 will perform another sold-out concert at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday evening. Malian duo Amadou and Miriam and Arno Carstens' Springbok Nude Girls will open the show.

U2 FOR GLASTO :cheer: we will see them on telly !!! :cheer:

U2 have confirmed they will headline this year's Glasto on the Friday night.

They were booked to top the Pyramid Stage bill in 2010 but cancelled when BONO put his back out.

Instead, guitarist EDGE went along on his own to perform with MUSE - and decided then that Irish supergroup U2 would reschedule.

Glastonbury won Best Festival at the NME Awards last night and Edge said by video message: "As you know, I was at Glastonbury last summer - mainly to do a bit of a recce.

"I got a chance to wander around and eat a veggie burger and fries. On the Saturday I got up there with Muse and had a fantastic time. This year U2 are all looking forward to coming back. We'll be playing June 24 and we'll see you there."

With COLDPLAY and BEYONCE confirmed as the other headliners, the event is shaping up nicely

15 March 2011 19

Sir Paul Mccartney, U2 and Shakira are among acts who are in the frame to perform at a special concert on a bridge linking the U.S. to Mexico.

Business leaders in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez are planning a spectacular party to boost the region's international profile, and they are trying to attract some of the biggest names in music to sign up.

Organisers want to stage the all-star gig in October (11) and are considering erecting a stage on one of the huge bridges connecting Mexico with the Texan city of El Paso, which sits just inside the U.S. border.

A spokesman for MCCartney tells the El Paso Times, "It's totally possible, but I don't have a confirmation either way."

Arcade Fire, U2, The Killers' Label To Stop The Release Of Physical Singles

Mercury to rely on downloads...

March 25, 2011 by Holly Frith

Arcade Fire, U2 and The Killers' record label Mercury have announced that they will be stopping the release of singles on CD and vinyl.

Mercury like many other labels have lost money on singles in 2010 and have now said that they will only release them on ''rare occasions''.

Physical singles now only provide less than 1% of total weekly single sales, with digital downloads becoming the main source for music lovers.

U2 Album Voted Best Of The 80s

U2's 1987 classic has narrowly beaten Guns N Roses' Appetite For Destruction to the top of a new Readers Poll in Rolling Stone Magazine.

The album also beat the likes of Born In The USA by Bruce Springsteen and AC/DC's Back In Black in the poll.

Rolling Stone says that it was "a close race" ultimate won by Bono and co. They also admit that the Clash's London Calling made the grade by "the skin of its teeth" because even though it was released in the UK in December 1979, it appeared in the US the following month.

Here's the top ten:

01. U2: The Joshua Tree

02. Guns n'Roses: Appetite for Destruction

03. Michael Jackson: Thriller

04. Bruce Springsteen: Born in the USA

05. Prince: Purple Rain

06. AC/DC: Back in Black

07. The Smiths: The Queen is Dead

08. The Clash: London Calling

09. The Cure: Disintegration

10. Metallica: Master of Puppets

Katie Price 'Upsets' U2's Bono And The Edge In Argentinian Restaurant

She ruins their meal...

April 07, 2011 by Jason Gregory

Glamour model  Katie Price upset U2's Bono and The Edge when they dined in the same restaurant in Buenos Aires earlier this week, according to reports.

Price, also known as Jordan, enjoyed a meal with new boyfriend Leandro Penna on a table next to the Irish band.

A source told The Sun that Bono and The Edge “kept their distance” from Price but were left upset by “noisy” photographers who had followed her to the restaurant.

U2 are currently in South America on the latest leg of their 360 Degree world tour.

As previously reported on Gigwise, the band's next studio album will be “futuristic”, according to one of its producers, RedOne.

Pushed to The Edge: U2 guitarist's plans to build FIVE Malibu mountain homes infuriates locals

U2 guitarist The Edge has incurred the wrath of his wealthy would-be neighbour over plans to build five new homes.

The 49-year-old musician has submitted plans to erect the five properties in the sun-drenched pastures of Malibu in Los Angeles.

The Edge, real name David Evans, wants to develop a 156-acre site in the Santa Monica Mountains with environmentally friendly houses that will be powered by solar panels and be fitted with water collection and treatment facilities.

However, locals are hardly rock and rolling over the idea.

U2 drummer wows Eno with millisecond timing

Saturday 30 April 2011

U2 drummer Larry Mullen has sharper timing than a computer according to legendary producer Brian Eno.

Eno made the discovery while recording with the band after Mullen rejected his use of a click track to keep the beat.

"I was working with Larry Mullen, Jr on one of the U2 albums," Eno tells the New Yorker magazine. "'All That You Don't Leave Behind', or whatever it's called."

"I said, 'No, that can't be so, Larry'," Eno recalls. "'We've all worked to that track, so it must be right'. But he said, 'Sorry, I just can't play to it'."

Mullen thought that the click track was slightly off and insisted it was a fraction of a beat behind the rest of the band. "I said, No, that can't be so, Larry," Eno recalls. "We've all worked to that track, so it must be right." But he said, "Sorry, I just can't play to it."

Eno eventually adjusted the click to Mullen's satisfaction, but he was just humouring him.

It was only after the drummer had left, that Eno checked the original track again and realised that Mullen was right: the click was off by six milliseconds.

"The thing is," Eno says, "when we were adjusting it I once had it two milliseconds to the wrong side of the beat, and he said, 'No, you've got to come back a bit'. Which I think is absolutely staggering."

U2's The Edge in US mansions deal

Friday, 29 April 2011

U2 star The Edge has been bidding to create five homes on a ridge overlooking Malibu since 2006

U2 star The Edge is a step closer in his long-running battle to build a group of mansion homes in a California beauty spot.

He has been bidding to create five homes on a ridge overlooking Malibu since 2006 but there had been concerns over the environmental impact.

However officials at the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy board have now agreed that they will not oppose the plan after being given assurances to allay their concerns and open up the area for greater public access.

The musician and his partners will pay £452,000 to help pay for work on public trails and up to £150,000 for consulting services.

However the project must still get final approval, and there are still some concerns from neighbouring residents.

Don Schmitz, who represents the owners of the Sweetwater Mesa estate, said they had carefully considered concerns about the impact

He added: "The programme that the property owners and the conservancy developed in collaboration will ensure significantly greater public access to natural areas through the linking and development of new coastal hiking trails."
